Zamzar
Web Application - no installation required
Windows 98 through Windows Vista
No download required; however your connection speed is relevant as you will need to upload and download any files you convert

This interesting web application was suggested to us by Premium subscriber, Irene. Apparently, Irene amuses herself by converting files from one format to the other using Zamzar. Get a life Irene! No, no, I'm just kidding, Irene. Honest Injun (is that politically correct?) Irene, this is a really great idea and something that we can use, and we think many of our reader will use too. Why, as a matter of fact, I had some doofus send me a an Apple iTunes music file the other day and I couldn't play it. Why? Because i don't and won't install Apple software on a Windows computer. You know 'apples to apples, 'oranges to oranges' and 'dust to dust' -something like that. Nothing runs worse on Windows computer than Norton and Apple software. I'm wondering if Norton is really owned by Apple? Wouldn't that be something? If Apple created Windows viruses, worms and Trojans, and owning Norton they could sell you something to get rid of them? I'm about to get sued here, I can feel it. EB will disavow that I am even part of this company and I'll be begging on the street corners of my little town.

Anyway, to make a short story a meandering one, I couldn't play the iTunes music file (which is, if you must know, an .M4A extension - which I know sounds too much like a ballistic missile). I refused to install the Apple iTunes software on my pristine Windows Vista computer, because once Apple software gets into my computer, it will constantly beg me to "update", "install QuickTime", and all manner of other buggy Apple stuff so as to make my computer run like a three-legged turtle in quicksand which would then convince me that my best option would be to dump Windows and run out and plop down about $2000.00 for a spankin' new Apple Mac with a Leopard in it. No thanks. Apple software might be fine on Apple computers because they want Apple computers to run well so they can continue to develop a gushing cadre of loyal Apple-heads that enjoy telling Windows users how stupid they are. I already know how stupid I am, I don't need some Apple user extolling the virtues of Apple computers and demonizing Bill Gates and Microsoft. Not that Bill and Microsoft don't need a good sitting-down-with. I don't really think they have a clue anymore. But we'll get into that some other time. By now you're really angry because you're reading this to learn what the heck the freeware of the week is, and all you're getting is a tirade about Apple. But, I was having so much fun!

Anyway....moving right along, (and I would have said "I digress" but I guess I can't even digress correctly according to an old friend of mine - and I do mean 'old') I'll let Zamzar's developers explain what Zamzar is and what it does - and they'll even tell you what Zamzar means - and very concisely too! Read on with hope, dear friend:

"Zamzar is dedicated to helping you transform your songs, videos, images and documents into different formats. Our mission is:

"To provide high quality file conversion for as many file formats as possible"

We are intent on bringing order to your file system by offering you a one stop solution for all your file conversion needs. Like others we were fed up with having files in all sorts of formats, and no easy way of converting between them - the quest to find a better way led to the birth of Zamzar...."

The name "Zamzar" is based on a character from the Bohemian author Franz Kafka's book "The Metamorphosis". In the novel Kafka describes the extraordinary story of a young man who is transformed whilst sleeping into a gigantic insect.

The man's name - Gregor Samsa - was used as the basis for our company name because of its' powerful association with change and transformation..."

And so my friends, if you need to convert files from one type to another, whether they be image files, video files, music files (even Apple iTunes), document files, HTML, RSS, or others, you'd be wise to give this site and web application a try before installing some bloated software program just so you can play the famous "We Ain't Had Any Rain In Georgia Since Lewis Carroll Was Alive" video or an Apple iTunes rendition of "Grandma Killed A Reindeer and Made Me Tasty Stew" by Burt and Lena on your computer. Please, please, please! Save yourself the misery and give Zamzar a try first. You'll be glad you did. After all Zamzar is this week's Freeware of the week!

NOTE: The site is supported by advertising and lots of it. Make sure your popup-blocker and your brain is fully engaged before visiting this site. Lots of ads, but the functionality of this web site's conversion tools is worth the aggravation. Really! Honest Injun!
