Our Freeware Pick Of The Week - April 5, 2008

TemporaryInBox.com
A Firefox and Internet Explorer Extension (toolbar)
Also available as a free Web service

We live in the age of disposable things. We have disposable incomes, disposable diapers and disposable spouses (I'm kidding! Don't get your Hanes up in a wad, hubbies and wives).

Say you want to download a software program from Dirty Danny's Dandy Software Site and they want an email address so they can send you the link to download the file...but you're not too keen on Dirty Danny because you've never heard of this site before (you shouldn't be downloading anything from him anyway - but this is for illustration purposes you understand?) and you don't want Dirty Danny sending you anything other than the download link. What can you do?

Did you ever click a link to read a news article on the Web and you get to the Des Moines Fishwrapper-Journal and they say you have to join to read the rest of story about the octopus with only five tentacles - but two heads - that devoured all the palms trees on Sanibel Island and left a big, slimy mess on the beaches? You know you're never going to visit the Fishwrapper again and you sure don't want to be inundated with emails from the Fishwrapper staff about all the neat goings-on in downtown Des Moines especially since you live in Nice, France and don't like Americans in general and Iowans in particular. So, what can you do?

You get yourself a handy, dandy, disposable email address that disappears in six hours, that's what you do. Before we let the Web site's owner describe all the lovely features, we caution you that this is only for things you don't want to keep - that's why they call it disposable. If you wanted to join our community "NotOverTheHill.com" you wouldn't use a disposable address. And you sure wouldn't use one for subscribing to a newsletter you pay for - like this one. And for that matter you wouldn't use it to subscribe to any newsletter you really wanted to get. Just so you understand that the purpose of TemporaryInBox.com isn't for things you want, it's for things you don't want or for things you only want one time.

If this sounds interesting to you read on - if not read on. The Web site owner is now approaching the podium - and here he is, live and in person - Mr. Pascal Beyeler:

"...What is TemporaryInbox.com?

Temporaryinbox.com is a free disposable email address service.
What do you mean by "disposable email address?"

Those email addresses are short-time-use-email-addresses, which can be used once or twice; then you don't have to care about them anymore. Your temporary address is deleted after six hours.
Why would I ever want disposable email?

You want to participate in a lottery, or register in a forum or a news site that requires you to give an email address. These services provide something that you want, but you may not trust their privacy policies; and you're sick of going through the process of creating a new email address at your preferred free provider, getting invites, and all that. Perhaps you want to sign up for a one-shot account on a board so you can post a potentially inflammatory, unpopular, or whistle-blower message without being linked to your "real" identity. It's time for a temporary and disposable email address!

The situation: You want to signup at a website/forum/blog/etc. You are at the registration form, and an email address is required. You're not too keen on the idea. So, you choose to use temporaryinbox.com, and you've already installed the Firefox extension. An IE extension is also available.

( You don't even have to download anything, by the way. Full functionality is available on the site at www.temporaryinbox.com - the toolbar sure does make things easier for regular users, though. )

1. Click the "random email" button on the temporaryinbox firefox extension toolbar. This generates your random, temporary email address.
2. Copy it from the toolbar to the email address field in the registration form you're filling out; then finish and submit.
3. Now click the "check" button on the toolbar, and you'll be taken directly to your temporary inbox. Open the email and click the activation link or copy the password... or whatever.
4. That's it! You've just successfully taken a step towards stopping spam in your inbox and protecting your right to privacy and anonymity!

Once you're done you can delete the mail, or let it be. Remember, that the inbox will be deleted after six hours, regardless.

PLEASE BEAR IN MIND that your temporary inbox is NOT PASSWORD PROTECTED! Anybody who knows the account name can check for messages.

Delete sensitive information by hand immediately!
Why did you create this service for free?

Because I hate spam! But first I saw some other sites, which offered this service. I loved them immediately and wanted to create my own.
Why is this service better than others?

* No registration or fees
* You stay anonymous
* You keep spam out of your personal inbox
* Because it's very fast!
* It's multi-lingual (at the moment available in English, German, Italian, French and Spanish)
* HTML mails are displayed (occasionally some may be deformed, but most are generally legible)
* The design is low-impact - small, clear, and cute
* It's just the best disposable email address service on the net!

We thought this was a clever idea -and it works great. Hmmm guess why that's why we named it this week's Freeware Pick Of The Week. Just be careful you don't subscribe to things you really want with a disposable email address - or you won't get it - get it?
