Most of us need a good desktop search tool sometimes. Windows doesn't provide a good search tool - at least not the one that comes with Windows. And there really isn't a lot of good search tools available. Sure there's Google Desktop Search, but we've never really been impressed with it. It hasn't lived up to its Web cousin - the best Web search in the business. Then there's Windows Desktop Search, which has its pros and cons. And, there are many commercial desktop search tools, but this is a freeware pick and most of you are reading this because you don't want to spend any money.

Luckily for those of you who don't want to spend money but want a desktop search tool as good as, or better than, those commercial desktop search tools costing $50, $60, or even $70, we've stumbled across one for you. It's better than most commercial desktop search tools and the price is right up your alley - like, for instance, free.

It's called DK Finder and here's what it is:  DK Finder is a fast desktop search that can really help you find what you're looking for faster than the slow, bloated Windows search feature included with Windows XP and prior versions of Windows. Windows Vista search feature is faster, but not as fast or as fast as DK Finder - and does not always give you the results you need.

DK Finder indexes drives and folders and returns instant results for keyword searches. When we say "instant" we mean "instant". It takes less than a second to return dozens or even hundreds of results from your search queries. If it's on you computer, DK Finder will find it. DK Finder lets you search by file name, extension, or even keywords contained within files. DK Finder uses a smart indexing algorithm you can configure so that it scans only files that have been modified recently. If you want, for example, to find something on you computer that you know you've saved within the last 14 days - you can configure DK Finder to scan only items newer than 15 days...this saves time since it doesn't have to waste time searching through files from months and years ago. Or if you want something that you might have saved years ago, DK Finder can find that too and faster than anything else we've tried. 

One of the programs we tested DK FINDER on has over a half a billion files. Yes, we're crazy, but we're fun. Anywhale, it took less than five minutes for DK Finder to index them all. Really. Just think how fast it could index a normal person's computer! And, you'll notice you can set the power level -lower or higher - in case you want to index your files while you're doing other things. The lower you set the power the less resources it uses and the less it will affect other things you're doing on your computer. Lower power settings result in slightly slower indexing. We tested it on full power and worked on other things while DK FINDER indexed the test computer and it had no affect on other programs running. Your computer might be different.

And you have to love a programmer with a sense of humor too. We loved his "About" dialog:
