Why you shouldn't use Internet Explorer to store login data (passwords/usernames)
We want to remind everyone who uses Internet Explorer to save form data for login sites means anyone using your computer can login to any of those sites just as easily as you can. If someone else is using your computer you might want to reconsider, especially if the sites you log into contain any personal or confidential information. If you're allowing Internet Explorer to save passwords and fill forms for you on your Laptop - you should be aware that if your laptop is ever stolen whoever has possession of it will be able to access any of those password protected sites as well. It's never a good idea to allow IE to save passwords and usernames for login sites. RoboForm offers a free version which stores up to ten logins. If you have more than 10 logins you can store the ten most important in Roboform at least. RoboForm keeps your passwords and usernames encrypted. You can set up RoboForm so a password must be entered before the login form will be auto-filled. This is a great safeguard and something that everyone who is using RoboForm should be doing. Instead of remembering dozens of passwords, you just have to remember one master password - RoboForm will remember the rest and auto-fill all login forms after you enter the master password. Internet Explorer does not offer that important safeguard, but Firefox does.

The following instructions for Internet Explorer 7 and 8 - the example image is from IE8 but IE7 is quite similar. To prevent Internet Explorer from offering to auto-fill forms in the future do this:

1. Open Internet Explorer, and click "Tools" then "Internet Options".
2. Click the "Content" tab at the top
3. Click "Settings" in the Auto Complete section
4. Uncheck all User names and passwords on forms
5. Close the dialog

Firefox has a better idea. You can set a master password so that no one else can login to your password protected sites unless you give them your master password. This makes us wonder why Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft's self-acclaimed "best and fastest" browser, doesn't even have such a simple little feature that allows you to prevent your password protected sites from be accessed by anyone using your computer.

If you use Firefox, just click "Tools" "Options" on the toolbar, then click the "Security" icon. If you want Firefox to remember passwords/usernames for your login sites, check these two boxes:

1. Remember passwords for sites

2. Use a master password

To set a master password click the Master Password button. Enter a hard-to-guess password but one you'll remember and save it.

If you wish to continue using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, do yourself a big favor, don't allow it to store sensitive information like passwords and usernames for password protected sites unless you're absolutely sure that no one else is going to be using your computer. It's not a matter of trust. Most of us like to keep our financial data private, even if we have nothing to hide. Again, Firefox is light years ahead of Internet Explorer.
