The Cookie Monster strikes again
Windows all versions

Make your computer run like new again! Scan your computer with Reimage right now!

If you have not heard of the term "Flash Cookies" yet, you will soon. It seems there's a new hysteria over cookies thundering across the Web - this time all the umbrage is over something someone has dubbed "Flash Cookies".

We're not going to get back into why you don't need to worry about cookies, but if you're interested in knowing more about cookies, you can read one of our articles about cookies here

Anyway a faux security newsletter we subscribe to (and don't ask us why), seemed to think "Flash Cookies" were so dangerous they needed to take up half of their newsletter with it (the other half consisted of ads for their own security software applications).

For proof that Flash Cookies are dangerous, they linked to an article which used an example of someone reading an article on a newspaper site about Congress voting on a bill to raise taxes. According to this article, there would be no relevant ads that would show up on that page, since its content was about taxes. So the newspaper's Web site would drop Flash Cookies on your computer. That way, if you had clicked on an advertisement for dog food on one of that site's other pages, you'd see dog ads appear on the page that contained the article about taxes. How dare they!

If a site drops a Flash Cookie or any other cookie while you're on that site, and that cookie determines you've clicked on an ad for dog food, and therefore see dog food and pet-related ads on that site's other pages, is this really violating your security or your privacy? Is it really?

Cookies only track you while you're browsing the site the placed them on your computer, cookies - Flash or otherwise - don't follow you across the Web to every other site you visit. In other words, you're not going to see dog food or pet-related ads on other sites you visit.

Cookies have many good uses too:  for instance saving your preferences those sites where you select your local weather, color preferences, text sizes, etc. Yes, cookies can be used to track the ads you click and to show you ads based upon the ads you've clicked. But cookies dropped by a site are only valid for that site, whether they are ordinary cookies or Flash Cookies.

While you may not agree that a site should be doing this, they've been doing it for years. Flash Cookies are not new, they've been around for years - and regular cookies have been around for since the Web was born.

The real problem with cookie hysteria is that it distracts you from the real threats that exist on the Web: the phishing sites; the malicious downloads; the Trojan-laced downloads; spyware and adware, and all of the other chicanery taking place, every day, on the Web.

We'll guarantee you that no one has ever had their bank account drained, their credit card information stolen, they identity stolen, their computer infected, or their computer ruined by a cookie - Flash or otherwise.

Folks, there are so many real dangers on the Web, don't allow yourself to be distracted by the scare mongers who play upon your fears. Demonizing cookies is just plain ridiculous. Demonization of cookies is much more dangerous than any cookie could ever be. Don't fall prey to the doomsayers who demonize cookies - if you do, you'll take your eyes off he real dangers that abound on today's Internet.
