USB HUBS Make your computer run like new again! Visit Reimage right now! Sandra wants to know about USB hubs USB hubs are a great way to add more USB ports to a computer. If you have a lot USB devices - printers, scanners, monitors, external hard drives, flash drives, etc. - you might find you simply don't have enough USB ports to accommodate all the USB devices and accessories you have. Think of a USB hub as an extension cord for your USB ports. You can turn one port into four ports. If you need more than four extra ports, buy an additional 4-port hub. The main two types of USB hubs are: unpowered and powered. An unpowered hub, (bus-powered), is one that draws power from the computer. A powered hub, (also called a self-powered hub) draws its power from an external power supply - in other words you plug it into a power strip, surge protector or wall socket. We recommend you buy powered USB ports simply because you can use them with everything. Some devices that require a lot of power to run, like some scanners, some kinds of external hard drives, or devices that draw power from a USB port to recharge don't work well with unpowered (bus-powered) hubs - and some don't work at all. While unpowered hubs are cheaper, they can't be used with all types of USB devices whereas powered USB hubs can. We hope this helps! Thanks again, Sandra.
