Windows Vista Tips & Tricks

Add the "RUN" Command To Your Vista Start Menu

Windows Vista, by default, does not include the Run command on the Start Menu. This, of course, was one of our favorite features, as we often said in our XP tips and tricks to click "Start" the "Run" (remember") and type in "Notepad" for example.  It was just an easier way of getting to programs like Notepad and others without navigating the Start Menu. We think "Run" belongs on your Vista Start menu too. Down the road it will make it easier for we, who are lazy, to give you tips and tricks for Vista. So, let's get "Run" back on your Vista Start Menu. It's easy!

To add the Run command back to the Vista Start Menu:

1. Right click the Taskbar in an empty area (where no icons or text lives)
2. Click on Properties
3. Click the "Customize" button and select "Customize Start Menu"
4. Scroll down in the dialog windows until you find the "Run" command checkbox and check it (Duh!)
5. Click OK

The "Run" command is back on your Start Menu, just like it was in Windows XP.

Windows Vista - Sidebar Shortcuts

You either love the sidebar in Vista, or you hate it. We don't think there's any middle ground -except for us, who haven't made up our minds yet. It could be that we've reached the point where we don't have any minds to make up. I'm sure that's the impression some of you are getting...ah hem! However, for those of you who use the sidebar and like it (ugly clocks and all) here are three keyboard shortcuts you can use to make working with the sidebar easier:

- Windows logo key +SPACEBAR - Brings all gadgets to the front and select Sidebar

- Windows logo key +G - Cycle through Sidebar gadgets (Yes the little add-ons you can download for the sidebar are called "gadgets" - very original, don't you think? Maybe these were named after the famous Inspector Gadget?

- TAB -Cycle through Sidebar controls

I kept reading positive comments about Registry Mechanic in your InfoAve Premium Newsletter so I finally bought it for my year old laptop. That was about six weeks ago, I've had no problems with it and last week I bought another subscription of it for my 3 year old PC. It found/repaired 908 problems. Registry Mechanic is one tool I would recommend for sure. I use IE 7. Judith - happy computer user.

A Comment From Jim R.
"...before I knew about Registry Mechanic, I downloaded a different registry cleaner. In the scan it found almost 1000 errors. When I got Registry Mechanic, it found 600 errors. I have often wondered about the difference. Then I got your wonderful 3rd e-book. You speak often of registry cleaners that cause problems. I believe that I was saved from a problem by going with Registry Mechanic. You two are the greatest! Take Care, Jim R..."
