Where Do All Those Startup Programs Hide?
Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP (Some locations do not apply to Windows 98/ME/NT/2000 all apply to Windows XP)
ADVANCED USERS TIP

While the MSCONFIG tool (Click Start/Run and type MSCONFIG to invoke the configuration tool) provides the user some capability to modify programs that start with Windows, it does not provide comprehensive analysis of all possible startup programs and hidden registry locations. Only those registry locations below shown in green can be modified by using the MSCONFIG tool. It's a good idea for those comfortable with the Window Registry to monitor the following locations below for any mysterious programs which start with Windows. Most of these entry points are hidden from the user. Use REGEDIT to view the following Registry locations. To start the Registry Editor click "Start" "Run" and type in REGEDIT.

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
(In right-pane, Value named "Run" & "Load")

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run
