How Email Worms Work
(Windows All Versions)
Many of the new viruses/worms send emails to
everyone in the infected persons address book and pick a name at random to put
in the "from" field. This makes it nearly impossible to tell where it came from.
When you get an email such as you describe it just means your address is in
someone's address book (or other source on their computer) who has a virus or
worm. When you get these, just delete them. Just for your reference,
viruses/worms also pick up email addresses from other sources on the infected
person's computer including text files, email files, saved Web pages, Word
documents, etc. There really isn't much you can do to stop someone with your
email address in a file on their computer from using your address in the "from"
field since they are not aware of even sending the email.
The other ways your address could end up as a
"from" address on such emails is if your email address is appearing on any Guest
Books, Web Message Boards, or Web pages. Our Cloudeight Guest Book protects your
email address but others might not. Be cautious where you use your address. Get
a more or less disposable free email address from
Yahoo or
Hotmail and use that any time you need to enter your address on the Web.
However, when you're ordering online, we suggest that you use your real address.
Almost all online stores are on secure servers where your email address is kept
hidden from Web robots and address harvesters. Using your real email address
ensures the best and fastest service.
You're doing the right thing by using AVAST and keeping it updated frequently.
Keep your Windows updated too. You can check for updates anytime at
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ . It is also good advice to verify your
system is virus-free by going to
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and use the free online virus scan just to
double-check that all is as it should be on your system.
