Does Internet Explorer 7's Phishing Filter Really Filter Phish?

Windows Internet Explorer 7's Phishing Filter is based on a list of known phishing sites. And it's a good start. We think that everyone who has Internet Explorer 7 installed should turn it on.

If you didn't turn on IE 7's Phishing Filter when you installed Internet Explorer 7 (or if you opted not to turn it on), now is a good time to rethink that decision and turn it on.

- Open Internet Explorer 7 and click "Tools" then "Internet Options"
- Click the "Advanced Tab" at the top
- Scroll down almost to the bottom and look for the header "Phishing Filter"
- Tick the box that says "Turn on automatic website checking
- Click Apply then OK

But....

Any phishing filter or anti-phishing application should be used only as a SECOND line of defense. Not a first line of defense. Don't be lulled into unsafe practices or complacency just because you have ten thousand security program protecting you. As we've stated hundreds of times, there isn't a single program out there that can protect you from yourself.

Your common sense remains the number one security program when you're using your computer and when you walk out your front door. Use it! It might be a good time to read "Use It or Lose It" too!
