What do you really need?

With Christmas shopping looming, we thought it would be a good idea to give you a general guide on Digital Cameras. When buying a digital camera the most important thing to consider is how it will be used. You can get a great camera for a small amount of money if all you want to do is take digital snapshots to share with friends... read on:

If you simply want to take snapshots you can email to friends and family or place your photos on the web, then you don't need a super-duper 8 megapixel $3000 digital SLR. Talk about overkill. A simple 2 to 3 Megapixel digital camera would be fine for this.

However, if you're going to be printing 8 x 10 photographs (or you crop your photos heavily before printing) you're going to need 4 Megapixels or more. If you're looking to print bigger pictures then you're going need to spend some megabucks.

Digital Cameras suitable for those more interested in sharing good quality photos with their friends and family or posting to a Web site can get a nice 2.1 Megapixel camera for around $100. Those of you who are going to want professional quality prints need to be looking at cameras in the 4 to 6 megapixel range. And, if you're going to printing photos larger than 8 x10 then you're going to need an 8 megapixel (or better) camera.

Here are some prices to give you an idea:

12 megapixels & higher (usually SLRs - Single Lens Reflex) $2500 +

 6 to 8 megapixel Digital Cameras  $300 +

 2 to 4 megapixel Digital Cameras $15 +

Most decent 2.0 megapixel cameras are selling for around $75 to $125.00. That's a far cry from four years ago when they were selling for $500 or more!

So, consider how the person you're giving the gift of a digital camera to will use it. You can give a great camera as a gift and not spend a fortune. If the person you're going to give the camera to is a professional photographer, consider buying them a new computer instead. It will be cheaper :-)
