How To Replace Missing Or
Corrupted Windows XP Files
If a critical
Windows file comes up missing, gets destroyed or corrupted by a virus or
worm, or is otherwise unusable, you can usually restore it from your Windows
XP CD.
Select Search
from the Start menu and search the Windows XP CD for the filename.
Remember: files on the CD have abbreviated extensions. For instance .EXE
becomes EX_ (the last E replaced by an underscore). Here's an example,
Wordpad.ex_. When (if) the file you want to replace is found, open a command
prompt ( to open a "Command Prompt" Click Start then Run) and
enter the command expand followed by the full path and name of the file and
the desired destination, for example:
expand
D:\Setup\Wordpad.ex_
C:\Windows\Notepad.exe. If either pathname contains any spaces, surround it
(the entire path) with double quote, like
""D:\Setup\What ever.ex_""
If the file is not found, search again using the unmodified filename (the
full extension, like exe). It might be inside a CAB (compressed)
file, which Windows XP treats just the same as any other folder. In this
case, all you have to do is open the folder, drag the file to the
desired location while holding down the right mouse button, and choose "Copy
Here". Do not choose "Move Here".
