This Week's
Rant
Windows 7 - The last
version of Windows?
For those of you who don't follow the
latest happenings at Microsoft, the next version of Windows, now
code-named "Windows 7" is supposed to be released in early 2010.
Windows 7 is built on the Windows 2008
server kernel (a kernel is the core of the operating system). Some say
that this kernel is introduced in Windows Vista SP1. The kernel is known
as "MiniWin" because it's much smaller and less resource hungry. This
supposedly makes Windows 7 faster. According to reports we've read, it
makes Windows Vista SP1 (if indeed this kernel is introduced by SP1) 9%
faster than Windows Vista. To most of us that would be negligible .
Windows 7 is supposed to start up a lot faster and shut down a lot
faster too. And, everything that works on Vista is supposed to work
exactly the same as it does on Windows Vista. This is good, for sure,
but will it make Windows 7 the whole new version of Windows it started
off to be>
What started off as completely new
departure from previous versions of Windows, is slowly turning into a
glorified service pack for Windows Vista. Why won't we get the
completely new version of Windows that Windows 7 was supposed to be? For
the same reason that Microsoft always rushes products to market before
they're really ready. Money. Plain and simple.

This Week's
Top Questions and Answers
Lee has problems with Internet
shortcuts.
If I try to access a file, say in My Documents, which has the "Big
blue e" of IE, it tries to connect to a website, fails and closes IE.
The same happens when I try to access Adobe Photoshop Help file. My
local computer shop cant understand this either. Any suggestions?
The other thing, is you say not to open links in an email, but open the
website instead in IE yet you show links to sites in your emails. Not a
complaint, just a query.?

computer run better, run faster, and last longer - all automatically. All

Read more here.
Don't take our word for it, here are just two of the dozens of
testimonials we've received from readers, like you!
A Comment from Thelma 9/17/2008 -
For those of you who have never tried
Registry Mechanic, it's a "must have" program. My incoming mail was
stuck in "receiving mail" for an hour. My curser would not move either.
I shut off the power at the tower, and when it came back on I ran
Registry Mechanic. It found 15 problems. Now all is fine. TK
A comment from Jim 10/01/2008 - I don't why I put off trying
Registry Mechanic so long. After I ran it the first time, it was
almost like I got a new computer. My computer was so slow I was thinking
about reinstalling Windows. Now, after running
Registry Mechanic, I don't need to. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Thank you for
recommending this program! Jim.
Michael asks about drivers and other
things
Sometime back you recommended a free driver backup program
-"windrivebackup', which I did install and did do the driver backup. I
just came across a Free program 'DriverMax' that seems to do a lot more
than just backup, but also has the ability to keep ones drivers current.
I have installed it - It looks decent. It has flagged a number of my
drivers as being old and though I have been a bit timid to try it, it
will install the updated drivers. Is it necessary to keep ones drivers
current, if things are working fine?
Would like to see an item on drivers in your newsletter. I just went
through a painful process of reformatting and re-installing Windows, not
realizing that I did not have the computer's installation drivers (My
son's laptop - no installation disks in sight!!)- It was a great
learning experience.
Also an item on creating recovery disks. Love your news letter -Michael

Top Tips and Tricks
A Warning to All Windows Users
Windows all versions
Two months ago we wrote a warning about a new advertising campaign for a
software program that was starting to appear on TV - but only on obscure
cable channels and only in the middle of the night. Now, that same ad is
starting to appear on mainstream cable channels like ESPN, CNN, MSNBC,
FOX and others. This advertisement is misleading and the software is a
scam. Some say it's spyware and adware. If you fall for this scam you're
not only going to be out $30.00 but you may harm your computer.
Read this urgent warning and take care that you're not duped by this
company.
