I just got my 2nd USB drive from you last week; thanks for the quick delivery! I use this one to send back and forth to my daughter, who lives out of state. We exchange pictures this way and no more long downloads, time outs and lost mails! I plan to get another one to exchange back and forth with my grandson. Never knew these little USB drives would come in so handy!

Wow. Thanks for the heads up on Reimage! My old XP computer is running like new. Saved me about $600 - I was about to go out and buy a new computer. Now, I'm totally happy with my old XP computer. Great advice! Thanks for telling me about Reimage!

I have been reading that the older versions of flash player aren't safe. But when I went to download the new version I noticed it tried to install McAfee scan or something similar so I cancelled. What do you know about the newest version of Adobe Flash Player?

Ted asks about Microsoft's new free security program
Love your newsletters and look forward to them every week. What do you know about Microsoft's Security Essentials. It's supposed to be a free antivirus/antispyware program? Look forward to reading your answer. Thanks for all you do for us. Ted G.

Our answer
Thanks Ted. Microsoft has been trying for years to capture a slice of the security program market. It's latest failure was Windows OneCare Live. Microsoft priced this product on par with Norton and McAfee but it was a complete flop. Not only was it expensive it also wasn't very good. It ranked 25th out of 25 programs tested by one independent testing lab when it came to detecting malicious files and spyware.

Now Microsoft is back at it again with a new security program and a new name - unfortunately it appears the results aren't much different. From what we've read the new one isn't much better than the old one, but at least the new one is free. We suppose it's better than having no protection but we feel our recommendations of Avast (free) for an antivirus program and Spyware Doctor (not free) for an antispyware program, will provide you with much greater protection. And for those who don't want to spend any money at all the combination of Avast free and SUPERAntiSpyware (free) will still provide you with greater protection than Microsoft's Security Essentials.

It looks to us like Microsoft couldn't sell OneCare - so they've refurbished it a bit and now offer it free.

With the release of Windows 7 last week, some of you undoubtedly will be going buying a new computer - or buying the Windows 7 upgrade for your current computer. This week's Rant

October Rain

It's not supposed to be this way. The rain I mean. The sullen, gray skies belong in November, not now, not here, not in October. The October rain is cold and steady. The day is morose and dark. Not a sad day but a melancholy mood could set in if I were not careful. The October rain comes too early; the world outside seems out-of-step and incongruent with the world inside --- my mind.

I think we could all let the little things carry us off to dark corners where we don't like to be. I am sure we all do it although few of us, I think, do it intentionally. I hear the rhythm of rain pounding on the window from which I've observed many sunny, unseasonably warm, October days recently. But the seasons, like life, are a balance of good and bad, happy and sad, pleasure and pain, and beginnings and endings. No season goes gently into its good night. No person should go gently into that good night. I will not, I hope.

The rain feels tiny sabers of ice as it stabs at my summer skin. I'm not, ready for this. Not ready for the pounding November gales and chilling rain that cuts my skin and slices down into my bones. I'm not ready. But, in the grand scheme of seasons, and life, what will come will come. Although sometimes I won't be ready for what tomorrow brings, it has always been this way.
