Sherrylee asks up about Outlook 2007
I just recently switched to using Outlook 2007 for my email and just realized that my smileycons won't show the animation in my emails. Is there a way to fix this?

Hope is perplexed and feels violated by some of the emails she received
For several months I have been receiving very undesirable emails which mostly list male prescription drugs in the subject line, and many of them show that they are sent "From" me "To" me. Some of this type mail comes in with other Senders names, but right-clicking on Properties and Details reveal that they have used my email address as the Sender. Clicking on Message Source at the bottom of the Detail box shows

"Return-Path: < (my address).com >
"Received: from mailhost.cac.......etc.......(may be forged)"

I've tried blocking the messages, but discovered that I had blocked myself from sending test messages or copies of emails to myself, which I sometimes do just to see how it will appear to the recipients. I have set up Message Rules to block mail which contains certain words in the subject line, but many of these emails still manage to get by that.

I never open the emails, but it is very annoying and time-consuming to have to delete the ones that slip by my Spam Filter. I feel that it is a form of identity theft and am offended by it. How is it possible for someone to send mail using another person's email address, and is there any way to stop it?

No wonder there is so much confusion

Last week, when we sent our Premium newsletter from the wrong address, we started getting comments from subscribers wondering if we'd been "hacked" or if someone had stolen our account and was sending out newsletters that were somehow infected with nasty things, it made us think. When names matter
All computer users

Here's a simple tip that will help you quickly identify spam emails quickly. Many spammers use sophisticated software to extract your name from your email address. For example, if your email address is catherine.smith62@whateva.com , the software picks up your name as Catherine. So when you open your email, you may be shocked to see:

Dear Catherine,

We have a great deal for you today. You can lose up to 3 pounds a day on our new rutabagas diet! Eat all you want up to 30,000 calories a day and still lose weight. That's right, Catherine, you can drink all the shakes you want, stuff down burgers, and eat mountains of French fries and still lose 3 pounds a day.

What's the secret? We're not going to tell you. This is valuable information. So, Catherine, here's what we're going to do. We're going to give you $10.00 off our great secret.

Interested, Catherine? You betcha!

...and yada, yada, yada.

See? Putting your name in your email address isn't a really good idea. What if, for example, your email address was iamthewalrus@whateva.com . The email above would begin "Dear Iamthewalrus" and you'd know at a glance that it didn't come from anyone you know. What friends would call you Iamthewalrus?

So, the next time you need to create an email address, avoid the temptation to try to get something as close to your real name as you can - and go for something completely different than your real name. You'll be able to identify the scammers and spammers more quickly if your real name doesn't appear in your email address.

This is a simple tip, but one that can save you time -- and trouble.

This week's Rant

Thanks to all of you who commented on last week's story "Increasingly Fat Frank". We know many of you were expecting part 2 of the story this week. We will be featuring part 2 soon, but since this is our last Premium newsletter before Thanksgiving, we wanted to feature one of our favorite essays called "Thanksgiving". We're very thankful that we so many nice folks who subscribe to this newsletter. Many of you have helped us out this year and we don't know where we'd be without you. So this Thanksgiving we are very thankful for the support you give us. We both want to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving

When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of myself as a young boy, watching the Thanksgiving parade on television; mom busy in the kitchen preparing our Thanksgiving dinner and the feeling of love all around. I remember a gray, cold and cloudy day; the steamy windows that cooking made and snowflakes in the air. This was my best Thanksgiving ever. I was 9 years old. It would become the Thanksgiving Day to which all other Thanksgiving Days would be compared. It was also to be my mom's last Thanksgiving, although none of us knew it then.

In my memory I can see my dad in his chair, reading the newspaper, my sister, all of seven years old, helping mom in the kitchen, and me in my innocence, unaware of what precious memories were unfolding. And as I remembered that Thanksgiving Day, I felt the warmth of the love that only family can provide. Life was so simple then. My entire world consisted of a very small house, on a very quiet street, in a very peaceful little town on the shores of Lake Erie. It was all I needed then; everything perfect in that little house on Thanksgiving Day, now so long ago and so far away.
