We appreciate your help very much! Thank YOU for your fantastic response to our new Cloudeight Stationery for Thunderbird! Last Saturday, we introduced our first collection of stationery for Thunderbird and we very excited to see how many of you liked it. We received so many nice emails from you that we can't fit them all in this newsletter, so thanks to all of you who wrote. We are committed to making stationery for Thunderbird. Very soon, we will be releasing two new collections of stationery for all you Thunderbird users; we'll be announcing those new collections in a special newsletter -- so be watching your inbox. Thunderbird is a great alternative to other email programs because, unlike the Windows 10 mail app, it's similar to the email programs you are most familiar with - Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail, etc. If you're interested in Thunderbird, you can download it free from Mozilla, or better yet, we can install it for you, set up your email accounts (up to 3), configure it correctly, and set it up so it's ready to use our new stationery. If you'd like us to set up Thunderbird for you visit this page right now. We've got more stationery coming your way -- very soon! A comment from Judy Just had to say thank you! I don't know Cathern, but as a concerned citizen I totally appreciate your helping her get back her money from those computer scammers. We work HARD for our money, I love hearing a story where the bad guys lose and we win. Thanks EVER so much, you guys are the best in the business in my books. If I had lots of money, you would have some too. LOL A comment from Brenda Thank you so much for the new Halloween stationery. It's fantastic! I had feared that the days of stationery were over and am delighted that they aren't. A comment from John Wanted to thank you and congratulate Cloudeight and your partners. I have been wanting a great email program since Outlook Express and the stationary went away. Cloudeight came through, beautiful job and a great email program Thunderbird and the add on Stationary. Very excited and will be looking forward to the holiday stationary. The program integrated beautifully with Windows 10. Thank you. A comment from Ruth Ann A thousand thanks, TC for your help during my session Tuesday. You found one item of malware which you removed. I haven't had a problem since. I am very glad that you stopped those annoying popups that I couldn't read anyway. I appreciate your installing Thunderbird Mail. I am getting used to it now. It is convenient to have mail from all three email addresses show up on the same page. It looks like Thunderbird's spam filters are better than Windows Live Mail's, too. I was getting a lot of spam at that address. It was letting spam through, yet keeping some of your newsletters and your connection letters from coming through. What kind of sense does that make? A comment from Jill Thank you, Darcy, for changing my emails to Thunderbird - I am slowly getting the hang of it but at least I know it won't disappear!!! You disappeared off my screen before I could thank you properly and I want you to know I appreciate your help - and for coming on early to allow this Aussie to get to bed!! Hooroo! Jill A comment from Arlene Wanted to thank Darcy for installing Thunderbird as my email program and when Cloudeight discovered it wasn't playing nice with Charter they got in touch with me to let me know they were aware of a problem and would come back and fix it free of charge and they did. So thank you very much Darcy it's working like a charm now. Thanks, Arlene A comment from Mary Had Darcy configure my Emsisoft Antivirus today and Boy, is she good. She also turned several things off that were running and start up and my laptop is much faster now. I know if I have any kind of problems with my computer I can rely on Darcy and TC to take care of it. Thank you all so very much. Happy Holidays to both of you. Thanks to Judy, Brenda, John, Ruth Ann, Jill, Arlene, Mary and everyone who wrote to us last week. And thanks to everyone for using our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care services including our Cloudeight Direct Thunderbird Email Setup service. And for all the really great comments about our Cloudeight Stationery for Thunderbird. TC & EB Tony wants to see thumbnails of pictures On my computer using Windows Explorer to view pictures I right click off the pictures and select large or extra large icon and I can view the actual picture. However I was helping my wife so she could view pictures on her laptop computer but all I could get is an icon view, but could not view pictures in her windows explorer. And I can't remember how to get the picture view for her. Can Cloudeight help me get her computer to view pictures? Thank You. Tony Our answer Hi Tony. It's really easy to set up your folder views so you can see thumbnails of images. But the way Microsoft labels things, may seem a bit confusing. Here's how to get back your thumbnail view in your Windows 10 Pictures folder (or any other folder). Open your Pictures folder: Above you can see that even though the folder is showing icon view (small icons) you won't see any thumbnails (nor would you if it were set to "List", "Details", etc.). So let's click on View and select any of the other Icon views (highlighted in green below). You can also choose "Tiles" and "Content" for different thumbnail views. We have our thumbnail view set to large or extra large when viewing pictures in a folder. But it's your personal preference. Grace wants to know how to keep from text from being deleted When I correct a word in windows Mail, it takes out the next letter, I add it in and then it takes out the next letter. How can I fix this please? Our answer Hi Grace. There is a key on your keyboard called "insert" - on my laptop it is on the top row, but may be just on the right side of your keyboard. By default you can insert a letter or text You probably accidently clicked it the "insert" button. If so, instead of inserting a letter or text, it deletes it. Just click it again you'll be back to normal. This has been haunting Windows users since Windows 95. Del needs printer drivers to set up his printer on Windows 10 but his CD/DVD drive does not work Had to purchase a new printer and a CD came with it. I have Win 10 and discovered that my CD player does not work!! It worked with Win 7! I checked Microsoft, but I could not find an answer except there are a lot of people really ticked because w/Win 10, we lost the player! Do you know of a fix that can be downloaded? My printer needs what is on that CD! Thank you for whatever help you can give!! Our answer Hey there, Del. We don't have enough information to help you figure out what's going on with your CD/DVD drive but we can tell you that some people have problems with DVD/CD drive not recognizing disks because AutoPlay is turned off. If yours is turned off, it may appear that Windows does not recognize a disk in the drive. Here is how to check to see if AutoPlay is on, and if it's not on, how to turn it on: Click Start --->Settings--->Devices--->AutoPlay. Make sure AutoPlay is "On", then set your CD/DVD drive as you want it. See screenshot below: If your CD/DVD still won't work - we can tell you how to get your printer setup files and drivers. First, make sure your know your printer model & model number. Next go to the Web site of the printer manufacturer (HP, Canon, Brother, Epson, etc.) And you'll be able to download the same files and drivers that are contained on the installation CD. A side note: Many newer laptops come without a CD/DVD drive which is another reason why every printer manufacturer makes their installation & setup files available by download. Ralph wants to know what happened to System Restore in Windows 10 Where did system restore go in win 10, can't find it where it used to be. Our answer Hi Ralph. Here, we'll show you: And you'll see not only can you access System Restore from here, but you can also configure its settings from here, also: If you want an even faster way to get to System Restore, see our tutorial on making a shortcut to System Restore. Using Control Panel to Set Your Default Programs in Windows 10 Windows 10 Most of you who've been using Windows 10 for any length of time, most of you are using-->System--->Default Apps... to change your default browser, email program, etc. And that's how Microsoft wants you to change them - if you really want to change them - of course, they'd prefer you used what they want you to use. Stuff like Edge, Groove Music, Windows 10 Mail App, and so on. There is only one place you can actually set the default programs for your Windows 10 computer, and that's in Control Panel. So, if you really want to set a program as default, do what we do and use Control Panel. Why? Because many times, when you use "Settings" to set or change your default programs, the programs won't be given all of their defaults. For instance you may set an app ( program ) as default in Settings -->Default apps, and then you look in Control Panel and find it says something like "This program has 11 out of its 15 defaults", see? So setting VLC Media Player as default in Settings---> Default Apps, didn't do the job, did it? Now in Control Panel, I can click "Set this program as default" and give it all its defaults. So the next time you want to set or change a default program, right-click on your Start button, click on "Control Panel", (make sure you're in "Large icon" view), click on Default Programs-->Set Default Programs, and give it a few seconds to load all your installed programs. Then click on a program that you want to make default and click "Set this program as default" After you do that, you should see: "This program has all its defaults" What Programs Are Using the Most Bandwidth On Your Windows 10 PC? Windows 10 Here's a tip that you'll find interesting if you've ever wondered how much bandwidth you use and what programs are using it. Generally, this is just a FYI tip, but if you're on a metered connection (your ISP charges for bandwidth or limits your bandwidth) this tip can help you save money by making sure you stay under your limit, as well as providing you info on what programs are using up the most bandwidth. Let's get started. Press the Windows key + i (or click Start--->Settings) to open Windows 10 Settings. Next click on "Network & Internet" then click on Data usage. See the screenshots below:
Let's look up close and personal...see? When you click on Data usage, you'll see an overview of by type Wi-Fi and/or Ethernet:
If you wish to see what programs are using the most data, click on Usage details. You'll see a list of all the programs (apps) that are using the most data. I don't watch movies on my PC, but as you can see my Chrome browser is using the most data, and the program we use to help folks with our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care Service, is a close second:
The data usage is upgraded automatically and continually, so you'll always have an up-to-date view of your data usage, as well as what programs are using the most bandwidth. So, whether you're just curious about your data usage, or you have limited bandwidth and you want to know where you stand, we hope you find this tip useful. The I's Have It! All Windows users - most popular browsers Recently, we have been getting a lot of questions regarding this: Do you recognize it? How about this: Or this: What about this? Think of the i in the circle as meaning "informative". It's not a "warning". If you click it you'll see something like this: This seems to make a lot of people fearful because it says "Your connection to this site is not private". In other words data passing from your PC to this site and from this site to your PC is not private. And with many sites, it doesn't need to be private. If a site is not asking for personal or sensitive information, like your social security number, credit card number, or similar, the information doesn't need to be private. These are sites your are simply viewing/reading and not sites with which you're exchanging sensitive or personal information. These sites' have URLs (Web addresses) that start with http:// . In the example of CNN above, CNN is not asking for any personal information. You may want to sign up for "Breaking news alerts" and you will have to provide them with an email address - but email addresses are not considered sensitive or personal. In fact, if you use a masked email address to subscribe it's not personal at all. ***You can get masked email addresses and more from https://www.abine.com/index.html. They used to offer a masked email program called MaskMe, now it's called "Blur". Pretty cool stuff...they offer a lot more in the way or privacy enhancement too - so a trip to "Blur" will be worthwhile if you're interested in masked emails, phone numbers, credit card numbers, etc.*** On the other side of the coin, we have secure servers. You can tell they are secure servers because the URLs (Web addresses) start with https:// . Notice the "S" at the end of http. That "S" means secure. And PayPal, for example, has a URL that begins with https:// - and you won't see a circle with an i inside on any secure site. Instead you'll see a lock, as you can see above in the screenshot of PayPal in the browser's address bar. And if you're really into this sort of thing, you can click the lock and you'll see this: You'll notice it says: "Your connection to this site is private". As well it should be. Any site, like a bank, an online store, Social Security Administration, your doctor's or hospital's Web portals, financial services site, or any other site where you may be required to enter very personal, financial, or sensitive information must be secured by a private connection. Make sure that any site that asks for a credit card number, social security number, or any other sensitive personal data - even your street address / phone number - has https:// at the beginning of its URL and a lock showing to the left of its name in the browser's address bar. Conversely, if you're going to a site to read the news, look at the weather, pickup some Windows tips & tricks, or even participate in a forum, you're not going to be required to enter any personal, financial or sensitive information, you don't have to worry if you see this: And now you know the rest of the story! Another Day, Another Miracle PC Does-it-All Program All Windows users "We can clean up, speed up, and protect your computer automatically." "We can make your computer run like new with just two clicks." "We can protect and speed up your computer with one click." There doesn't seem to be any end to the snake oil flowing from the Web. In the past few weeks, thanks to a big advertising budget, and a lot of ads on Facebook, one of these one-click wonders has caught the attention of many of our readers, some of them have written to us to ask if it this one-click wonder is any good. Recently....Many tech sites and newspapers/magazines say their Internet investigator, or tech writer recommends it. They make the ads look like breaking news. "PC Owners Urged to Do This Today! If you live in the U.S and have a windows computer that is older than 6 months old, or just not running how you would like it, then this may be the most exciting article you ever read. Thousands of people across the U.S are rushing to get their hands on the latest system that is speeding up computers and protecting them from malware in minutes..." (or it will say if you live in Australia, or UK, etc. as it is country specific). But it is nothing more than the same old snake oil we've all heard a thousand times. And the snake oil currently making the rounds is "Scanguard" First, let's look at some of the claims Scanguard makes (these claims come from the Scanguard Web site). Boost MemoryLet's go over each of these claims, briefly. Yes, I know that's hard to fathom, but I'm going to try to be brief.. The first claim is that they can boost your memory by removing duplicate files? RAM is your computer's memory. It's stands for Random Access Memory. The more RAM your computer has, the more memory it has, removing duplicate files has nothing to with RAM.. The next claim is that your computer slows down with age. I think they have your computer confused with us. We slow down with age, but our computers do not necessarily slow down with age. But the troubling part is "we help identify specific errors and programs that impact performance to get you back in the game". That's beautifully written sophistry. What errors? What programs? Give me an example. And what do they mean by back in the game? At least that's better than "make your computer run like new". You can never come back to them and tell them they didn't put you back in the game. Right? What the heck does "back in the game" mean? It's supposed to make you think "run like new", without saying it, since they have to know it's not true. Coming soon... They're going to add a firewall. They claim that their new firewall will to protect your data. They tout a "two-way" firewall. Windows already has a two-way firewall. So what? If you believe a firewall is going to protect your personal data, go talk to companies like Target and Yahoo, who both, we're sure, have very expensive firewalls, yet they've had massive amounts of data stolen either because they were hacked in spite of their firewalls, or because one or more of their employees were tricked into giving up their passwords. See this story from the "Boston Globe" how an employee of a large company was tricked into clicking a link in an email that led to a breach that led to the theft of the personal information, including Social Security numbers, of thousands of people. Most of the time, on your PC, you data is not stolen because you do or don't have a firewall. It's stolen because you're tricked into giving up your passwords and logins. That's most individuals have their data stolen, not for lack of firewalls. We're not saying you don't need a firewall, we're saying they don't prevent identity theft - and if you're using Windows 7, 8.1 or Windows 10, you already have a "two-way" firewall We have to give credit where credit is due. These people should be in politics. They have such a way with words. "Browsing Performance -- Let us assist in improving your internet browsing speed. We will improve performance in a matter of seconds by managing unwanted caching and old history."" It's a wonder whoever wrote that isn't in parliament (it's an English company). They want to assist - who? Who do they want to assist? The user? The Web? The universe? The prime minister? Another great and nebulous phrase follows " Internet browsing speed". That's supposed to, we can only imagine, make you think their program is going to make your internet connection faster. But that is not true, so they say "internet browsing speed". Clever. The next sentence is masterful -- "We will improve performance in a matter of seconds by managing unwanted caching and old history."" What is "unwanted caching"? Every site is cached, otherwise you couldn't see it. Actually, caching speeds up the loading of Web pages. What is "old history". If it's history, it can't be "new". It can be recent, but not new. That being said, removing your old browsing history, maybe good housekeeping, but it's not going to speed up your Internet connection, or even your "Internet browsing speed" whatever you think that nebulous term means.. And finally: ""Anti Virus - Our full system scan will locate, quarantine and eliminate malware, trojans and more insuring you are protected against harmful viruses."" We did some research. We could not find Scanguard listed on an independent antivirus testing lab - or in any independent antivirus testing lab's test results. The other stuff they say is just fluff, and if you believe it, you're just going to be out the $49 (per year) they charge. But trusting your computer to an antivirus that does not show up on any of the major independent antivirus testing lab's test results, is taking a change with your security and online safety.. This program is like all the other one-click wonders - except it adds a twist of antivirus. And we couldn't find any antivirus lab results listing Scanguard. The last big one-click wonder to advertise heavily on Facebook was SpeedFix Tool -- which you can read about here. We are throwing Scanguard into the same basket with SpeedFix Tool - with one extra caveat - we would not trust its antivirus component.. The verdict: You don't need Scanguard. In our opinion, if you buy it, you'll be wasting $49. If you have an extra $49 you don't know what to do with, let us know!! As long as we're playing the game of unsubstantiated claims:: I am 2.5 times wiser than EB.. I can run 1.8 times faster than EB. The Elephants of Style and The Cardboard Lady So, I’m writing a short story and it is turning into a novel. And I begin to realize I should have not paid as much attention in English class. I find myself groaning over what is proper English, whether my verbs agree, whether my sentences are complete, or not – and wondering who are these people that make up the silly rules of grammar that we’re all supposed to follow. I’ll tell you who. There are three ninety-two year-old, white-haired (or bald) men and seven elderly women – who are not only older than the three men, but have been working with them as the editors of the so-called writer’s Bible – otherwise known as “The Elephants of Style”. It’s not really called that, but that’s what I call it. It’s about as familiar to me as the mating ritual of the Blue Baliko Ulalume of Borneo. Anyway, the other day, I’m browsing through the local bookstore, drooling over a cardboard manikin of the best-selling and extremely hot and voluptuous author, Lindsey Blueburn, when I look up and I see a young lady – a real one, not cardboard – who is actually browsing through “The Elephants of Style” ON PURPOSE! See was entranced. Actually she was shocked. She looked as shocked as if... Please read the rest of this essay here.. LastPass We have been using LastPass for a lot of years. And while the company has changed hands, one thing that has not changed: LastPass is still best free password manager. The reason why we're featuring it in today's newsletter is to let you know that you can now use LastPass free on all your devices - your Windows PC, Windows Phone, Windows Tablet, Android phone, Android Tablet, iPads, iPhone, and Mac computers. You can even use it on Linux devices. With LastPass you'll have access to all your password no matter where you are or what device you're using. All your passwords are locked by your master password - and after you get LastPass set up, you'll only have to remember one password... your master password. Here are some of the features of LastPass
"Never forget a password. If you don't use a password manager, you're probably not using strong passwords. Sometimes the only thing keeping your information safe if your password. Using a password manager like LastPass, makes it easy to create, store, and use strong passwords. And LastPass does a whole lot more than store passwords and log you into Web sites. We have been using LastPass for a long time and we think it's the best free password manager. And now that you can use it on all your devices for free, it's just become even better. And that's why we're featuring LastPass as today's Cloudeight Freeware Pick. You can learn more about LastPass from here. PS: If you don't want to use LastPass, please use some other password manager! What is the cloud...really? Have you ever seen "The Wizard of Oz"? Well if you have, then you know
what The Cloud is. It's that dark, sinister, twisting column of caliginous
gases and detritus stuff. Or have ever lain down in the grass on a warm
spring day and looked up and imagined dragons and horses and castles
floating by in The Clouds - then you know what The Cloud is and what The
Clouds are. But unfortunately the cloud we are talking about is not so
ephemeral or delicate...nope it's mostly hard stuff like EB's head or the
cider in EB's fridge.
