See? We Told You So!

Five years ago, back in 2011, we wrote a series of articles about Web of Trust (WOT). In those articles we questioned the trustworthiness of Web of Trust and advised our readers NOT to trust Web of Trust.

We showed how a few WOT “community” members manipulated WOT ratings by using automated scripts and bots, and were able to get legitimate sites of WOT’s “WARNING” list. WOT’s community steered users away from legitimate sites and unfairly hurt a lot of small Web sites and small internet businesses.

Five years later it comes to light and according to a recent investigation, it appears that WOT is collecting personal user data and selling it to other companies.

A comment from Georgina

Darcy just whizzed around my screen cleaning up all the useless stuff I'd added somehow to my computer. I really appreciate the time she spent and her patience....so much correcting needed. So glad we can appeal for help from someone we can trust. Thank you Darcy

Happy 90th Birthday, Georgina: Thanks so much for your nice comments! We both hope you had a very nice birthday! TC & EB

A comment from Arlene
I wanted to thank Darcy for installing Thunderbird as my email program and when Cloudeight discovered it wasn't playing nice with Charter they got in touch with me to let me know they were aware of a problem and would come back and fix it free of charge and they did. So thank you very much Darcy it's working like a charm now. Thanks, Arlene

A comment from Roberta
So glad to see Cloudeight Stationery ride again in THUNDERBIRD--the first three (collections) so far are just AWESOME----I am sure that a lot of us missed using your awesome stationeries. So welcome back and keep them coming----Roberta

A comment from William
Thanks for the Thunderbird stationery. As a longtime subscriber I missed the previously available stationery greatly. Look forward to further additions to the range

A comment from Rea
I just want to say thanks to TC for coming thru again and helping me on this computer of mine. This time he installed Thunderbird Mail for me and it is doing fine and again he was very knowledgeable and friendly. It is so comforting to know that they can fix your computer in the comfort of your own home and as they are doing their thing, the cursor on their mouse just flies by and I just sit back and watch and know that things will be taken care of and I can still afford to eat!!! What I am trying to say is, you know it won't cost an arm and leg and yet the job will be done. Thanks again TC and EB!

A comment from Bobbie G
Just want to let you know for your information. I have Emsisoft, and it did its usual scan tonight and when it finished , it gave me an error message. So, I emailed Emsisoft thinking I would probably hear from them in a couple of days.(This was last night, Sunday)/ Well, it wasn't 10 minutes and I received an email from Mr. David Biggar, Chief Tech Support Officer. He told me what to do, I did it and the problem was fixed - nothing serious. I am so pleased with Emsisoft and their service. Just thought you would like to know. Bobbie G.

A comment from Jacquie
I have just had another of those mind boggling sessions with the incomparable mistress of the Internet. I have had trouble with my Thunderbird mail and as ever, Darcy has devoted considerable time, thought (and not to mention infinite patience with my considerable lack of knowledge) in giving me an easy to follow solution. If you have a problem and you are in any doubt about using the first rate services from C8 get in touch with them immediately. Their approach cannot be bettered.

Thanks to Georgina, Arlene, Roberta, William, Rea, Bobbie, Jacquie and everyone who wrote to us last week. And thanks all those who used our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care services last week, including our Cloudeight Direct Thunderbird Email Setup service. And thanks to all of you for the nice comments about our Cloudeight Stationery for Thunderbird. TC & EB

Max has Thunderbird but...
Recently a friend downloaded Thunderbird email program for me. I am wondering if you would be interested in installing it correctly as I do not know where all the folders I had under Windows Live Mail are located. A message (one line) says that the content of the email has been blocked, (pictures). Of course I will be expected to pay for this service. I have had Emsisoft for a long time and have been more than happy with this program . I await your reply. Max H.

Our answer
Hi Max. We offer a Thunderbird setup service and we can get Thunderbird configured correctly for you. There are a lot of settings that have to be changed from their defaults to make everything work the way most folks want it to.  We can also help you with getting your email messages and folders from Windows Live Mail - and your address book as well. Our Thunderbird setup service is not only for new installations, but for anyone who has installed Thunderbird, but not sure how to set it up so it works they way they want to  - or those want to import email and folders from Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail. Please check out our Thunderbird setup service.

Rebecca has Emsisoft but still a scam showed up on her computer
I turned on my laptop Sunday evening and up popped the same scam you wrote about. I was surprised because I DO use Emsisoft and it is up-to-date. i just hit the power button and turned off the computer, and once restarted the did now show up again. Just thought you should know that it did get through! I still trust Emsisoft, as this seems to be a new twist to malware and I know they will eventually catch up to it. Thanks for the heads up though.....I didn't panic!

Our answer
Hi Rebecca. Neither Emsisoft nor any other security program can keep you from being scammed. Only you can. The screens you see that pop up in your browser are not viruses, Trojans or even malware - they're advertisements that try to induce you to call a number and/or download something. They try to scare you into buying repair services you don't need. There is nothing installed on your computer at the point you see ad, therefore nothing to protect you from.

The fact that the ad may appear to be malware or coming from your system, is how the ad was made -- to fool you into thinking it is malware, complete with beeping sounds and pictures!

We have written many times that the #1 security software you can use is the software between your ears. Recognizing when something isn't right is the first step in stopping scammers, as well as protecting your computer from problems.

Emsisoft is doing its job - preventing malware from being installed on your computer. Had you called or contacted the scammers they would not have installed malware on your computer either - they would have run a bunch fake scans to show that you were infected, then they would have installed some freeware on your computer and run another fake scan on your computer showing it was cleaned up. And for this, they would have charged you several hundred dollars. For the outrageous prices charged by most of these scammers, you could buy a new computer.

You did the right thing. Powering off your computer is a quick & sure way to get rid of the web page that looks for all the world like it's part of your computer. Good job!

For those who have never seen a what one of these scams look like, read this article.

Marilyn has questions about email
How do I prevent email messages from being kept on server after downloaded to computer. This is a nuisance when I go to a second computer. Once downloaded to one computer all messages should not be left on the server. Thank you. Marilyn

Our answer
Hi Marilyn. If you set up all mail as IMAP vs. POP3, any mail you download and delete, or if you download and move to another folder, will be that way on the other computer. Make sure you have IMAP set up on both computers. If we set up Thunderbird for you, we always set it up as IMAP unless your email provider does not offer it.

To clarify, assuming IMAP is setup on both, if you download an email and just leave it in your inbox, it will also download on the other computer and be in your inbox when you open your email.

If you download an email and delete it from your inbox, it will not be in the inbox when you open your email program on the other computer.

If you download an email and move it to another folder on one computer, that mail will moved on the other computer too.

If you have your email setup on a phone, and you read an email and delete it, you won't see that mail on either computer when you check your email. All mail is "mirrored" (synchronized) online on your email providers mail servers, ( or if you were to log in from a web page) on all your devices and computers.

IMAP is not new, it's been around for well over a decade. It is very popular now because so many people check email from multiple locations on multiple devices and IMAP make sense for them because since the mail is synchronized between the mail server and all a user's devices.

POP3 was popular when users accessed email from one device and mail server space was limited to a few megabytes. Back when POP3 was the only email protocol available, users would download mail and remove email from the mail server and store it all on their computer.

I hope this clarifies IMAP vs. POP3 for you.

Emily's computer won't start
My computer wont start. A few days ago our electricity was off about an hour. When it came back on my computer won't start. At all. I have unplugged and tried again many times. No luck. There is power to modem and I checked power to computer, which is there. Called server to make sure. Looked inside tower to see if anything looked black or "fried." Not that I can see. Vista OS. I know it's old but it was working fine until the electricity went off. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks. Emily

Our answer

Hi Emily. First off, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) has nothing to do with whether your computer is turned on, working, etc. They are only to provide you with Internet access so you can view Web pages, send and receive email, etc.  Power to the modem has nothing to do with the PC itself either.

It sounds to us like something inside was fried by a power surge if your computer is not coming on. Our guess is that it's your computer's power supply, the /off switch or the motherboard. It would not be something you could see just by looking inside your PC.

Vista is quite old and I would advise not putting any money into this to fix it as you will be losing all support anyway as far as updates from Microsoft and most major programs.

A new laptop will run you around $300 and the ONLY things you really need are the following:

1. Screen size you like

2. 4 gig of RAM (more if you can get it)

3. 500 gig to 1 TB hard drive (most all on the market have this as minimum)

Past that, don't let anyone tell you that you need other bells and whistles unless you are a power gamer or 3D artist and do a lot of 3D rendering.

Stella asks about the "print command" in Windows 10
Is there a special "print" command on Windows 10?

Our answer
Hi Stella. The print command in Windows 10 is the same as it was in all previous versions of Windows. If the program you're using does not have a print icon, just use the shortcut CTRL + P to print.

What You Should Do If a Major Windows 10 Update Causes You Major Problems
Windows 10

If a major Windows 10 update causes you major problems, the best way to fix it is to roll back to the previous build.  Let's clarify -  a major Windows 10 update is called a "build" and non-major (is that a word?) updates are called, "updates".

The faster you act after a major update the more likely you'll be successful restoring the previous "build" of Windows 10, without losing any personal files or programs.

The first thing you should do if a major Windows 10 Update cause you MAJOR problems (not minor problems) is this:

1. Press Start --->Settings (Or press the Windows Key + I )
2. Click on "Update & Security"
3. In "Update & Security" click on "Recovery"
4. In Recovery you should have 3 options "Reset this PC", "Roll Back to the previous build" and "Advanced startup"

Cloudeight InfoAve
.
If you don't see "Go back to an earlier build" as one of your choices then:

a.) The update was not a major update

b.) Too much time has passed since the major update was installed

If you see the option but it's not clickable, then you waited too long.

If you have minor problems with other updates (not major updates) you can uninstall the update by doing the following:

1. Click Start --- Settings.
2. In Settings, click on Update & security
3. In Update & security, click on Windows Update
4. In Windows Update, click on Advanced Options
5. In Advanced Options, click on View your update history.
6. In Update history click on Uninstall updates and a list of updates will appear. The date of each update will be shown on the far right of the list.  You can uninstall updates from there.

Find Stuff Faster On Windows 10
Windows 10

We've come to learn, as far as finding things on our PCs, Cortana isn't the fastest gun in the wild West. If you're searching for something on your computer, we're going to show you a faster way to find it, and it's easy to use too.

Press the Windows Key + E to open File Explorer (formerly known as Windows Explorer)

Cloudeight InfoAve

Up above the file/folder/drive listing you'll see a very faint search box with "Search this PC" barely visible. See above. Let's zoom in, shall we?

Apparently, Microsoft wants you to use Cortana as they don't make this optional (and faster) search very noticeable, but thanks to our resident Hawkeye, EB, who discovered this little trick, we can all search our Windows 10 PCs a little faster!

Cloudeight InfoAve

Another helpful hint. If you know the folder that the file you're looking for is in, switch to that folder first and then search - it's even faster!

A Simple Way to Access the Advanced Boot Menu in Windows 10
Windows 10

The Advanced Boot Options menu in Windows 10 gives you additional options which can be very helpful if you’re having trouble booting your Windows 10 PC or if you're having other problems with Windows 10.

According to Microsoft, if your computer fails to boot twice, Windows will automatically boot into Advanced Boot Options which, among other things provides you with troubleshooting options to help you fix whatever is wrong with your PC or preventing it from booting. However we've found that after your computer fails to boot twice, more often than not the Advanced Boot Options menu does not appear, and users are stuck sitting there looking at a black screen.

Thankfully, there’s an easy way to access the Advanced Boot Options menu when you restart.

1. Hold down your Shift key and click on the Start button.

2. Do not release the Shift key and click on Power in the start menu.

3. While still holding down the Shift key, click on Restart.

4. Your computer will restart to the Advanced Boot Options menu. If you want to try it out, go ahead. One of the options on the Advanced Boot Options menu is “Continue — Exit and continue to Windows 10” which boots you back into Windows normally.

Take a look at the graphic below for an up close & personal view:

Cloudeight InfoAve

Windows 10 Advanced Boot Menu (below):

Cloudeight InfoAve

If you click on "Troubleshoot" you'll have some options that can get Windows up and running for you.

Cloudeight InfoAve

You can use System Restore, Startup Repair (if you're having problems starting Windows normally) or access a Command prompt and other helpful tools that can help rescue you from potentially serious Windows problems.

Recently we have had several people who were not able to boot into Windows at all so they couldn't get to the power button to boot into Advanced Boot Options. We have had some success (no guarantees) with users powering down their computers, waiting for a couple of minutes, holding down the SHIFT key while turning on the computer and continuing to hold down the SHIFT key until the advanced boot menu appears.

And... about blank black screens. If, after an update, restarting your computer takes you to a black screen, it's best to wait 3 to 5 minutes before doing anything else. We have found on our own computers that waiting for a few minutes when seeing a black screen at boot usually ends up with normal Windows screen after 3 to 5 minutes. So, if you see a black screen - wait for a few minutes before you assume something's seriously wrong with your computer.

Three Unrelated Quick Windows Tips
Windows 7, Windows 8x and Windows 10

1. Using a new email program does not require a new email address

A number of users have asked us if they can use their current email addresses with a new email program. The answer is yes you can. You don't need a new email address just because you change email programs. So now you know your current email addresses will work in most available email programs.

2. If you can't get out of tablet mode in Windows 10 - try this!

We have worked on many Windows 10 PCs that were accidently switched to tablet mode. While tablet mode is sweet for tablets, unless you really love Windows 8, it's not so sweet for desktops, laptops and all-in-ones. The way to turn off tablet mode is:

a.) Windows Key + I to open Settings (or Start -- > Settings) and click on System

b.) In System click on "Tablet Mode" and turn the switch to "Off"

But we have found out that this does not always turn off tablet mode. If you're one of those who finds yourself stuck in tablet mode on Windows 10 and turning it off in Settings-->System-->Tablet mode does not work, do this:

a.) Follow the instructions above to turn off tablet mode in Settings---> System.

b.) Press the Windows Key + A to open Windows 10 Action Center, click on "Tablet mode" and turn it off there also.

3. Did you know that Task Manager is on the Windows 10 "Power" menu?

Most of you know that when you right-click the Windows 10 start button you get the so-called "Power menu". But did you know that you can open Task Manager from there too? It's right there in the list - we've overlooked it many times. So now you have another way to get to Windows 10 Task Manager.

Thunderbird Email Tip: Importing Mail Into Thunderbird
Windows 7, Windows 8x, Windows 10 with Thunderbird installed

If you use IMAP to access your email account(s) with your email program, you won't need to worry about importing mail if you switch to Thunderbird. IMAP mirrors what's on the mail server on the web -- so when you set up your email in Thunderbird, all your email and folders will be there.

If you are using Windows Live or Windows Mail, you can import mail from them into Thunderbird,  but many programs don't allow for exporting/importing mail. Email clients  such as IncrediMail (unless you pay them big bucks), and Outlook (wrong format), or older/other email programs without export features.

So here's our workaround for importing your mail from email programs that normally don't allow you to export email messages and/or folders. This takes a few minutes, but if you have a lot of mail saved and don't want to do without it, this tip is for you!

1. Create a Gmail account at http://gmail.com  It's free.

2. Setup the gmail account in your old/current email program and be sure you set it up as IMAP. (The other option will be POP3 but you can't use that with this tip).

3. Once you Gmail account is set up, drag folders you have saved into the Gmail account. Do one a time, and give it a few moments to move, as it is syncing with the webserver. If you are on a slower connection, you might need more time .. just be patient.

4. Once completed, close your old/current mail program, setup Thunderbird, or have us do it for you. When you setup the Gmail account, you will see ALL your mail!

If you don't feel comfortable doing this, we can help you with it with our Thunderbird setup service.

Seasons

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…” (Ecclesiastes)

It’s November. One of the gloomiest months of the year here in my little corner of the world. I am somewhere in between the soft warm breezes of summer, and the howling bitterly cold winds of winter.

I pour myself a cup of coffee, take a sip and relax. I’m tired so I put my head back and I close my eyes. I find myself drifting back to another day, another season, another time – a younger and stronger me – alone in the snow covered woods of a January day not so long ago…

I find myself alone on a snowy trail in my most favorite of hiking spots. It is winter; the sun seldom shines in Ohio this time of year. Others become melancholy and blue in January’s incessant cloudiness, but I revel in it.

The dark overcast days bring a special sorrow with them, but it is a reflective sadness. A sadness that inspires introspection which brings an inner-peace. It causes me to ponder the nature of things and muse on the wonder of life.

The bonds of long shadows and dark gray skies will, to be sure, someday be broken by spring’s renaissance. Spring is the time, after all, when the world is reborn in the bright vernal light of the comparatively immortal star we call the sun.

Unlike most others, I choose to relish these dark gloomy days of winter. I will remember that this winter has but a short engagement on the stage of my life.

And it occurs to me, as I walk beneath the endless gray canopy of winter clouds, how very special and unique each life really is.

As I pass the leafless, snow-covered branches and occasional sad brittle bushes with bright, red berries holding on tenuously to them in spite of the bitter, shrill wind...

Charles Dickens - Love his hairLibriVox

If you like to read, but don't have the time, or you can't see well enough to read, or if you're just too lazy to read, then this site's for you. It's like a rummage sale of free audio books -- mostly classics. The best part of this site is the hundreds of free audio books you can download and listen to. The second best part is you is LibriVox is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get. Sorry, Forrest Gump.

You see, LibriVox exists to make all public domain literature available in audio format to everyone. The fun part is you never know who's going to be reading to you or what they're going to sound like. That's because LibriVox doesn't care what its volunteer readers sound like - perhaps that's why there may more than on version of an audio book. Lucky for us all that neither EB nor I have volunteered to read for LibriVox, thus sparing you that horrid experience.

All the audio books on LibriVox are free and available in several formats. Most of you will like the audio books in zip format for PCs - just unzip the file, click on audio book and listen to your heart's content. If you are rich and have an iPad or iPhone you can get the audio books from iTunes. There are several other formats available, so choose the one that's right for you.

LibriVox makes it easy for you to find what you're looking for .For instance, being the dummy that I am, I typed in Edgar Allen Poe and got zero results. But when I search for Edgar Allan Poe I got 16 audio books, not surprisingly, all those books were written by Poe. Who is reading them, I have no clue although the one I downloaded had a lady with a nice-sounding voice reading it - it was not EB for sure!

Now, because I've run out of funny things to say about this site, I will turn it over to the site's keepers to fill you in on some other important goodies about LibriVox:
"About LibriVox

LibriVox Objective:

To make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet.

Our Fundamental Principles:

LibriVox is a non-commercial, non-profit and ad-free project
LibriVox donates its recordings to the public domain
LibriVox is powered by volunteers
LibriVox maintains a loose and open structure
LibriVox welcomes all volunteers from across the globe, in all languages

What We Do

LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain, and then we release the audio files back onto the net for free. All our audio is in the public domain, so you may use it for whatever purpose you wish.

Volunteering for LibriVox is easy and does not require any experience with recording or audio engineering or acting or public speaking. All you need is a computer, a microphone, some free recording software, and your own voice. We accept all volunteers in all languages, with all kinds of accents. You’re welcome to volunteer to read any language you speak, as long as you can make yourself understood in it. You don’t need to audition, but we do suggest a 1-Minute Test recording just to check your setup. We’ll accept you no matter what you sound like.

We operate almost exclusively through Internet communications on our forum, where all your questions will be answered by our friendly community..."
Legal Stuff! Yum! Yum!

LibriVox makes a point that all of the available audio books are public domain and copyright free in the good, ol' USA. However, LibriVox says, they may not be copyright free in your country, so you're supposed to check with your country to see if they are copyrighted there. If your country has a toll-free "is it copyrighted?" line, then by all means call to see if "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, for example, is under copyright restrictions in your country. I would be shocked if it were since Poe was born in the USA, lived in the USA, died in the USA and, still, I think, buried in the USA.  We are  putting this in here so your country can't come back and sue us for not telling you to call your local copyright police and check to make sure the audio books you download are not going to expose you to copyright infringement lawsuits from people like Edgar Allan Poe (who died in 1849), Daniel Defoe (who died in 1731) and Charles Dickens (who died in 1870 and whose hair I love). FYI: That's a photograph of good old Charles Dickens up there at the start of this Cloudeight Site Pick review.

So, now that you've been warned about copyright lawsuits that may be brought against you by ghosts and ghouls in countries other than the USA, we hereby send you off in pursuit of free audiobooks - mostly classics - read by anonymous people whose voices are not screened by anyone to make sure they sound OK - which sounds really interesting to us. If you live in the USA, you don't have to check with the copyright police since all the auidobooks on LibriVox are 100% guaranteed to be in the public domain, and free from copyright restrictions, which means no one will come back to sue you for copyright infringement, not even Edgar Allan Poe.

Please visit LibriVox and open your ears - it's time for some free audio books!

Be sure to have your friends subscribe to our newsletter, because they won't find reviews like this anywhere else! The New York Times review of LibriVox pales in comparison to ours!

Our new Cloudeight Direct Thunderbird Email Set-up Service

Mozilla Thunderbird is a great alternative for those of you who have been using Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail on Windows 10 and who don't want to use the limited Windows 10 Mail App. Thunderbird is compatible with all email accounts, including all Microsoft accounts, Windows 10 updates don't affect it, and has the familiar look of Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail. However it's very different as far as setting it up and configuring it.

So we're offering Cloudeight Thunderbird Email set-up service.

Our new Thunderbird Email set-up service includes installing and setting up Thunderbird to look and work as much like Windows Live Mail / Windows Mail as possible. We'll configure up to 3 email accounts for you and set them up as IMAP so that all your mail messages and folders on your mail server(s) are included in your Thunderbird Email program too! Plus, we'll give you a list of tips & tricks to help you get the most out of Thunderbird Email program.

We are now scheduling Thunderbird Set-up sessions. Get email that works the way you want it to -- get your Cloudeight Direct Thunderbird Email Set-up Service key right now and put an end to the Windows 10 email merry-go-round.

And we're now making stationery that works great in Thunderbird too!
