Wendy is shocked by all the scamming
going on
I am shocked at the huge amount of scamming. It seems to have reached a
whole new level tricking unsuspecting people to disclose private
information. It must be a nightmare for those who fall for it.
Our answer
More than viruses, Malware, PUPs, Ransomware and all the other related bad
stuff, online scams are the most ubiquitous. Seldom does a week go by when
we don't receive at least a dozen letters from people who have encountered
an online scam - most of the time a tech support scam... like the ones we
covered in our article here.
http://www.thundercloud.net/infoave/new/tech-support-scams-microsoft-support-scams-scams-scams-everywhere/
Darcy watched a documentary a while back, and it showed huge pole barn
style warehouses, some as long as half a mile, filled with desks crammed
next to each other and tens of thousands of people sitting in front of
computers working these scams. They get paid next to nothing, to scam
people, trick them into signing up for things, etc. This documentary was
made years ago, and you can bet that this sort of thing has expanded
exponentially in India and other countries around the world.
Everyone needs to be aware that scams abound on the Internet and it's only
going to get worse. Why? Because there are billions of dollars in it, and
the overhead is low. To scam outfits, it's pretty "easy money".
Christine wants to
know how to get to add/remove programs in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update
How do I get to the add or remove items?
Our answer
Hi Christine. Add or remove items (programs) is in Control Panel. Since
you're using Windows 10 Fall Creators Update :
1. Right-click the start button, and click "RUN"
2. Type CONTROL in the run box & press Enter.
3. In Control Panel, click on "Programs and features" if you're in Icon
view. Or click on "Programs" if you're in Category view. Then "Uninstall a
program".
If you're using older versions of Windows 10, the method above will work
just fine too. But in previous versions of Windows 10, you also have the
option to right-click the start button and choose "Control Panel" that
option was removed in Creators Update. Either way you get to Add & Remove
the same way once you're in Control Pane.
One more thing. In Windows 10, you can uninstall programs without going to
Control Panel. Open your start menu, right-click on any program you
installed, and you'll see an option to "Uninstall" right there. Saves a
lot of time.
Gus has a problem with Windows 10 File History
II have a message that the File History drive has been disconnected for
too long. Have tried to reconnect the drive and do backups but keep
getting the same message. I'm at a loss now. I have valid repair keys if
needed but I need some help to restart my File History. Thanks, Gus
Our answer
Hi Gus. You might want to try resetting File History. I've uploaded a
couple of files to help make this easy for you.
Download this Cloudeight zip file.
Unzip the file. There are two files inside. One is a batch file and one is
Visual Basic script. You should only need to run the batch file
(double-click it to run)
So here are the instructions.
1. Unplug the external drive
2. Unzip the file above and double-click on the batch file.
3. Restart your PC
4. Plug in your external
5. Try setting up file history.
If this does not work, then go back and follow the instructions above,
only this time double click on the VBS script (in the zip file) instead of
the batch file.
Let us know if this solves your problem.

Catherine says Microsoft locked her
computer
Hi. I am getting a notice on my computer from Microsoft, or so it says,
they lock my computer and i have to shut it down and turn it back on to
use it. I called them and they want to diagnose for free and I know what
happens next because they got me last year. Is there is some way that you
can put a stop to this?
Our answer
Hi Catherine. If we could put an end to all the scams going on, we'd do
it. We'd be millionaires! But alas we can't. These tech support scams keep
evolving and changing. And since they are scams - and merely ads -
antivirus/anti-malware can't stop them... and neither can ad blockers stop
them all.
The best defense against these kinds of scams is knowledge. Learn what
they look like (and sound like) so you can recognize them. Learn what the
methodology is. Learn the different ways to get close the ad pages - not
all can be closed using ALT + F4. And most importantly, NEVER GET TRICKED
INTO CALLING THE NUMBER SHOWN IN THE WARNING!
We have written several articles to help folks deal with these kinds of
tech support scams.
The more you know, the safer you'll be.
Microsoft is Never Going to Tell You Your Computer is Infected
Tech Support Scams are Everywhere
Tech Support Scams Continue to Evolve
We hope this helps everyone who has ever
encountered one of these support scams... that would be almost everyone
who browses the Internet.
Ruth wants a program to open special zip
files
I am hoping that you can help me finding a free Zip file opener.
I can not open the Zip files that I get for my embroidery machine. Thank
you in advance... Ruth
Our answer
Hi Ruth. We don't know what type of compressed files you have, but 7-Zip
is a free program that opens almost every kind of compressed (zip ) file
including GZ and RAR.
You can download it free from
http://www.7-zip.org .
There's a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. If you don't know what
version your PC is, right-click on My Computer (or Computer) and click
"Properties".
Shae wants to get rid of her Yahoo accounts
Hello TC and Darcy. I have three very old, inactive Yahoo accounts on my
desktop PC and my iPad. I want to delete Yahoo completely! I have spent
hours incessantly changing the passwords ... eventually gaining access on
a couple of the accounts for that moment ... and then the passwords stop
working. I cannot sign in unless I change the password every time.
The other thing to note is one of my Yahoo accounts appears to be
connected to Ireland on the background format that comes up when I change
the password again. I don't live in Ireland! When I do actually succeed
with a new password sign in there is no unusual email awaiting me.
Can you recommend the best go-to-easy-to-follow-site that will rid my
computers of this problem? This is the one computer "issue" I can't seem
to deal with by myself. Thanks! Shae.
Our answer
Hi Shae. First, be sure you are saving the correct password when you
change it - it is case sensitive, so copy/paste for accuracy. To terminate
an account, do this
1. Sign in to the yahoo account you want to terminate.
2. click this link once you have logged in:
https://login.yahoo.com/account/delete-user
3. click continue and then confirm who you are, and choose terminate
Yahoo notes the following so be aware of this: Your account will be
reactivated if you sign in to it within approximately 40 days of closing
it, with longer hold periods for accounts registered in Australia or New
Zealand (approximately 90 days), and Brazil or Taiwan (approximately 180
days).
Linda wants to know how to open an .ico
file
How do I open an .ico file. I have file that reads Ikona484887939.ico. Is
there a FREE program that would open it. I have tried to google but there
seems to be different programs and I don't know what to choose. Your help
would be very much appreciated. TIA Linda
Our answer
Hi Linda. An .ico is an icon file. We use IrfanView to view them. It's
free. Ico files are not actually images - they are image containers for
computer icons. Generally one ico file has multiple sizes and color depths
of the image for viewing in various settings. For example, if you view a
folder icon in Windows Explorer, it appears very small, but if you appear
a folder icon on your desktop, it will be much larger. Windows also lets
you resize icons from very small to extra large. They're all the some .ico
file.
Here is a link to IrfanView:
http://www.irfanview.com/ . Be careful when installing IrfanView. From
time to time, it may be bundled with something else. As long as you are
careful when you install it, and make sure you uncheck whatever else it
wants to install, you'll be fine.

Windows 10’s Fresh Start
Windows 10 Creators Update, Fall Creators Update and newer
We posted an article on Fresh start when Windows 10 Creators Update was
first released, and when not many of you had it yet. But by now, most of
you have the Creators Update, and now the Fall Creators Update, so
we’re going to refresh Fresh Start in Windows 10 Creators Update, Fall
Creators Update and newer versions of Windows.
Fresh start in Windows 10 Creators Update, is a great way to start off
fresh with a brand new computer or start fresh with a Windows 10 computer
that isn’t running very well.
Fresh start clean installs a fresh, updated copy of Windows 10 while
saving your personal files and some of your settings. It’s a great way to
start fresh with a new computer, or start fresh with any Windows 10
computer with Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) or newer
installed.
Fresh start is a great way to rid a brand new computer of the
preinstalled bloatware and trialware that manufacturers love to install on
new computers as they try to squeeze out an extra buck or two… or Fresh
start may be just the ticket to freshen up a Windows 10 computer that
isn’t running very well.
Before we start, we recommend that you have good backup of all your
personal files. While Microsoft says a Fresh start saves your personal
files and some of your settings, it’s better to be extra safe than extra
sorry. Also keep in mind, if you do a Fresh start on a computer you’ve
been using for a while, you’ll all the programs and apps you have
installed, will have to be reinstalled after Fresh start completes.
Fresh start is different than Windows 10 Reset. Windows 10 Reset resets
your computer with all the pre-loaded manufacturer bloatware, trialware
and pre-loaded Windows 10 apps.
Fresh start, saves your personal files and some of your settings, wipes
out everything, installs a clean, updated copy of Windows and then returns
your personal files and folders back to their previous locations.
With all that stuff out of the way… let us begin.
Fresh start is super easy to do. Go to Settings > Update & security
>”More recovery options” and click on “Learn how to start fresh with a
clean installation of Windows.”:
When you click on “Learn how to start fresh…”, you’ll see this:
Now, all you need to do is click the “Get started” button and you’re on
the way to a Fresh start.
Reminder: Fresh start will wipe out wipe out all the
manufacturer’s bloatware and trialware and preinstalled apps. However it
will also wipe out any programs (antivirus, Office, etc.) you installed on
the computer as well.
And though Microsoft claims that Fresh start will keep your personal
files and some of your settings, we highly recommend that you maintain a
good backup of all your personal files (pictures, music, documents,
videos, movies, etc.). Fresh start really means a fresh start. So, are you ready for a Fresh start?
Use Cortana to Sign Out, Shut Down,
Restart or Lock Your Computer
Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update)
Here's a quick and easy tip for those of you who have installed the
Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. You can use Cortana to Sign Out, Shut
Down, Restart, or Lock your computer with simple voice commands.
For example, try this:
Say "Hey Cortana". When "she" is listening, say "Lock my computer" or
"Lock my PC". She'll say "Locking your computer" and you'll see the lock
screen appear and you'll have to sign in. This is a good way to test
this, since locking your computer does not log you out of Windows so
whatever you had running when your computer was locked will be ready and
waiting for you when you sign in.
In addition to the above, you can use the following commands. In every
case you have to summon Cortana by saying "Hey Cortana!" (unless you
changed Cortana's default settings)"
"Hey Cortana:
"Shut down my computer."
"Restart my computer."
"Log off my computer."
Remember: You can use the word "computer" and "PC" interchangeably....
Cortana treats them the same.
Turn Off All Background Apps in Windows
10
Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) and Fall Creators Update
(version 1709)
Prior to Windows 10 Creators Update, turning off background apps meant you
had to go through a long list of apps and turn each off separately. In
Windows 10 Creators Update and Fall Creators Update you can turn off all
background apps by flipping one switch.
To turn off all Windows 10 background apps, do this:
- Open Settings (From Start, Action Center or by using the Windows
Key + i shortcut)
- Click on "Privacy"
- In "Privacy" click on Background apps,
- At the top of the Background apps dialog, turn the switch under
"Let apps run in the background" to "Off"
Turning the switch to off does not prevent you from using the apps. If you
have live tiles on your start menu (weather, news, etc.) those may not
function if you turn the switch off. But if performance and privacy are
important to you, you can turn off all background apps in Windows 10
Creators Update and Fall Creators Update quickly by flipping just one
switch.
Six Classic Windows Tips For All Windows

- Press Ctrl+Shift and then right-click on the Taskbar and you’ll

- Quickly create a shortcut by holding down the Ctrl+Shift keys and
dragging and dropping the file or folder to the desired destination.

How to Shutdown or Restart Your
Computer When You Can't Access the Start Menu or the Shutdown dialog
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10
If you've ever had the unfortunate experience of trying to shutdown or
restart your computer when your Start menu or taskbar are missing or
unresponsive...it can be daunting. One obvious way to shut down is to
simply power off your computer, but there are better ways.
Here's a way you can shutdown your computer without using the Start menu
or Shutdown/Restart dialog, and it's very easy to do.
Just press & hold down the Windows Key and tap the R key to open a Run
dialog.
In the Run box...
To shutdown your computer type SHUTDOWN and press enter.
To restart your computer type SHUTDOWN /R and press enter (Please note the
space between SHUTDOWN and the slash.)
So the next time you cannot shut your computer down the way you normally
do, you'll have another option besides powering off your computer.
If you have Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update), you can also
use Cortana to restart or shutdown your computer using voice commands.

You Talk; It TypesSpeechTexter: A Cloudeight Site Pick
A lot of people are amazed by dictation software. I know I am. I can
remember being in my grandpa’s office and looking at a really strange
machine and being Amazed. I was about 5 or 6. It was called a Dictaphone.
If you don’t know what a Dictaphone is, then you’re too young to
understand. They call them cassette recorders now. But Dictaphones were
odd-looking things. I was impressed with them when I was a child.
So, it is no wonder I’m impressed with digital speech to text software.
There’s a gazillion of them out there right now. But today I found one
that recognizes 40 languages. Since I speak only 1.1 languages — I can say
‘where is the beach” and “where is the bathroom” in Spanish — the 4o
language thing doesn’t make much difference to me. But some of you are
bilingual and some even multilingual. If you are, then this site should
appeal to you. And if you only speak one language, that’s cool too, as
long as the one you speak is one of the 40 today’s site pick / web
application recognizes. And there’s a really good chance, since you’re
reading this, that it does.
SpeechTexter is a web-app. It’s a speech-to-text application that will
take whatever you say into your computer microphone and automatically
convert it to text in an on-screen word processor. From there you
can copy and paste it into your text editor, word processor, email,
Website, Facebook page, etc.
SpeechTexter works with more than 40 different languages. I tried it
with my feeble attempts at Spanish and it worked great. Dónde está el
baño? Oh, and it gives me a choice of which country’s version of Spanish I
want to use. I speak Spanish Spanish (I think), but you can choose
whatever dialect of Spanish you speak. Or any of the other 39 languages it
recognizes. Oh, and if you speak English, like I kind of do, you can
choose from 13 different versions of English, including the U.S. version
of English, the English version of English, Australian version and so on.
One caveat: You’ll need to use the Chrome browser in order to use this
site. It may work in other Chrome variants like Chromium, Vivaldi. We
didn’t test it in these browser, but you can if you want to. One reader
says it works in Opera. So there you go Opera fans.
Give it a try right now. We’re pretty sure you’ll find it works great.
Visit
https://www.speechtexter.com/. You talk; it types.
Above: SpeechTexter understands my horrible Spanish.

My Boring Life – New Year’s Eve
If you like pointed hats, confetti, and cocktails, then I suggest you
not read any further; for I am the Ebenezer Scrooge of New Year’s Eve.
If there were such things as ghosts of New Year’s past, present and
future, they certainly would have haunted me by now.
I suppose it all began somewhere back in my childhood. Being subjected
to Lawrence Welk, Guy Lombardo or whoever it was that entertained the
masses on New Year’s Eve long ago, I’m certain set the stage for what
was to become a life-long dread of New Year’s Eve. Well, maybe “dread”
is the wrong word. Maybe I’m just jaded, but somehow watching zillions
of people watching a ball drop at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s
eve just seems a bit ridiculous. It makes me want to scream “Get a
life!” If you know what I mean. I’m sure all those New Yorkers who
hoot and kiss in Times Square on New Year’s Eve would chortle
uncontrollably if they ever spent a day living my boring life.
Walk a mile in my shoes, New Yorkers and you’d die of boredom… I’m
certain of it! No Orange Julius, no $340.00 dinners, no skyscrapers
(the highest building in my town is the courthouse which is about 93
feet tall), no “escort service”, no revolving doors, not a single
escalator and only one elevator in my little town. Plus, I might
actually say “Hi” to people I pass on the street – though don’t count
on it.
Awful, just awful, isn’t it? Can they even spell B O R I N G in New
York?
Keep in mind that I live in a rural area of Ohio, where a shopping
trip to Walmart is considered entertainment and eating dinner at KFC
or Burger King is considered a night out, especially if you have those
new dippers with the hot sauce at KFC – or the chicken fries at Burger
King. Talk about walking on the wild side. New York ain’t got nothing
on us!
The big local hangouts for those under thirty are the” BW3″ and “Bar
145” and I’m not kidding! For most of us small-town folk over thirty,
the sidewalks roll up at dark – and this time of year the it gets
REALLY REALLY DARK, REALLY EARLY. A “New Yorker” I’m not. But, you
know what? As boring as my life is, I like it and that’s all that
matters to me. I’m not made for revolving doors, hot dog carts, and
Orange Julius. I sure don’t have $15,000 to pay an Escort Service. The
only escort service we have in my little town is at the local car
repair shop. We don’t have those things here. I think the nearest
revolving door is in Cleveland – but I’m not sure they are there
anymore either since the downtown department stores have all gone
belly up and turned into Casinos. I don’t like hot dogs unless they
are connected with a baseball game ...

Uninstall programs in Windows 10 from the
Start Menu
We like Geek Uninstaller and Revo Uninstaller, but not all of you want to
bother with an uninstaller. Did you know that Windows 10 lets you
uninstall programs (and some Windows apps) right from the start menu? It
does.
Open your Windows 10 Start menu and right-click on
a program you want to install. You'll see a menu appear (see above) with:
> Pin to Start
> More
> Uninstall
All you need to do is click Uninstall to uninstall the program (or some
Windows apps). Sadly, it's not that easy but clicking "Uninstall" does
take you to Control Panel > Programs & features > Uninstall a program.
Once you get there you can uninstall any program you like, even the one
you right-clicked on.
It's quirky, but it does provide you with a really quick way of getting to
Control Panel to uninstall a program.
Keep in mind also, if the program you want to uninstall appears as a
folder in your start menu, you'll need to open the folder and right-click
the program shortcut, right-clicking the folder won't do any good, except
to give your finger a good workout.
Keep in mind, Microsoft is stubborn. There are some Windows apps that you
can't remove (at least not very easily). Microsoft decided it wants you to
have certain stuff, and by golly, you're going to have them.
