On Solving The Economic Crises - A Really New Deal

I am not a politician, thank goodness. I'm just your average, everyday citizen who's very concerned about his country and the economic situation we're in. This economic decline is unlike any I've seen in my lifetime --and I'm not a young man, I'm approaching middle-age. I've seen a lot. I've seen good economic times and bad economic times, but I've never seen times like these.

I've watched as friends who've worked for the same company for decades, lost their jobs ---and these friends didn't have golden parachutes. They're out there right now looking for work that pays better than minimum wage, but there's no work to be found. They might well have to become greeters at Walmart or flip burgers at McDonald's before too long. All that college for nothing.

I've got another friend who's a little bit older than I am and he's watching his retirement account shrink and if it persists, his retirement account, representing years of sacrifice and dedication will be worth next to nothing.

Everywhere I look there is something to remind me that something is not right. I no longer have to wait in line to eat at a favorite restaurant. A factory my town, that once employed over 1500, recently went bankrupt and shuttered its doors. However, the owners of the company still live nearby, cozy in their million-dollar homes, but those they left without jobs can't even afford to pay their mortgages on their $75,000 homes. They're out of work and apparently out of luck.

I'm not going to get into a partisan debate over whether the Republicans --whose ideas of economic recovery are to slash taxes, slash spending and increase freedom - or the Democrats -- who think we can spend our way to prosperity, are right.

However it seems to me that we just got through trying increased freedom (deregulation) and cutting taxes with the hope that all that money would trickle down from the rich to the poor. I think that's partly how we got into this mess in the first place. The money that was supposed to trickle down from the rich to the poor never trickled, instead it was spent on million-dollar offices, corporate jets and high-roller junkets, lavish vacations, $300 crystal glasses and who knows what else. Deregulation (i.e. "more freedom" didn't work because Wall Street, bankers and investment firms, unfettered by regulations, ran amok. Freedom only works if those who are free are also responsible. This reminds me of that old aphorism about free speech which says the right of free speech does not give you the right to yell "FIRE!" in a crowded theater.

The Democrats have another way of dealing with economic crises. They want to throw hundreds of billions of dollars at it and hope, somehow, that it all goes away. This has been tried too. FDR tried it in the 1930's and it worked for awhile but never did really pulled the U.S. completely out of the Great Depression. It took World War II to do that. Let's just hope our government doesn't resort to more wars to bail us out. It seems that we've got more wars going on than we know what to do with -- and war-mongering makes America look bad in the eyes of the rest of the world. World War II could hardly be avoided. Hitler was gobbling up Europe, killing millions of Jews, and Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Six days after Pearl Harbor, Adolf Hitler declared war on the United States. So, it wasn't like we went looking for war, it was forced upon us. I'm sure we can't say the same for the war in Iraq, although I'm sure there are some that would argue that it too was somehow forced upon us.

I'm a little worried about the economy. I'm very worried about my job. I'm even more worried that no one in our government has a clue how to fix this economy. It seems to me we're trying more of the same old ideas that have been tried before -- cutting taxes, tax rebates, huge government spending, and so forth. We're using all the things we've used before and none of these things have ever been very successful. Government hasn't tried anything really daring in six decades -- not since Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal". We can't even know how well the "New Deal" would have worked because four years after it was enacted, many parts of it were declared unconstitutional by a Conservative Supreme Court. Thus crippled, the "New Deal" mitigated, but never ended, the Great Depression of the 1930's.

Extraordinary problems call for bold, new, extraordinary solutions. Sadly, it appears, we are not going see anything new or extraordinary come out of Washington, no matter which party is in control. Everyone's too busy criticizing everyone else and promoting their own agendas to get anything done.

Big, bold, new ideas are what's needed. Stale Washington thinking seasoned with bickering and name-calling isn't the answer. I think an approach based in good common sense, one that diverges distinctly from the tired, old solutions of past, is what we need.

Here is my common sense economic stimulus plan:

1. Abolish the income tax and replace it with a 10% National Sales Tax (NST) on all retail sales except food and medicine. This would immediately start billions of dollars flowing into the economy because it would put billions of extra dollars into the hands of the people.

2. Abolish all federal withholding for Social Security and fund Social Security with part of the revenue from the NST plus revenues from a new "Stock Transaction Tax" (STT). The Stock Transaction Tax would levy a two or three cent tax on every stock transaction - buy and sell. There are billions of stock transactions each day. Stock traders now buy and sell without paying any tax. A few pennies per transaction wouldn't inhibit the trading of securities, but it would generate billions of dollars of additional governmental revenue. It would alternately free up billions of taxpayer dollars that would then flow directly into the American economy.

3. Immediately issue a $500 pre-paid government-issued debit card to each single taxpayer or a $1000 pre-paid government-issued debit card to each married taxpayer filing jointly. The debit card would be used like any bank-issued debit card. The greatest advantage to about this proposal is that the cards could only be used to buy things, not to pay down debt or put money in the bank. Another advantage to this plan is that the government would not have to pay out all of the money out at once. The money would be paid out only if the cards are used and only as the cards are used.

4. Start a weekly national lottery. The proceeds from this lottery would be used exclusively for education.

5. Add a 50 cent tax to each gallon of gasoline and use this revenue to fund the development of alternative fuels.

6. Form a commission to look into legalization of soft drugs (i.e. marijuana), prostitution, and gambling. The way I see it, people are going to engage in these activities anyway, so the government might as well earn tax dollars from them. It seems to me that hundreds of billions of dollars of potential revenue would be generated. Of course, church groups and morality groups would fight this idea big time, but the reality is people are people - always have been and always will be. There's always going to be vice and it's high time we come to grips with it. The huge amount of revenue generated from drugs, position and gambling would do a lot of good for society - and decrease the prison population which would also save money. Such a great idea, isn't it?

7. Make federal money available to states for infrastructure improvements, but make it available only after the states had first made the improvements. The federal government would guarantee the loans the states would need to improve existing infrastructure and replace decaying infrastructure. Once the infrastructure improvements and replacements are completed and reviewed by a special government agency, the government would make federal money available to partially reimburse the states for the infrastructure improvement. The advantages of doing it this way is that we're not throwing money at the states in the hopes that they use it to improve and replace infrastructure only to find it's been used to install new carpet in the governors' mansion or buy new jets and helicopters for the governor to fly around in -- or wasted in other equally creative ways.

I'm not a details kind of guy, but I think my ideas are good, common sense ideas that would stimulate the economy, create jobs, and get people working, borrowing, and buying things again. I'm not sure how many economists would agree with me but then look at the mess we're in - some economists somewhere must have help get us into this. Find ten different economists and you'll find ten different opinions on how to best deal with our economic mess. I would bet you'd not be able to find a single plan on which even 50% of all economists would agree, let alone all of them.

So, do we cut taxes and hope the money filters down from the rich to the poor? It didn't work before, why would it work now? Do we throw hundreds of billions at the problem and hope it goes away? We've tried that before and it didn't end The Great Depression, why would it work now?

The trouble is that government, whether it's Conservative-leaning or Liberal-leaning, will only dare to do things that have been done before. When it comes to Washington, there really is nothing new under the sun. We won't find the answer to our economic problems in that tired, old sack of Washington solutions. It's time to step away from how it's always been done and try something fresh and creative. It's time for big, bold ideas and for a brave new way of approaching our unprecedented economic problems.

YOU will "whine" as well when your bank account/retirement goes down the tubes and you have no income, when your home mortgage is foreclosed upon, when you are taxed beyond any ability to pay...oh, wait, dems don't pay taxes do they...anyway, when your eyes stop being dazzled by the b.s emanating from the throne of the "chosen one", you will be back here "whining with the rest of us.  By the way, did your congress man/woman read the spendulus bill before he blindly signed it?  Or did he/she just follow poopy Pelosi's orders and and go along with the crowd of lemmings?
As for TC's suggestions, any help at all would be welcomed, by us at least, but not by the "king". He will not listen to the common people, he is too far above all of that and he is letting you all know that.  If only TC did have the ear of his majesty, it might help. The fact he refused to listen to any REAL economists proves he thinks he and Pelosi know best and everyone else is out of step.  But, the dirty deed is done, and we are all going to suffer for it...except the idiots that made these horrible moves.

who can say what caused this decline in confidence , most certainly Obama is not helping using the fear factor and saying we are worse then any time in our history , I feel that the decline in spending is directly attributed to gasoline prices , simple you say , it is  that simple . Any time the normal people that make any where between20,000 to 50,000 see the cost of gas go so high they stop all unnesasary spending, to raise the price of gasoline is not a good way to go . what would help more than anything is if we financed at least 5 refiniries and allowed drilling off the coast, it certainly would instill some confidence in our economy and leave some room for the taxes also .  . It will never happen as the all knowing government has put into the present spending bill a little item that would stop off shore drilling and in other areas on our country . We do not have the technology to replace oil as a enegry source . and we need all of the oil we can get and work on the technology while we enjoy a better economy through lower gas price, and electricity. Can you imagine the effect that not using coal will have on just the state of Kentucky let alone all the western states that depend on that for their economies. they would become welfare states over night if  coal was outlawed . We all have ideas and some are good and some are not , our governemnt has got to the point where they do not listen to the people but depend on their so called intelligence and have made some very big blunders and this new deal is just another blunder . When we have known tax cheats running the IRS we also lose confidence in our officials . You have a good bunch of ideas but they tend to be to logical for our officials to comprehend . Have a great day

Your ideas are good, however the taxes you suggest are too high for us Seniors living only on SS in rural MT.  We worked all these years paying our bills and taxes.  Now we retire and count on the little SS income we get just to live on.  We have paid enough taxes in our life so far.  We in rural MT would be most affected by what you suggest.  We could not afford .50 tax on every gallon of gas.  We also prefer not having a Sales Tax.

You have to consider the 'poorer' states like MT.  Our high income in MT is CA & NY's low. Most farmers and ranchers in MT did not have the money or credit to begin with, so they did not 'party' like a lot of other states, or our Govt.  We live limited simple lifestyles.
The limited income we made in our State only gives us a small income on SS.  You must make exceptions for the low income people who are struggling already.

Please remember the HIGH cost of living in lovely CALIFORNIA. I "retired" in the last part of 2007. The place where I worked closed its doors - along with hundreds of other businesses in the county where we live (2 hours drive from the State Capital - where things are equally bad). My husband must drive 23 miles to work every day and adding .50 to every gallon of gas would add to our problems. Our governor's answer is to raise personal taxes, raise sales taxes, double the cost of vehicle registrations -- all things that must come out of our already minimized income -- and cut services. We may have to move to MT :)

Some of your ideas would perhaps work, however none of  us "common folk" out here will ever get the opportunity to present any ideas at all....even though we are supposed to be the "people" (government).  This is the biggest part of the problem. The country is run by the elite, wall street and the politicians.  That said, I guess it puts the problem back on those who are going to make the choices, whether we like them or not.  It would have been nice, and probably a lot more helpful if the politicians had heeded the advice of economists (the real ones, not the ones Obama and Pelosi claim agree with the current spendulus program), who have stated that if left alone, the economy will correct itself, and in the end it will already have started to correct BEFORE ANY spendulus funds hit the grid.  Is Obama or Pelosi or Reid listening? Nope, they want all that pork and fat they have been wanting to insert for decades and now is their chance since the "won" and there is not a damn thing any of us can do about it. ACORN is set to get multiple millions to continue their thievery and registrations of dead/criminal/non-existent voters in order to try to keep obama in for another term. Now THAT'S "change" we can believe in.  Oh well, in the end, no matter which egos win, we in the real world will pay the price, and so will our kids and grandkids.  Time for another "Tea Party" and if we could all decide for just one year to NOT pay ANY taxes, like the new cabinet members, then where would they get the money to SPEND?  What a concept! Just my opinion...don't shoot me.

Now they will push those through and declare how brilliant they are, while mr. clueless struts his stuff and tries to act presidential. How sad for this country that politicians only think about themselves while they talk the talk of power, while we at the bottom of the hill get the stuff that slides down it....we are all mushrooms for the next 4 years, and I doubt any new faces after that would do any better.  Would that the common man could sit on those thrones of power long enough to actually solve some problems without worrying about image and prestige....

But now big companies have ate up the small companies and there's not many choices. Don't know what the answer would be to get us out of this mess but TC had some good ideas.

Why wasn't there a  loud upcry when the country was taken off the gold standard and the Federal Reserve was put in place.  Whenever I've mentioned that we are losing our freedoms, the pat answer always is " Yes, you are right but we still live in the best country in the world." Or " Who has been brainwashing you?"" What happened in Germany or China, or Russia will never happen here. " There have been dozens of books published over the years warning us about the coming fall of our country and none of us paid any heed or we felt powerless to to stop it. The first inkling I had that something was going terribly wrong was when I started reading the novels by Taylor Caldwell. Then I read None Dare Call It treason. I agree with the rant and sure wish that we could turn this country around but I very much fear that it isn't going to happen. I try to do my part by signing petitions and getting in touch with my congressmen and senators and donating some money when I can. Our goverment if no longer of the people or for the people. This whole economic stimulas plan is a joke and nothing more than :pork barrell politics" as usual.
The trouble with this country now is it is just a bunch of sheep being lead to slaughter. Nobody will take the time to call their representatives and voice their opinions and change what is happening in Congress. Just complain about it all but do nothing. Pelosi flies back and forth from Cal. every week inn Air Force jet costing the taxpayers million a year but nobody says anything about her doing it. Stand up people and fight for what you want.
Cal. is in up-rising right now over Gov. cut back on work time, so we need to follow their example and do the same toward Washington and the outlaws living there. The people need to take back control of the Gov. and ship all of them home inorder to see where the country is going. Strip away their salaries and retirement and see how fast things change, wish I could vote my own pay raises in and different goldden retirement plans, I sit back and enjoy too but sadly not able to do it. We need to go back to before Kennedy and change the standard of our money back to Gold and get rid of the private organization printing our conterfit money right now.
The constitution plainly states that no one can print or distribute money except the "TRESUARY", what is so hard about that statement to understand. Nothing in my eyes but Washington can't seem to get it.
We need "CHANGE" but not the kind we have  now, it has to come from the rank and file not the top.

By the way, when are you going to go back to school and learn to spell? You are proving your lack of that ability every time you post.

Can they possibly teach you what you English skills that you would have learned in grade school? The fact you cannot express yourself properly tells us that you are lying about your "masters" (you do need a high school diploma to get into college, you know)..even blacks have to qualify on that score, not on their skin color. Try getting a decent education, then you may have something to be proud about. You sure can't be proud of that puppet you elected.

I listen and read all this stuff about how the stimulus package is going to solve the problems and this is the change that Obama promised the American people , the ones that believed it anyway . Well as I see it theres nothing more than what Bush has already done and they were down on him for this but they are doing the same exact thing . How come there is not one in congress that has the guts to say , you know , before NAFTA we never had these problems , hmmmmm can this be the reason millions are unemployed and more being so every day ? Well Duhhhhhhhh ,,,, when they allowed all the companies to leave here for other countries and put all our workers out of a job , there's nothing the economy can do but fail . How stupid are these idiots we have elected anyway ?? Well they are not stupid , the Democrat party have it going just the way they want it , they have always wanted full control as in a communist state and they are getting it . With everyone umemployed and the economy failed , they become the suppreme power and everyone depends on them for everything and we as a nation another third world country . Obama does not know what he's doing except following orders from the Democrat Party. I am truly amazed that so many people have been snowballed by this and unless and until we as a people rise up and say enough and elect people that have common sense and not millionairs or libraral lawyers , we will never see change except for the worse and yes there is worse , and we are headed there if we dont stand up ... Lets take our country back where we the people run it and not corrupt , non tax paying politicians ,,,,,         Thnaks ,,,, mr_bo

This mess started with the Democrats took over congress a little over two years ago. Bush had no power during his last two years. This spending spree bill is going to lead us to the worst inflation and highest interest rates ever.

Do you realize the amount of money given the financial institutions was sufficient to pay off ALL outstanding mortgages they held? Now THAT would be a way of putting money back into the economy. Pay it ALL off and let the people put the saved cash back into the economy by themselves.  (Joking but it was amazing to see all that cash go for naught.) So, they get all this money but there's a cap on BONUSES?!?!?!? Bonuses should be abolished, period.

Letters, e-mails, phone calls to your elected officials do make a difference.  We also desperately need term limits and line item veto.  Fewer members of the House with longer terms would make a huge difference, too.  We get by with only two Senators per state, why not limit the House to four per state.  Having the House based on population gives many states far too much advantage.

This is not a place to post your Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Keith Olbermann, et. al. vitriol. Keep your comments intelligent and polite PLEASE?

Some of you sound like parrots repeating right-wing or left-wing hate mongers. They make millions stirring up hatred - you make nothing here by doing that but enemies. Think for yourselves.  A lot of what I see here I could hear between 12 and 3PM on the Rush Limbuagh comedy hour or between 8PM and 9PM on the Keith Olbermann let's hate Republicans hour.

No wonder our country is in such a mess. It took G.W. Bush and camarilla 8 years to screw things up, at least give Obama eight months? Huh?

If the first couple of weeks is any example of how obama is going to rule, then it pretty well tells us what is ahead. As long as Pelosi pulls the strings, he will continue to screw up. She obviously hopes to get into his office one way or another, so she will exert power and influence no matter who gets hurt.  For now, it is you and I who are going to feel the pain of her greed for power. Is obama smart enough to wake up in time and put her in her place?  We can only hope and wonder.

Personally, I don't listen to the people you listed in your post...do you?  Most of us have our own opinions, our own brain to think with and our own sense of outrage at what we see unfolding in recent days.  It's downright scary and the president keeps trying to scare us more.  I, for one, wonder what his aim is?

I agree with most of the suggestions. However, there is little common sense in Washington. It would be great if Obama and the other "leadership" in Washington got hold of these suggestions and followed through with them but I don't believe they would. The suggestions make too much sense and they all have their own agendas without regard to the American people.
