Removing Arrows From Windows Shortcut Icons
(Windows XP Home and Professional Editions )

There are two ways to do this. You can do it the long, hard way, by editing the registry or the simple way by using a free program from Microsoft called "Tweak UI". Whenever there's a choice between a simple way to do something or editing the Windows Registry, choose the easy way. Not only will you save time, but if you make a mistake editing the Registry, you could cause a lot of problems. So keep It simple whenever possible!

Since you're using Windows XP, you can download Tweak UI for Windows XP from Microsoft's Power Toys Page. Once you've downloaded it, run it and click the "+" next to Explorer (on the menu on the left side of Tweak UI) to expand the Explorer sub-menu. Choose "Shortcut" to open the Shortcut dialog. Tick the circle next to "None" and click "OK".  Here's a screen shot.

Windows 98, ME, NT, and 2000 users can download Tweak UI for their versions of Windows too. The process for removing the arrows from shortcut icons is very similar to the process above. Windows 98/ME/NT/2000 users can download Tweak UI for their versions of Windows from this link. Once you've installed Tweak UI, open it and click the "Explorer" tab at the top. Tick the circle that says "None" then click "Apply" and "OK". Here's a screen shot for you!
