Richard says his computer stutters
and we give him our best advice
1. I will follow up on your suggestion to look at Task
Manager/performance to see which item may be hogging more than it
should.
2. The STARTUP trimming is a good suggestion which I have done, but
like family values, one seems to keep more than one should. Guilty
here, as charged. I am trimming more ...to the bone.
After doing #1, and #2, I will see if I run into the issue of slow
response again...I am optimistic your advice is on target.
What would be an appropriate donation for your help, advice, and
work? I have to tell you, whenever I ask for donations on my site,
or my newsletter, the response is dismal even when I ask for less
than the cost of a small cup of coffee....I think people don't
appreciate the work that goes on behind the scenes in your work and
mine. But I respect your work and feel you deserve an appropriate
donation.
Thank you. Please get back to me once more. And you better tell me
how to donate. Thanks, Richard.
Our answer
Hi Richard. If the suggestions I gave you don't work, then you
probably have a Windows corruption issue in which case you'll
need to consider doing a Windows reset & keep personal files and
folders.
You should be able to look in Task Manager/Processes and order
the processes from those that use the most resources to those
that use the least:
a.) Memory (RAM)
b.) CPU (Processor)
c.) Disk (Activity)
High disk activity can be just as impactful as high memory or
high CPU usage. if you see a process using 80 or 90% or more of
CPU/RAM/DISK, right-click on the process and click "END TASK".
We help people free of charge and don't expect donations. Those
who want to donate because we took the time to help them can
donate whatever they want. The smallest listed donation is $5.
But we don't expect donations every time we answer a question or
provide a tutorial or work, via multiple emails to help
someone. If everyone donated that we help (50 to 100 a week or
more) we'd be in a lot better financial shape. So we provide the
same help to everyone - and that is always our best help. If you
want to donate, you can do so
from our donation page here.
I hope this helps you find the culprit causing the problems with
your PC.
Thanks for your support & your nice comments.
Kay wants to know when
Microsoft add Outlook for Windows in 2024 if it will affect
her MS Outlook email program
Will my Outlook program from my Office program be affected
by Outlook for Windows in 2024? Or, will I still be able to
use my Outlook program as is?
Our answer
Hi Kay. No the Windows mail app changing to Outlook for
Windows will not affect those using the MS 365 (Microsoft
Office) version of Outlook. Those not familiar with this
upcoming change can
read more about it here. We hope this helps you, Kay.
Sandy has concerns about Windows 11 and compatibility with
her software
Have you written any articles on things to think about before you
upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11? I haven't been interested in
making the change but figure I will need to do eventually. I have a
few old software programs I use such as Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe
and Vehicle Manager that I want to ensure will run on Windows 11 and
any other things I need to consider before making the change. What
type of settings automatically transfer? Thank you for your help!
Our answer
I don't know what Vehicle Manager is and I can't find out much
about it. My best advice is to check with the company that makes
(or made it).
We wrote this article some time ago, but it still holds
true. There's still no compelling reason to upgrade to Windows
11 before Windows 10's end-of-life date on October 14, 2025 -
which is still almost two years away. You won't get Auto-pilot
on Windows 10 but that's not a great loss. There are many other
useful features that Windows 11 has that Windows 10 doesn't at
least none that make it nearly imperative to make the switch.
Some of your Windows 10 settings will be moved to Windows 11,
while others will not.
But, keep this in mind: You still have almost two years to use
Windows 10, and in my opinion, there is no compelling reason to
update to Windows 11 right now.
We hope this helps you make a good decision, Sandy.

Jim says his Dell PC with Windows
10 won't wake up from Sleep Our answer Right-click on the Start button, click on "Power options" and set "Sleep" to never (when plugged in - if using a laptop) and set "Turn off my screen" to "After 10 minutes" (when plugged in if using a laptop). When you set up your computer that way, the screen goes dark after 10 minutes, and the computer idles but does not sleep. When you're ready to use your computer again just touch a key or move the mouse (or touch the touchpad). It will use slightly more electricity this way - but the screen is what uses up most of the power and when it dims after 10 minutes it will be the same as if you chose sleep mode. Another way to fix sleep mode (the only sure way) is by doing a Windows reset while keeping your files). However, that's a time-consuming option when it's much easier just to stop using Sleep mode at all. If you're using a desktop it may not be a Windows issue at all, it may be an issue with your monitor. If the suggestions above don't help, consider testing your PC with a different monitor. If you don't have another monitor, you can use your flat-screen TV as a monitor - all you need is an HDMI cable to connect your computer to the TV. We hope this helps you, Jim.
Janice can receive emails but
cannot send emails
I can receive email but can not send it. Can you help me? Our answer
Hi Janice. Your problem is not your computer or email program,
it's your email provider. Ever since Charter bought out
Time-Warner (Roadrunner) and became Spectrum, most of those with
rr.com email addresses have had problems. I am one of those who
had Roadrunner and a rr.com address and I got fed up with the
email problems and now I use Gmail and Outlook.com.
I suggest you switch to a Gmail or Outlook/Hotmail.com address -
otherwise, there is a good chance you'll keep having email
problems. If you don't want to get a Gmail account your only
other option is to reach out to Spectrum and ask them to help
you with your SMTP settings (the settings that "Send" email).
You can get a free Gmail account at https://www.gmail.com or
a free Hotmail/Outlook.com email account at https://www.outlook.com/.
I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you, but since this
is a Spectrum (RR) email server problem and not a computer
problem, the best I can do is give you my best advice, and hope
it helps you.
Virginia asks us to check out a website Can either of you tell me if this is a legitimate website? info@ourdefenseofamerica.com They sent me a sample of their news publication called "The Flyover", offering free deliveries of their news gatherings. Thanks as always for your help! Our answer Hi Virginia. Thanks. info@ourdefenseofamerica.com is not a website it's an email address. There is no correlating website to defenseofamerica.com - if you try to visit www.ourdefenseofamerica.com you end up on https://www.bestamericanow.com/ which is an unfinished site with an American flag and animated clouds floating around and a privacy policy link that does not work. Either the site is under construction or was never finished. If I were you I'd be skeptical as something doesn't seem right. The redirect is mysterious. That's all I can tell you, Virginia.
How to Use SFC and DISM to Repair Windows We’ve covered how to use SFC (System File Checker) to check your Windows PC for missing or corrupted Windows System Files several times before. But today, we’re going to take it one step further. We’re going to show you how to use SFC and DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) one after the other, to repair or replace corrupted, damaged or missing Windows System Files that may be causing problems with your computer or with Windows updates. We’ll start by running SFC (System File Checker) to check Windows System Files. How to Run System File Checker (SFC) Open an administrator Command Prompt. Press Windows Key + X then click on “Command Prompt (Admin)” – or type CMD in Taskbar search, right-click on CMD when it appears at the top, and choose “Run as administrator”. At the prompt type SFC /SCANNOW and press Enter. Note the space after SFC. It will take some time to scan your system. In most cases, it will take between 5 and 15 minutes.
If SFC does not find any errors and says it found no corrupt files, or if it found some and fixed them all, or if you get a message that: “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them”. You’re not done. You have more to do. Running DISM is an important second step in the process of replacing missing, corrupted or damaged Windows system files. Before you proceed to the next step, you should restart your computer. After you’ve restarted your computer, continue as follows... Repair Windows System Files Using DISM It is a good idea to run System File Checker (SFC) before running DISM. If you think your computer has a problem and SFC tells you that it found no integrity violations or even if it finds corrupted files and repairs them, you should still run DISM to double-check. If you get the message that “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them”, you should use the DISM tool to repair any damaged files that might be preventing SFC from working correctly. How to Run DISM. 1. Type CMD in the Taskbar search 2. Right-click on Command Prompt when it appears in the search results and choose “Run as administrator”. 3. At the Command Prompt type this (exactly): DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press "Enter"...
Make sure you type the command exactly as shown with the spaces as shown. 4. DISM will check your PC’s system files for corruption or damage and automatically fix any problems that it finds.
DISM generally takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete. But you may notice that at some points DISM may appear to be frozen and not running. Be patient and let DISM run and finish its work. If you interrupt it, it won’t repair anything, and you’ll have to start all over. When it is done, you'll see a message that "The operation completed successfully." After DISM has finished running, restart your computer. Keep in mind that you may have to run SFC and DISM more than once.
The Windows Mail App Will Become
Outlook for Windows in 2024 Microsoft in their inexplicable habit of re-using names will cause more confusion next year (2024) when the Windows Mail app (which is nothing like Windows Mail which was included in Windows XP & Windows Vista). becomes Outlook or officially “Outlook for Windows”. The Windows Mail app comes pre-installed on all versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. Unfortunately, as of now, Windows 10 users, it seems, won’t be “upgraded” to the new Outlook for Windows. But this Outlook is not the Outlook you’re thinking of – the one that comes with Microsoft 365 (formerly Microsoft Office). This Outlook is free. Confused yet? Well wait till you see the “new” “free” Outlook email program – it looks like the Outlook that comes with Microsoft Office, hmm I mean Microsoft 365.
If you are using the Windows Mail app and you can’t wait until next year when you’ll be (without any options) transitioned to the new “free” Outlook, all you have to do is open the Windows Mail app and toggle on the switch next to “New Outlook” in the upper right corner. After a few minor typical Microsoft distractions will get a working preview of the new “free” Outlook. And if you don’t like it, you can turn the switch off to go back to the Windows Mail app… at least until you are forcibly transitioned to Outlook for Windows in 2024. So all of you who didn’t want to pay for MS Office (MS 365) will be able to use a very close replica of Outlook for free. And if you’re one of those who are using an MS Office alternate like Open Office or Libre Office (neither of which come with an email program) and you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11, you’ll be delighted to know that one of the only things missing from your free MS Office replacement – Outlook – will be at your fingertips soon – or whenever you’re ready to try it. The last time Microsoft did this with Outlook they called it Outlook Express. At least they added a qualifier to the name so people could tell the difference. just by the name. Outlook Express became significantly more popular than its parent. Outlook Express was a simplified version of Outlook, and as it turned out, that’s what most people wanted. Soon, the real Outlook will (so they say) be able to answer your emails for you using AI. According to Microsoft, those using the free Outlook for Windows will be getting AI-assisted mail answering too! Won’t that be fun? Anyway, enough of our commentary. We’re going to let Microsoft tell you more about the “free” Outlook coming in 2024.
So it seems big changes are coming in 2024 to the Windows mail app in Windows 11 - it seems you're going to be getting MS Outlook for free.
Get Notified When Someone Searches for You Online Get an email alert anytime anyone uses Google to search for you online
Google has a feature called Results About You that alerts you when your personal information gets posted online. This feature uses Google Search to scan the web for your name, address, phone number, email address, and other personal information. When it finds your information on a website, it sends you an email alert. You can pair the Results About You feature with the Remove Your Result tool to make it difficult for people to find your personal information online. The Remove Your Result tool allows you to request that Google remove links to specific websites from its search results. To use the Results About You feature, you need to have a Google Account. Once you have a Google Account, you can go to the Results About You website and sign in. The “Results About You” dashboard will send notifications every time new results appear. In a time when the personal and financial data of billions of people is floating around online, ripe for exploitation by data brokers, privacy has become a major concern. Google acknowledged this issue when it launched the Results About You tool. It’s important to note that Google cannot remove all personal information from the web. However, the Results About You feature and the Remove Your Result tool can help you to make your personal information more difficult to find online. Here are some tips for using the Results About You feature and the Remove Your Result tool:
When you visit Google’s Results About You website, you’ll find it’s easy to use You can get a good idea of what to expect when you visit the Results About You website from the screenshots below. These screenshots were taken after logging in to my Google account.
Fill in the forms and get notified when someone searches Google for you Be sure that you fill in all information correctly on the Google Results About You website. When you’ve completed filling out the forms, you’ll be notified by email anytime someone searches for you online using Google. Important note: Google’s “Results About You” tool is currently available only in the United States. However, Google has announced plans to roll it out to more countries in the future.
