Patty wants to know if hackers can
watch you with your own Webcam. Our answer It's not likely to happen if a user has good antivirus / antimalware installed. However, no software is 100% foolproof. We've written articles about this before and when you're not using your webcam, we recommend putting a tiny piece of electrician's tape (opaque) over the camera lens. If you're concerned about the tape's sticky substance harming your lens you can put a small piece of paper between the tape and the lens. This is not something that happens very often. But it's important to know it's not a hoax and it probably happens more than we like to think. And remember to always make sure you're protected. While the chance of someone spying on you using your webcam is possible, it's not very likely. But still, it just makes good sense to understand the risks and always use the best safe computing practices. Covering the lens is a good option, but having a good antimalware/antivirus like Emsisoft installed is imperative.
Carol can't
download a YouTube video Our answer
I've been testing a different way to download
YouTube videos that (as of today) still works and is
quick, easy, painless, and allows you to download
YouTube videos in different qualities, for me, 1080p
HD is fine.
Here's how I do it...
1. Go to https://y2mate.com and
paste the URL (web address) of the YouTube video you
want to download.
As you can see from the screenshot above you can
download the video in MP4 format in several
different qualities including 1089p (HD) or 1440p
which is more than 1080p (1920 x 1080) but less than
4K. They also offer other download formats. Simply
click the green download button and you'll see this
popup...
Just click on the green download button on that
popup to download the YouTube video to your
computer.
Once the download has been completed, you can play
the video on your computer. I use VLC Media Player
on my PC and the video I downloaded played
perfectly. It also played well in Microsoft
Clipchamp and Windows Media Player.
I tested this method again today (8 November 2023)
by downloading The Beatles Official Music Video of
"Now and Then" and it still works perfectly - at
least for me.
I hope this helps you, Carol.
Grace has used MS Outlook for years but hates the new
Outlook
I have used Outlook e-mail for years and liked it. But the new
version is terrible. I think I will change to Gmail.
Our answer
You are not being forced to use the new Outlook ( Windows
Mail app). It's a choice you made. You can turn the switch
off at the top right corner of "the new Outlook" and go back
to using the Windows Mail app as it was.
You won't be forced to use the new Outlook until sometime in
2024 and only if you're using Windows 11.
Also, you can use Gmail in all mail programs including the
Mail App and Outlook. You can also use your Outlook.com
email address in almost all other email programs like
OE Classic.
I hope this helps you, Grace.
Richard wants to know if he's
wasting money
Hi folks...as always, your notifications are filled with valuable information....but I have an unnecessary expense question. Am I wasting money subscribing to Zemana Antimalware while being a subscriber to Emsisoft?
Our answer
Hi Richard. Even though it costs $19.95 per year, Zemana Antimalware does NOT include any real-time protection at all and is not even a rated malware scanner/remover. In my opinion, you're wasting your money. Not only is Zemana not tested by any major antivirus testing lab like AV-Comparatives, AV-Test, or Virus Bulletin, which test legit AV programs like Emsisoft, Trend Micro, and others, but it does not even provide real-time scanning like Emsisoft and other major AV software. In my opinion, your $19.95 would be better off kept in your pocket than spending it on Zemana. Paying for Zemana is a waste of money. Hope this helps you make a good choice.

This is a worldwide voluntary organization to cater to seniors over 55. I am President of the local branch and we have 300 members in our village of Havelock North in NZ. Pop 15,000. My website is www.u3ahavelocknorth.com. I wanted a refurbished computer for my secretary and saw this advertised by a company who refurbishes computers from large organizations and when they buy the latest ones and replace the old ones. This is the one I bought: Processor: Intel 7th Generation Intel Core Intel® Core™ i5-7300U
Processor 3M Cache, up to 3.50 GHz However, when it arrived it had Windows 11 installed. I contacted them as I wanted Windows 10 as advertised. They sent me a flash drive and when I loaded it on the new laptop I was able to remove Windows 11 and replace it with Windows 10 which I have since updated and then installed my preferred software. I was surprised it was so easy. Is it common to do this and can all Windows 11 users do this? Best Wishes and regards, Norris. Our answer

The Quick & Easy
Way to Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives
By default, Windows hides certain files, folders, and drives. But often, the Windows tips we write and others you find online assume you can view hidden files, folders, and drives. Some files and folders in Windows are automatically marked as hidden because Windows doesn’t want you messing around with them. But, leaving them hidden hinders your ability to make changes that can enhance your Windows experience. As we’ve mentioned, many of our tips and tricks and others you find online assume you can view hidden files. For example, if you need to access the AppData folder in your users’ directory, you must unhide hidden files, folders, and drives. We think it’s a good idea that you be able to see all files, folders, and drives on your computer, and here’s an easy way to do it. Windows 10 1.) Open File Explorer (Windows key + E is a great shortcut). 2.) Click on the “View” tab at the top. 3.) Tick the box next to “Hidden items”.
4.) Close File Explorer. Windows 11 1.) Open File Explorer (Windows key + E ). 2.) Click on the “View” tab at the top.
3.) Tick on “Show” in the drop-down menu. 4.) Click on “Hidden items”. 5.) Close File Explorer. That’s it! From now on, you will be able to see all your files, folders, and drives including the ones that Windows was previously hiding from you.
All About the Cloud
Download Recovery Option
The cloud download option will reinstall the same build, version, and edition, that is currently installed on your device. This cloud download option is available on all Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. Using the Cloud Download option to reset your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC Here’s how to your the Cloud Download option to reset your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC…and keep all your files and folders (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Desktop, etc.). All the programs you installed will be removed. 1.) Type RESET in the taskbar search
Click on “Reset this PC” when it appears in the search results In the Recovery dialog, click Get Started under “Reset this PC”
When you click “Get Started” (Windows 10) or “Reset this PC” (Windows 11), a window will open that gives you two options: “Keep my files” and “Remove everything”
If you want to keep your files and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows make sure you select “Keep my files”. Choosing this option means Windows will be reinstalled but your files and folders will be retained. Any programs you installed, however, will be removed and you’ll need to reinstall them after the reset has completed. When you click on “Keep my files” you’ll see this dialog:
On the next screen, Windows will give you two options – “Cloud download” and “Local Reinstall”. If you choose “Cloud download”, Windows will download and install a pristine copy of the same version of Windows that is installed on your PC by downloading all necessary files directly from Microsoft’s servers. (If you choose the second option, Windows will be reinstalled using the files already stored on your computer.)
Click “Reset” and the reset will begin. Keep in mind that the Cloud download option will take longer than a local reinstall. A Cloud Recovery reset could take from 1 to 3 hours or even longer, depending on the speed of your internet connection. If you need to reset your computer, the Cloud download option is the best choice if your Windows installation is badly corrupted.

A Copy & Paste Tip How do you copy? Do you copy text and links from right or left or left to right? Did you know if you copy text from left to right, Windows automatically adds a space at the beginning when you paste it? While that's not a problem most of the time if you're copying and pasting passwords, user names, a line of code, a registry entry, etc., that extra space at the beginning can cause problems. So, try to get used to copying from right to left and you'll avoid having the extra space at the beginning of the line that Windows adds automatically. Do you copy, EB? Yep! Copy that!
