Peg wants to know if we would explain Bluetooth and wireless
technology
Can you please run an article explaining Bluetooth and wireless
routers for us newbies? I am thinking of buying a laptop. Thank you for
the info on buying a new computer.
Our answer
Bluetooth is a wireless technology that is more associated with cell
phones than with computers. Bluetooth allows you to attach devices to
cell phones, computers, iPods, etc. without wires. For instance, we both
have Bluetooth headsets for our cell phones. It allows you to talk and
make calls without having to touch the cell phone itself. As long as the
phone is within 30 feet of the cell phone and the Bluetooth headset is
turned on, the connection is maintained. There's no wires connecting the
headset to phone - it's wireless. You can walk around and talk and use
your hands for other things, like putting Christmas cookies in your
mouth, or wrapping gifts for TC & EB!
In order to use a Bluetooth device it must be "paired" with a Bluetooth
enabled device. You can buy Bluetooth enabled keyboards, mice, headsets,
printers, cams and Internet phones for your computer - as long as your
computer is Bluetooth enabled or capable. Even if your computer is not
Bluetooth capable you can make it so by buying a Bluetooth adapter. Our
experience with Bluetooth is only with our cell phones so far, but our
experience with it has been superb. We can't imagine walking around
holding a cell phone up to our ear anymore. From the feedback we heard,
Bluetooth devices for computers are equally excellent.
A wireless router is a router that you connect to your cable or DSL
modem that takes the modem's wired internet signal and converts it to a
wireless signal so that you can connect to the Internet with any
computer or laptop that has a wireless card or wireless USB adapter this
is within range of the router. The range of most current wireless
routers is between 300-500 feet. Most of our houses are not 300 - 500
feet long, wide, or high (except EB's) and that means you can use your
wireless laptop or desktop computer (with a wireless card or USB
wireless adapter) anywhere in your house without cables or wires.
Most all wireless routers also have four inputs so that you can connect
a computer near the router by a network cable too. Now you maybe
thinking -wait, the Bluetooth lets you connect wirelessly and so does a
wireless router - what's the difference?

Reimage
-
Before you call a computer repair tech
or spend several hundred dollars - consider Reimage! In an era when
big companies like Best Buy's Geek Squad spend millions and millions
of dollars extolling the virtues(?) of its sundry services, many folks
with broken computers will simply pick up the phone and call Geek Squad
or another heavily-advertised computer repair service. It's not until
the repair is finished that the computer owner realizes how Geek Squad
can afford all those cute(?) Volkswagens and that multi-gazillion-dollar
ad budget. The shock is the bill - if you have your computer repaired
in your home it will cost $299.95 - if you lug it into a Best Buy near
you, you'll pay $199.95. And what do you get for that much money?
If
your computer isn't running well and is in need of repair - READ THIS
before you call Geek Squad or someone else!
