Freeware Pick of the Week

FileLocator Lite 2010
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
What is it? It's a free, Windows desktop search tool
File size - approx 3MB (depending on the version)

EB drives me totally insane. She'll get a mad at me for not answering her emails, but I have answered her, really! And she's the kind that will badger you until she gets the results she desires. One time she wanted some Ohio strawberries, because they are better than the ones they have in Michigan. This is not surprising, everything in Ohio is better than Michigan. Have you ever heard of a Michigan tomato? I sent her the strawberries, FedEx, and she signed for them. A couple days late, she wrote me an email asking where the heck her Ohio strawberries were. I wrote back and said something like "you know where they are, they are in your stomach." For the next three days I got email from her - WHY DON'T YOU ANSWER ME! Of course, I had answered her, but she relies on Windows search (she's in love with Bill Gates, but I bet HE never sends her strawberries.) Windows search, of course, leaves a lot to be desired. Obviously. My strawberry email is missing to this day - EB will claim I never answered her mail - and that I never sent her the Ohio strawberries - REALLY!

What she needs, what we all need is a sleek, silent, symbiotic, scintillating, super-fast, desktop search program that actually FINDS what you're looking for, and finds it fast. So for you and for EB (who's still claiming those succulent, savory, Ohio strawberries never arrive, and that I never answered her now infamous "WHERE ARE MY STRAWBERRIES?" email), I have found a light, lightning fast, desktop search which used to have the unfortunate moniker of Agent Ransack, which sounds like someone who lives in Michigan and might have stolen those strawberries which I did, really, send to EB. I often feel sorry for her being stuck up there in the land of rust and ruin. So why wouldn't I have sent those strawberries? I'm a really soft-hearted Ohioan.

Anyway...

Widows XP's and Windows Vista search feature isn't so hot. In fact, it's downright aggravating to use. It consumes huge amounts of your computer's resources, sometimes to the point of causing problems with running programs - and making your computer run like a bogged-down marsh turtle. Windows 7's search feature is faster, and better, but it still consumes an inordinate amount of your computer's precious resources.

An expert computer user will keep his or her computer resources available as much as possible. Why? Because you can never have enough money or resources. You'd rather have resources available so you can do what you want when you want. But on XP and Vista if you're searching for a file, sometimes you can't really do much else while the search is running - well you can but your computer will seem sluggish. On Windows 7, there's a little less drag and it's faster but it's still not the best.

All of us from time to time need to find a certain file - or files - that we need to locate and can't remember where the heck we put them. You can use Windows search and suffer through the slow, resource-hogging process. And still Windows search may find nothing. So you've wasted time and resources on -- nothing.

There's a good freeware search for Windows called Everything, and it's the fastest Windows search we've found. But Everything's one lacking feature is that it cannot look inside of other file. That's why we've picked FileLocater Lite over Everything for this week's freeware program pick. If you want to find something inside a PDF files and Office files, and important feature if you're looking to search everything - which sometimes you have to do to find what you're looking for.

FileLocator Lite 2010 is very easy on resources - in fact you can carry on with your normal activities and you'll not even notice it is running in the background.

FileLocator Lite 2010 is exactly the same program as Agent Ransack with a different name. We chose this version because the name is more descriptive and we felt better about something named FileLocater than Agent Ransack - but they're exactly the same program. Really they are.

It's time to bring in the developer and let him tell you about his program.
