Dotty needs a Fax service
Once again I need your reliable advice. After putting our home-based business to rest we no longer have a fax and really didn't see a need for one...until now. Can you recommend a trusted free fax from my computer? I have found, iFax, and CocoFax that do not charge. Have you heard of them? As always, I have learned to go to the best for advice before jumping into something. Thank you and have a blessed day.
Our answer
Hi Dotty. I had to do some digging & research for you since I
don't ever use fax services. I'm not a Fax expert. I looked at
Cocofax, and it seems OK but it's not free.
See this page.
iFax does offer five free pages per month.
I did some research and shopped around for you and here are
three that I found that are secure and trustworthy. All of them
offer free or low-cost faxing.
I hope this helps you make a good choice, Dotty. And thank you
for your long-time support!
I have difficulty with my laptop connecting to the internet. If a
USB wifi adaptor bypasses my laptop wireless adapter and connects
automatically I need to get one. But I have no idea which one to
purchase -- a 2.4 USB, 3. USB -- 600- Mbps - 12 or 1500 Mbps?--------- Dotty wrote back..."Thank you for all your help. You are always there to help. I chose to go with FaxBurner. I'll give it a try. Thanks again... Dotty" Patsy needs a USB Wi-Fi adapter but doesn't know which one to get All that tells me nothing. My laptop (HP Elite Windows 10) is an older one and I have no idea what I should get that would be strong enough to get me on the internet when I start the computer. I'm tired of having to go to the Internet access site and work it until it connects. If it says connected, the laptop is not on the internet. If it says disconnected, the laptop is on the internet. What do I need to look for in a USB Wi-Fi adapter? Our answer
So, to make things easy for you, I've done some shopping for you.
Here's a plug-and-play USB Wi-Fi adapter for Windows 10 or
Windows 11 for less than $10 from Amazon. It's rated 4 stars
by 1600+ purchasers. All you have to do is plug it into a USB
port on your computer. You'll see it will ask if you want to run
the software installer setup and once you do that you'll see
your internet connection as WiFi2. It's really simple and really
inexpensive. It will provide you with speeds up to 300 Mbps - if
your provider offers speeds that fast.
We hope this helps you, Patsy.

Marty wants to know the best
way to uninstall (remove) a printer My question is: what is “the best way” to uninstall a printer? I know from Googling it, that there are several ways, but some are more thorough and work better. I recently had to remove a printer that I purchased but was unhappy with and needed to return - and I started with “settings”>” printers and scanners” and ended up choosing “remove” when I selected it. When I restarted my PC, it reappeared again and I had to take a different route, first by removing some software it had installed along with the drivers for the printer. I bought another printer but am gun-shy now, and wanted your advice on how best to remove it should I need to. Please feel free to streamline my question should you decide to post it in the Saturday Q&A newsletter. Thanks for all your help down through the years, you’re “the best of the best”. -Marty Our answer
The correct way to uninstall a printer is the way you did it.
Settings >Printers & scanners> click on the printer and select
remove. You can then remove the printer driver(s) this way.
Open the Printers and Scanners page in Settings.
Scroll down and click the Print Server properties link. Click on the "Drivers" tap at the top.
Click on the printer you want to remove the driver(s) for and click
the "Remove" button at the bottom.
You'll get a warning message that removing the driver will prevent
the device from working -which is OK since you've uninstalled it
anyway.
In the next dialog "Remove Driver And Package" make sure "Remove
driver and driver package" is selected, then click "OK".
When this has been completed, immediately restart your computer.
After you've restarted check to see if the printer you uninstalled
is still there... it should not be.
We hope this helps you, Marty.
---------- Marty wrote back..."Thank you so much, TC!!! - and thank you for your kind words about my dad, that meant a lot. My screen layout may be slightly different than yours (I’m running Win10 V 22H2) and instead of “scrolling down” on the Printers & scanners page, I found the link for “Print server properties” off to the right side under “Related settings” - but everything else was just as your instructions and screenshots said. Again, thank you so much for such a speedy reply. You’ve taken a weight off my mind, one less thing to worry about. You truly mean a lot to all of us. Have a blessed day. Marty."

Stanley disagrees with our
opinion of CCleaner Our answer
We're not the only ones who don't think highly of CCleaner.
And there are many others. But, it's your PC, you can use whatever
you like. We'll still warn users away from CCleaner. So, Stanley, we
respectfully disagree with you, but we appreciate you expressing
your opinion.
Carolyn wants her computer
cleaned up and her emails recovered Our answer
Cleaning up your computer won't fix your email problems, but the
answer to your first question is yes, we can clean up your computer,
with the caveat that cleaning up your computer won't affect your
email.
Let's see what we can do with the information we have from you...
If the main email address that you're using is Gmail, you don't
need an email program or anything other than a browser (Microsoft
Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and dozens of others) to
access your email. Every Windows 10 and Windows 11 computer has t
least one browser by default, and that is Microsoft Edge.
Click this link https://gmail.com/
and it will open with your default browser, regardless of which one
it is. You can sign into Gmail from there. All of your emails will
be in a folder called "All mail" even the mail you downloaded using
an email program.
If you can't log into Gmail, because you lost your password Gmail
will present you with several ways you can recover it.
1. Type your Gmail address in the "Email or phone" box...
2. Click "Forgot password" to start the process of recovering your
password.
If Gmail is not your main email address and you can't log into your
other email addresses, please let me know what that email addresses
are and what happens when you try to access that address or those
addresses, and we'll go from there to see if we can help you.
If you cannot contact us by email,
go to this page,
and give us a phone number where we can reach you and we'll set up a
time to talk. We will do everything we can to help you, Carolyn.
Brenda wants to know if she
needs Malwarebytes
I searched your questions and answers and did not find an answer, so forgive me if you have already answered this question. Do I need Malwarebytes in addition to Emsisoft? My renewal is coming up and I don't want to renew if all I need is Emsisoft. Thanks for all you do! Our answer
We can fix your Windows computer... check out our low prices here!
A Simple Tip to
Keep You Safe: Hover Over Links Before You Click Them One of the tricks miscreants use is to disguise links, either with an image or a text link that looks safe but isn’t. We have written dozens (maybe hundreds of times) that it’s really important that you think before you click. One of the things you need to think about is counterfeit links. Those are links that look safe or text that disguises the true destination of the link. By hovering over a link, you can see the real deal – the real link – uncloaked and not disguised. And you’ll know in an instant if the link goes somewhere you don’t want to go. But we have learned when some folks hover over links, they don’t see the “real” URL because they don’t know where to look. We were remiss and forgot to tell people where to look to see the real URL. So we’re going to show you right now. How to reveal the true destination of a link To make sure that everyone knows how to reveal the true URL (web address) by hovering over any link, we made the animation below. You can watch as the mouse pointer hovers over the link and how the actual URL is displayed at the bottom left. You can see in an instant that the link that appears will take you to Microsoft Support will not take you to Microsoft Support… but to https://www.thundercloud.net/infoave/new
In this case, the destination of the counterfeit link leads to a safe site (ours). But it could have just as well led you to a fake site that looked like Microsoft support but would have led you into a very expensive tech support scam — or a hive of malware. The true destination of a link (either a text or image link) will always show at the bottom left corner of your browser when you hover over it. This works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and most other browsers. THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK This is a fundamental tip that can help you stay safe on the Web. And remember – always think before you click. You’ll serve yourself a lot of grief if you do.
A USB Wi-Fi Adapter is an Easy and
Inexpensive Fix for Many Wi-Fi Problems We receive several emails every month from folks who say they are having problems connecting to their wireless network (Wi-Fi)or that sometimes their computer connects to Wi-Fi and other times does not or that their connection is not stable. Sometimes you can browse the web with no problems and other times websites won’t load. If your computer’s wireless adapter is starting to fail and you’re having problems connecting or staying connected to the internet your first step should be to call your internet service provider (ISP). Your ISP can check your modem/router and the lines in/out of your home. If your ISP tells you that your modem/router is working fine and they find no problems, then the problem is most likely your computer’s Wi-Fi adapter is not working correctly. At this point, you have 2 choices A. You can buy a new wireless adapter. If you chose this solution, you’ll have to buy the wireless adapter, disassemble your computer’s case, remove the old wireless adapter, install the new wireless adapter, and then put your laptop or desktop back together. Or else pay someone else to put in the wireless card. If you choose to buy a wireless network adapter and have someone else install it for you, this option may cost you $100 or more. B. Buy a USB Wi-Fi adapter. This is the easiest, most cost-effective way to upgrade an older computer’s Wi-Fi wireless adapter. And choosing a USB Wi-Fi adapter, you can upgrade your older computer’s wireless capabilities, and that can make a big difference in your Internet connection. And a USB Wi-Fi adapter is the most cost effective and easiest way to fix your Wi-Fi woes caused by an older wireless card. What Does a USB Wi-Fi adapter do? What kind of USB Wi-Fi adapter do you need &
how much will it cost? Prices vary greatly, but you should be able to find a good 500+ Mbps, dual-band USB wireless adapter in the $15-$30 price range. Above: TP-Link Nano AC600 USB Wifi Adapter(Archer T2U Nano)- 2.4G/5G Dual Band Wireless Network Transceiver Adapter (Windows 10 and Windows 11)… $12.99 from Amazon. Read more…
You can spend a lot more but remember spending more doesn’t ensure that you’ll get a better adapter. Most adapters are plug & play. Some have software built into the USB adapter so when you plug it in the first time, it automatically installs the necessary software. So… if you have an older desktop or laptop and are having problems connecting to, finding, or staying connected to your wireless network, a USB Wireless Adapter may be all you need to upgrade your computer’s Wi-Fi capability and end your Wi-Fi woes without spending a lot of money.
Scam Update: Current Scams and How to Spot
Them Today, we’re going to update you on the most popular current scams floating around out there. As you probably already know, scammers are always looking for new ways to get their hands in your pockets and steal your money, or even worse — your identity. VPNs and identity theft protection companies cannot protect you from identity theft – regardless of their sometimes outrageous promises. The best way to protect your money and your identity is by keeping up-to-date with all the latest scams and by using common sense while you’re using your phone or while you’re on the Web. Don’t let your guard down, stay informed, and stay safe. Here are some of the current most common scams making the rounds right now Impersonation Scams – Hackers can spoof numbers for government agencies, like the IRS, debt collectors, your local bank, or even people you know, asking for sensitive information. Reactivation Scams – Scammers may send text messages asking you to reactivate your account by clicking on a link or calling a number. Delivery Notification Scams – You may receive a text message or email saying that you have a package waiting for you and to click on the link to track it. Prize Scams – Scammers claim that you’ve won a large prize or lottery and are required to pay an ‘administrative fee’ in order to claim it. Family Emergency Scams – You may receive a call from someone pretending to be a loved one in distress and asking for money to help them out with an emergency. And Here are some tips on how to spot scams Understand that scammers often pretend to be from trusted organizations. They may utilize technology to impersonate names and phone numbers. So what you see on your device may not be real. They can also create counterfeit websites that look very much like the trusted website they’re counterfeiting. Criminals may include high pressure, urgent requests — citing a problem or prize that needs your immediate attention. Many phishing emails or texts will contain grammatical errors in the message or sender’s email address. Scammers very often request a specific payment method that you must use to remedy the situation. Most often they’ll ask you to pay with gift cards or cryptocurrency. They may send you a check. Really! That’s right, they may send you a check to deposit, asking you to send back a portion of the money. When it’s discovered the check is fake you’ll be out the funds. Our dual missions are to help you with your PC and to keep you safe on the web. Stay informed as to what the latest scams are, always be alert, always use common sense, and be wary. We hope this helps you stay safe. Want more tips, tricks, and information? We have thousands of Windows tips, tricks, and more on our InfoAve website. Subscribe to our free InfoAve Daily newsletter.
Everything Makes Searching Your Computer FasterAs far as I know — or for as long as I can remember, at least — Windows has always had a search feature. It’s not always been particularly good. And it’s certainly not the fastest. In Windows XP and Vista, the Windows search feature was not very good and certainly not very fast. Windows 7 brought some improvements. Windows 10 and Windows 11 continued to improve the search feature. But Windows search is still not as fast as it should be, not as thorough as it could be, and not as fast Everything Search – a free search program for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Everything SearchEverything is not new; it’s been around for a long time. We’ve featured it before, but that was a couple of years ago. But seriously, it’s so good and so fast, it deserves mention. Everything is made by Voidtools. The developer, David Carpenter, is so sure you’ll like Everything search, he is willing to put his name and his email address on the Everything website – and that says a lot about the program and the developer. A few days ago we decided to check it out again. ‘And once again, we found Everything Search to be exceptional. It is an amazingly fast and thorough search engine for Windows. It makes it easy to find whatever you’re looking for on your computer. I did a couple of quick tests. And Everything produced great search results instantly. We looked for all files on my laptop with the “white.mid” in their names in the first test. Everything found, well, everything with “white.mid” in its name in the blink of an eye.
Let’s see if Everything can find “Ice Castles”, one of my favorite midis from our stationery days. You can even change the view from Details to Icon views and more.
And in another test, I just looked for all PDF files on my laptop. I have PDF files on this old laptop going back to 2013. I have saved quite a few in the last eight years. To find them all, I used the wildcard * (that is *.PDF) to search for all PDF files. In less than 2 seconds it found every PDF file on my laptop – and there are a whole lot of them. The search results can be ordered by name, date, type, etc. Below you can see Everything showing all PDF files on my laptop (some going all the way back to 2013) by name.
So, with our tests completed successfully, it’s time to bring in David Carpenter, the developer of Everything, to answer your questions:
If you want to read more about Everything, visit this page. Everything is available for download as a portable app or with an installer. It’s available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. If you’re looking for a faster, better way to find files on your Windows PC, give “Everything” a try. It’s fast, free, and it’s not bundled with anything else, and it contains no malware or badware. And you’ll be happy to know the author does not play whack-a-mole with the download links. You can download Everything from this page. You’ll have several installation options to choose from. If you’re an advanced user you can modify these however you wish. If you’re not an advanced user or you are a minimalist like us, just install Everything as it comes. It works great right out of the box as they say. And should you have any questions or problems, David Carpenter puts his name and email address on the Everything website.
