Microsoft says if your PC can run Windows Vista, it can run Windows 7. That's great. Since you can't really upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, if you're using Windows XP and you're just curious if your PC is capable of running Windows 7 - or if you're thinking about installing Windows 7 on your XP computer via the "clean install" route, you'll want to run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor (Beta) from Microsoft.

Here's what Microsoft has to say about it's "Upgrade Advisor" --

"Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor scans your PC's system, programs and devices to check if it's able to run Windows 7. After a few minutes, the report will let you know if your PC meets the system requirements, if there are any known compatibility issues with your programs and devices, and will also provide guidance on your upgrade options to Windows 7."

If you're using Windows Vista, you probably can run Windows 7 without any problems - and you can upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 without (they say) losing any of your current programs or files. Famous last words? We'll see, won't we?

There are lot of people out there (including Microsoft) who are listing "minimum requirements" for running Windows 7 (Home Premium and above). So, we're going to throw our two-cents worth into the fray with our "minimum requirements" too. Ours are higher than some of the others, well, because we know that you all like your computers to run fast and run well, right? Remember these are minimums - more is always better when it comes to computers and Windows.

Our Windows 7 Minimum Requirements

Processor: 1 GHz+ 32 or 64-Bit processor
RAM: 2 GB for 32-Bit, 4 GB for 64-Bit
GPU: 128 MB DirectX 9, WDDM 1.0 Compatible Video Card
HDD: 40 GB for 32-Bit, 80 GB for 64-Bit

Others requirements:

DX9 Capable sound card
1024×768 or better capable monitor (LCD is a plus)
DVD Drive
An internet connection (of course!)

Remember, you can run Windows 7 Basic with a lot less. But Windows 7 Basic - is probably not the Windows 7 version you're going to want. To run Windows 7 Home Premium or better, you should use our recommendations as guideline. Microsoft tends to low-ball the requirements, but running Windows on a computer that barely meets the minimum requirements usually results in user frustration. Take our advice. If you stick with our minimum requirements you'll have a much better computing experience and you won't be running around trying to upgrade your computer after the fact.
