Linda wonders why the cloud isn't on her new Windows 7 computer
I have been a reader of your newsletter for several years now. I like to think I am computer savvy. However...I just bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My question is this: I have been reading and hearing a lot about the cloud. It is not on my new PC. Do I have to download it and should I get it? How do I know if my PC will run it alright? I have used XP for so long, all the Windows 7 is foreign to me. Thanks for all you do.

Our answer
Thank you, Linda. The Cloud or the cloud, depending on who's writing - isn't something new; fifteen years ago, EB and I were using Hotmail - that was before Microsoft bought it. If Hotmail were introduced today, it would be called a "cloud application". Whether you call it a cloud application or web mail, it's still the same. The Cloud is The Web and The Web is The Cloud. Every generation has its own terminology - or as we are often wont to call it: "coolspeak". If you call a TV remote a "channel changer" young people will have no idea what you're talking about - but regardless of what you call it a channel changer is a remote and a remote is a channel changer. I'm guilty. I grew up a long time ago when my parents called the remote a channel changer. Those of us who are not so young anymore find the term "The Cloud" confusing. But it's not a mysterious, arcane new invention; it's the same Web we've all been using since we first clicked on "connect" on those old, noisy dial-up modems.

We received a lot of comments last week about the cloud - as we asked our readers to chime in with their thoughts. It seems there is a great misunderstanding about the cloud, or The Cloud. Those of you who have been using Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, for years, have been using the cloud for years as well; you just didn't call it "the cloud". And no one's going to ram the cloud down your throat. For the foreseeable future, there will be applications you can download and run from your computer which won't have anything to do with the cloud. Cloud-based (or in oldspeak "web-based") applications are the future. Don't worry though, for the immediate future you'll still be able to download and run applications from your computer. Five years from now we think there will be a shrinking number of programs available that you download and run from your computer, and an increasing number of cloud-based applications that run from the web. Smartphones and tablet computers use small programs which are known in coolspeak circles as "apps" to interface with applications running in the cloud. Whatever you call it, the cloud is the web or the internet - and the internet, the web, the cloud are, for all practical purposes, all the same.
