A comment from Rex
I have a Sony Notebook WPCW120AD with Intel Atom CPU at 1.6Mhz with 1MB RAM and a 250GB SATA Toshiba hard Drive. It had Windows 7 on it which automatically upgraded to Windows 10 Creators version 1703. I had a lot of junk on it left by a teenager and it was running slowly. I picked up a Windows 10 Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts by Stuart Yarnold and Mike McGrath and decided to set up faster paging and one of the operations was to check "No Paging". On reboot a low memory warning flashed and I could not reverse my actions. I went to my first line of defense System Restore of which I created one every month and the update created a couple but lo and behold due to low memory all restore attempts failed. I dug out your email on Reset and within a couple of hours I was back in a leaner cleaner version of Creators Version. A lesson learned 'don't mess with memory'. The Mother board was maxed out at 1GB. Thanks for your insights as always.

Thank you Darcy for installing Emsisoft and Thunderbird email system on my computer. It was fascinating watching you flip thru my computer. I have been receiving your Premium newsletters and daily tips for many years, everything I know about computering I have learnt from you guys Thank you so much

A comment from Karen
Just wanted to give a quick testimonial on our contact earlier this week in setting up Thunderbird. I love using it instead of going to my three different email addresses. You also gave me great advice on changing the email program that I was currently using. We were able to connect earlier than planned, which worked great for me and the process took the time that you indicated previously. Thanks so much for your help.

A comment from Gary
HI. I just wanted to thank Darcy for all his help in setting up my thunderbird account in in with my new E mail address, She was a pleasure to watch the way the pointer flew around my screen, it took a little while and I learnt that when you set up a password to not try and type it in just copy and paste  then you will not get it wrong, Thank you again Darcy, I would have been stuck with out your help, I have passed your name and contact details to all my friends and people that I deal with in NZ, to use your service. Regards, Gary P. New Zealand.

A comment from Carol
Hello, TC and Darcy. Just a short note about how pleased I am with your computer service. At present, I have received excellent, easy-to-understand and knowledgeable advice and service regarding my two computers; one with W 7 and the other with W 10. I now have peace of mind, knowing both of them have Emsisoft installed. No more worries. Everything works quietly behind the scenes, and not having to manage when a scan will happen and if I have to manage what day and time, I have to set it for, as I have had to do in the past with other security programs. Worry-free computering at its best with Cloudeight. Thanks so much.

A comment from Patricia
I just want to thank you both. You are great. You both worked on my laptop today and did a wonderful job. Now I'm not afraid of it. I was afraid that I would click on the wrong thing. Now it looks like I'm use to. You 2 are just wonderful. Thank you again.

Thanks so much to: Rex, Raewyn, Karen, Gary, Carol, Patricia and everyone who has taken time to write to us. And thanks all those who used our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care services.

Jean wants to know how to forward email using Outlook.com
How does one forward an email from Outlook? I can find the context menu with forwarding in it but when I fill it out, there is nothing that says ok or send or anything else. That is as far as it goes.

Outlook has to be one of the most incompetent email clients ever. I have it as a secondary client but it will never be my primary.

Sorry if this question has come up before. I am way behind in my reading.

Our answer
Hi Jean. Good question.  It's easy - here's how you do it. Just right click on the mail you want to forward and choose "Forward" from the drop-down menu: Here is a screenshot:

You can also have outlook.com mail address setup in Thunderbird which is a much better user friendly program. We can do this for you. See http://thundercloud.net/tbird for details.

Bob has a problem saving photos from an email
Hi Darcy thanks for looking at this I would like to know why this is happening. These are the photos that save as htm and when viewed show as text only. The only way I can save these as individual photos is by using the snipping tool. Have never experienced this problem before, have always used "save image as" or copy really appreciate your time. Regards, Bob

Our answer
HI Bob. The reason you cannot save image as, is because whoever sent you this email did not send you images - they sent you an entire web page and all its coding. However, good news. There is a way to save the images do this:

Right click directly on any picture you want to save, and choose COPY IMAGE from drop down menu

Now open a folder or a place on desktop and right click and choose PASTE (or just click Control key + V)

Now you have a copy of the saved picture.

Carol doesn't want to be notified that there are settings that affect battery life
Hi. I'm at my laptop. It has Windows 10 - and just had a message pop up:

"We found one or more settings that may affect battery life."

I have no idea where this came from. It was a message that slipped in on the right side of the screen, and then disappeared. Don't know what settings it refers to. Do you know what this means? And what should be done about it? Thanks. Carol

Our answer
Hi Carol. It is a Windows 10 feature; We have ours turned off, as it usually tells us to turn down brightness or enable sleep to get better battery life. It can be annoying. So here is how to turn off that notification:

Open Settings From start menu (or Windows key + i)
Select System.
Click on Notifications & actions tab.
Scroll down and look for Battery Saver. Turn off the slider.

Here is a screenshot for you:

Cloudeight InfoAve Windows tips and tricks

[Carol wrote back ... "Thanks, Darcy. When I went in, all the notifications were grayed out, so I couldn't turn off that notification. However, I realized all notifications were turned off. I slid that on and then was able to turn off the battery saver notification. All is well. Thanks again. :-) BTW, I keep the laptop connected to an outlet all the time, so I really don't know why that original notification appeared, telling me that I should be concerned about battery life." ]

Kathi says most of our tips are for Windows 10 but she has Windows 8
Most of your valuable information is for Windows10. I'm pretty sure I only have Windows 8. (can you check this?) If so can I upgrade to Windows 10 via you. ) Many Thanks, Kathi P

Our answer
Hi Kathi. Many tips that apply to Windows 10 also apply to Windows 8x. You can tell what version of Windows you're by doing this:

Press Windows key + R
Type WINVER in the run box
Press Enter

At this point, I would not upgrade a Windows 8 computer to Windows 10 as you missed the timeline when Microsoft was offering it as a free upgrade over 2 years ago. There are many sites telling you that you can still get Windows 10 upgrade free, but this is only for those who use "Assistive technologies". Many sites tell you to go ahead and say you use Assistive technologies (Ease of Use - Assistive technologies is for those with vision problems or who are otherwise physically challenged) even if you don't,  so as to get the upgrade free. But we don't think that's the right thing to do.

You would have to pay up to $199 for Windows 10. And since a new laptop with Windows 10 pre-installed will cost between $250 and $400 USD, you'd be better off to spend a couple hundred dollars more and not have to worry that your Windows 8 PC's hardware may not be compatible with Windows 10.

Windows 8.1 has several years of "life" yet. So you will get update and continue to use it. Assuming you have Windows 8.1, here are lifecycle dates:

End of mainstream support: January 9, 2018

End of extended support: January 10, 2023

End of extended support means the date when Microsoft will no longer provide automatic fixes, updates, security patches or online technical assistance.

Elaine doesn't want to pay $70 for ad-free Outlook.com and she doesn't like Gmail
Hi there, I know you have been over this before but I can't find it in my old copies of your newsletters. I have had to open a new email as my Paradise account is closing. I opened a Gmail account but didn't like it so opened a Outlook.com, I like it better but annoyed with ads. I discovered I can't get rid of them unless I upgrade to a Premium version at the cost of $70 per year, so I will put up with the ads. I've never had to pay for a email address before!

My question is how do I close down the Gmail account? Many thanks. Elaine M

Our answer
Hi Elaine. You may be better off with Gmail; its free. And when it's set up in Thunderbird mail, it's completely ad free and even nicer to use. We like Gmail so much we use it for personal and business as it is one of the few email applications that has nearly perfect spam filters; their spam filters rarely mark a good mail as spam, and it does not censor like some ISPs do. You have complete control over your email. If you choose to use Outlook, we can set it up in Thunderbird too and it will have no ads when you read your email in Thunderbird.

If you want to consider Tbird and have no ads whether you have a Gmail address or an Outlook.com address, , you can check it out here: http://thundercloud.net/tbird .

If you still want to delete your Gmail address and/or Google Account, see this page.

As far as getting Outlook.com email without any ads, I am not sure where you saw the $70 price tag, but when we looked this morning (9/27/2017) on this page, https://premium.outlook.com/?sl=1#/Offer ,here is what we learned.

"Get an ad-free inbox and more with Outlook.com Premium for the special price of 19.95 USD/yr. (regular 49.95 USD/yr.). Plus, enjoy a personalized email address like john@smithcrew .com that you can share among 5 people, free for the first year.

.... Outlook.com Premium is currently only available to customers in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Singapore, United Kingdom and USA...."

We think using the Thunderbird email program is your best bet since you can use the Outlook.com [free] or Gmail [free] and  never see an ad from either of them in your Thunderbird email.

Sylvia has problems backing up with File History on Windows 10
I am having problems with using the built in backup function of Windows 10 on both my laptop and my PC. It seems to run ok but then at the end says it didn't complete. It provides a list of files that it didn't backup which are Pictures, Videos, Documents etc. I don't know if this is something to do with my laptop and PC, an anomaly with Windows or something that I am doing. Is there another backup program that I can use that is straightforward and doesn't require a degree in computer technology to understand?

Other information:

I am trying to do the backups to an external drive
I have set up my daughters PC to do exactly the same and it completes with no issues

Our answer
Hi Sylvia. We are not sure which backup function you're referring to. Windows 10 has 2 different ones. One is called File History. The other is called Backup & Restore (Windows 7). We are going to assume you're using File History. If you are using File History, your best bet is to reset it. Resetting it won't remove the files that have already been backed up, but it will create a new backup that will work. And if you do use File History keep this is mind: File History is extremely touchy. It will work well as long as you don't disconnect your external drive very often. If you continually disconnect and reconnect your external drive, it will almost often break your current File History set up.

Follow the instructions in this Cloudeight tutorial to reset File History.

If you're using Backup & Restore (Windows 7), keep in mind that it won't work at all after/if you upgrade Windows 10 to the new Fall Creators Update (due out 10/17/2017). This update completely removes that feature. The Backup & Restore feature was a legacy carryover from Windows 10, hence its name.

Let us know if you need more help.

Jim asks wants to fix a LastPass problem on Firefox
I have been using Last Pass for a long time now and it's the best. However, recently all of my saved sites do not appear when I click on the Last Pass icon in Firefox. Everything is blank. The only way for me to access my saved sites is by visiting the "my vault" site. I have not found any info regarding this issue so any help would be great. Thanks for all you do. Jim V.

Our answer
Hi Jim. Thanks so much. It sounds like LastPass has become corrupted or Firefox has updated and the update affected LastPass. I've had this happen before with LastPass on Firefox.

The easiest & fastest way to fix it is to remove the LastPass extension from Firefox. After you've removed the LastPass extension, close Firefox and reopen it. Then go to https://lastpass.com/lastpassffx/ and download LastPass from that link. There have been a lot of complaints about the LastPass version Firefox installs from in the Mozilla Store, so it's best to download directly from LastPass. Since all your passwords and logins are stored in LastPass, all you need to do -- after you install LastPass -- is to login to LastPass using your master password. All your log-ins should work normally again.

Thelma asks about the Honey browser extension for getting deals while shopping online
I have a question, about shopping on Amazon. I was wondering if you have heard of using "HONEY" to save money at Amazon (while shopping online). Is it genuine or is it a hoax? Just when you have time, I know you are always very busy.

Our answer
Hi Thelma. There are a few pros but lots of cons. First: It's available from the Chrome store, meaning Google has approved it. Apparently Honey makes money when someone buys something from Amazon (or other stores you can use this extension on). It appears they also earn money by displaying ads.

Apparently too they offer a points reward system called Honey Gold. They give you points for things you buy. For example if you accumulate 6000 points you can earn $60 in Amazon gift cards. A reviewer however says they make it an arduous tasks to redeem your points.

Here are some comments from Honey users:

"This thing will slow your computer to a crawl. And when you click on the Honey icon you just get a bunch of discount codes that are completely irrelevant to what you were shopping for."

"My experience was it installed ads in my browser, and showed no interactive functionality while browsing products."

"Ends up being more of a coupon catalog than a bargain assistant."

"The reviews about the lag are no joke, it's ________ horrible. I'm guessing it's because it adds 250 plus coupon codes as a tab that ya have no option to turn off."

"It says on Facebook that you can get items cheaply. There is one item I want to look at, and I cannot. App is not user friendly."

"I like the idea of this add-on, but seems to slow down your browsing experience. Which would be fine as you can just disable it and re-enable it as needed, but the reason for the one star and me uninstalling it is because none of the codes ever work."

"I spent hours trying to figure out why Firefox was so slow, then eventually I was disabling all my add ons one at a time, and once I disable Honey my speed jumped right back up. Love what this does, but I can't live with the slowness."

"This thing, over the YEARS that I've used it, has also NEVER gotten me a coupon for anything. Thanks for reminding me to remove it."
So there you have it. We can say that personally, we would never use it, but we don't think it's a hoax, malware or a hijacker. It's up to you if you want to try it and see if it works for you.

But wait, there's more. Do any of you reading this, use Honey? Have you ever used Honey to do online shopping on Amazon or elsewhere? If so, please tell us what you think. We'd like to hear what you have to say!

Rich asks where and how to set System Restore points on Windows 10
I'm using Windows 10. Where and how do you set System Restore points?

Our answer
On Windows 10 the easiest way to create a new shortcut is to type "create restore point" (no quotes) in Windows 10 taskbar search (Cortana). As soon as you start typing you should see the "Create a restore point" appear. When you see it appear at the top of the search results, click on "Create a Restore Point".

Cloudeight InfoAve Windows tips and tricks

As always, with Windows, there are almost always more than one way to do things. Here's another way to create a System Restore point. Right-click on the Windows 10 start button, click on "System" then click "System info" (on the far right). Now, click on System Protection then click the Create button to create a System Restore point.

Cloudeight InfoAve Windows tips and tricks

Here's one more way to create a System Restore point.

Press the Windows Key + Pause/Break key. Click on System Protection  then click the Create Button. See screenshot above. The Pause/Break key is usually located on the top row of the keyboard just to the right of the PrtScr key. Some keyboards don't have a Pause/Break key, so if yours doesn't, you won't be able to access System Protection this way.

Or follow our tip featured elsewhere in this newsletter (in the tips section) and create a desktop shortcut to create a System Restore point on Windows 10 with just a click whenever you like.

Gordon gets an error when updating to Windows 10 Creators Update from Anniversary Edition

If you are up for a challenge, I am not able to update my computer to W10, v. 1703 it seems. I got to Microsoft tech support 3rd level, and after 7 tries of downloading, updating, etc, on the last pass, I get to 89% complete and the process quits and restores my computer to ver. 1607. That version runs quite well it seems and I haven't seen any problems with it.

I do not wish to run a clean install of the operating system as this would entail hours of reinstalling all the apps, drivers, and other software that makes my machine easy to use. I keep all (almost all) personal data on a 2nd physical drive, and of course that is part of the issue. I believe the error stated at the terminated end of the process had something to do with transferring data. I believe the last error code was 0CX1900101-040017. The Microsoft tech volunteered to do a new, clean OS install but I said no. I want to wait for the fall Creator's release to see if things change, but I am curious to hear your opinion. Certainly if you think you are able to do better than what I have experienced, I would give it a go. I just don't think it fair to ask you to do the impossible.

What I don't understand is if the system quits at 89% and renders an error code, why is it not possible to determine the exact cause of failure?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Our answer
Hi Gordon. Error code 0CX1900101-040017 is a Microsoft catch-all code that could mean many things. Trying to narrow it down to one thing is like going to a doctor and have her/him telling you that you are sick. You already know you're sick, that's why you went to the doctor.

Having seen that error code many times over, our best guess would be that it refers to incompatible drivers - particularly video/graphic drivers or sound drivers. We've even read reports of the update failing because of Bluetooth drivers.

If it is a driver problem, you won't know if you'll be able to upgrade to Fall Creators Update or not until you actually try it. I know this isn't very helpful - but even Microsoft can't give you the answer to this puzzle.

Let's hope the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update installs successfully for you. The only way you'll know is to try installing it when it's released on October 17, 2017. That's the day it starts rolling out. But keep in mind that it may take weeks or months until you get it via Windows Updates. However, on October 17, 2017, you'll be able to download the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update assistant or download tool and do the upgrade manually. We'll post the Fall Creators Update download links in this newsletter when they become available.

Your current version of Windows - Windows 10 Version 1607 “Anniversary Update” - will be supported by Microsoft until March 2018 when it will reach its "End-of-Life". So you do have time to wait and see what happens with the Fall Creators Update.

Change Your Computer Name, User Name and Password in Windows 10
Windows 10 (all versions)

In Windows 10, you can log in with either a Microsoft account or a local account. Changing your password is the same for either type of account. However changing your account name is not. If you use a local account you can change your account name locally. If you’re using a Microsoft account, you’ll have to login to your Microsoft account online to change it.

One benefit of using a Microsoft account is if you lose your password you can re-set it online by filling out a couple of forms. When you set up your Microsoft account in the first place you had to give your cell phone number or alternate email address and provide some other information only you would know. Microsoft uses this info to verify your information and then to re-set your Microsoft account password.

Change User Name: Local Account

If you have a local account (as opposed to a Microsoft account) you can change your account name by doing the following:

Right click the Start button
Click Control Panel *In Windows 10 Creators Update, right-click the start button, type CONTROL and press Enter)
Click User accounts
Click on “Change your account name”.

Change User Name: Microsoft Account

If you’re using a Microsoft account:

Click Start
Click on Settings
Click Accounts
Click “Manage my Microsoft account”

When you click on “Manage my Microsoft account”, your Microsoft Account web page will open in your default browser. You’ll need to sign in. After you sign in you’ll be able to change your Microsoft account user name there.

Change your password or PIN or add a PIN

Click Start
Settings
Accounts
Click on Sign-in options on the left side.

Click the Change button under Password to change your password. Even if you are using a Microsoft account, you can change the password from here.

If you don’t want to type a password, a PIN is a great alternative. A four digit PIN is easy to remember, but still protects your computer. If you don’t have a PIN set up, you’ll see an “Add” button under “PIN”. Click it and enter any 4 digit number. Once you add a PIN you’ll be able to log without a password, by typing your PIN. If you already have a PIN set up, you can either change it or remove it from this dialog

You can also choose a favorite picture and use it to sign in. That option is available here too.

Change Computer Name Windows 10 (Prior to Windows 10 Creators Update version 1703)

To change the computer name in Windows 10.

Click on Start
Click Settings
Click “About” (at the bottom left)

Click on the “Rename PC” button, and type in the new name you want to give your computer. You’ll get a notice that you must restart your computer for the change to take effect. Restart your computer and your computer will have a brand new name.

If you're using Windows 10 Creators Update, do this:

Click Start > Settings > System > About  then click the "Rename this PC " button.

Screenshots in Windows 10
Windows 10

There are dozens and dozens of Windows programs that make it easy to take screenshots… some free and some not… some really fantastic with a lot of features, others not so hot.

But for Windows 10 users who need to take a quick screenshot who don’t have any 3rd-party screenshot software, it’s easy. Windows 10 has made it dead simple to take screenshots.

First we are going to refer to the print screen key as PrtScr key. Your computer may have it labeled differently, but it will be similar to PrtScr. You should find it on most English keyboards on the top row of the keyboard between the Pause/Break key and the "Delete" key.

All you have to do is press Windows Key + PrtScr key. Voila! You’ll instantly get a picture of whatever was on your screen saved automatically in your Pictures folder in a folder called “Screenshots”. It will have a funky name like Screenshot or Screenshot(3). You can rename it, resize it, or leave it.

But what if you want to take a screenshot of your Lock Screen in Windows 10? Easy as pie, I tells ya. Why would you want to do that? I don’t know… maybe share your Lock Screen with a friend? Complain about Windows advertising? Who knows? Whatever the reason, it’s easy to do.

With the Lock Screen showing, press the PrtScr key. That places the image on your Windows clipboard. You’ll then need to “Paste” the image into your favorite image viewer or image editing program.

If you don’t have one installed, you can use MS Paint. All Windows users have MS Paint [at least through Windows 10 Creators Update]. You can access MS Paint this way… type Paint in the taskbar search and click Paint when it appears in the search results. Or right-click your start button, click Run, type MS Paint into the Run box and press Enter.

Once you have MS Paint open, click the Paste icon in the ribbon.

What's my Lock Screen look like? Well, today it looks like this:

Cloudeight InfoAve

If you want to test taking a screenshot of your Lock Screen and you don’t want to restart your PC, do this:

Press and hold down the Windows Key and press the L key. This locks your PC and shows the Lock Screen. If you use a password or PIN to sign in to Windows you’ll need to enter it to unlock your PC.

As you know, we are adamant about using strong passwords and a good password manager like LastPass.

However, we know that no matter how much we harp on something some people are not going to use LastPass or RoboForm or any password manager. So we offer this as alternative – but not instead of. A password manager like LastPass has more features, is more secure, and is not tied to one browser.

If  you use Chrome, and you don’t have a password manager and you don’t want to install one, we suggest that you use Chrome’s built-in password manager. It’s not as robust as LastPass, nor as secure and it only works in Chrome.

But it’s not only better than nothing, it’s a whole lot better than nothing. It will store your passwords and automatically fill in user names and passwords on sites which require you to log in.

Here’s how to use it. Open Chrome. Click on the Chrome menu (click on the 3 vertical dots icon at the top right). then click Settings. In Settings scroll all the way to the bottom and click on “Show advanced settings”.

Under the heading “Passwords and forms”,

Cloudeight Internet & Cloudeight InfoAve

Click on “Manage passwords.” Turn Google passwords on and turn Auto Sign-in on by moving the switches to the right. See the red arrows?

Also note, if you save your passwords in Chrome, and you have a Google account you can access your passwords from any device.

Now whenever you visit a site that requires you to log in, Chrome will save it for you. The next time you visit that site, Chrome will automatically fill in the username and password, for that site, for you. And it will store as many log-ins as you have.

Another nice feature is that you can see what the password hiding under the dots is – just by clicking the “eye” icon. But for your security, when you click the eye icon, you’ll need to type in your Windows password to see the password hiding under the dots. Good security feature.

Cloudeight Internet/Cloudeight InfoAve

We only recommend using Chrome’s built-in password manager if your Windows user account is password protected.

Bonus tip: How to enable the hidden Password Generator in Chrome

  1. Type chrome://flags in the URL bar to access Google Chrome’s flags page. When you do this you’ll see all the experimental features that are not yet included in the released version of Chrome.
  2. On the flags page, use the “Password Generation” and change its value to Enabled . Finally, click the Relaunch Now button that appears at the bottom to restart Google Chrome and save the changes you just made.

That’s all there is to it. From now on, when Chrome detects a password field on a webpage, it will automatically suggest a random password for you in a drop-down menu. You can simply click on the generated password to use it… and if you have Chrome Passwords turn on, it will save the password for you as well.; Pretty cool!

Create a Password Reset Disk
Windows 10

If you're not using a Microsoft Account to log in to Windows 10, a password reset disk is important . It’s the only the way you'll be able to reset your password and gain access your PC in the event you forget your Windows password. Of course, you'll need to create a password reset disk BEFORE you forget your password. It won't do you any good to create one after you forget your password...capiche?

You can use a USB flash drive or a memory card - but remember a memory card only works if your computer has slots for memory cards. If you're not sure, use a USB flash drive.

Here's how to make a password reset disk (drive) for Windows 10. This only works if you are logged in with a Local Account.

Right-click the start button, open Control Panel. (In Windows 10 Creators Update, right-click the start button, click on Run, type CONTROL and press Enter). In Control Panel, click User Accounts > User Accounts > Create a password reset disk.

Cloudeight InfoAve

The Forgotten Password Wizard opens. Insert a USB flash drive into your computer. Then click Next.

Cloudeight InfoAve

Choose the USB flash drive you just inserted then click Next. Type your current user account password and click Next. When the process is completed, click Next and then Finish to close the “Password Forgotten Wizard”. Congratulations, you've made a password reset USB flash drive In Windows 10. Now be sure you keep it in a safe place - and don't forget where you put it.

If you change your password, you will need to make a new Password Reset Disk (drive).

Remember, this works only if you are using a local account. If you log in using a Microsoft account (any email address ending in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, @live.ca, @msn.com) you don't need a password reset disk (in fact you won't even have an option to create one if you're using a Microsoft account). Why is this? Because if you're using a Microsoft account to log in to Windows, you can reset your password by resetting your Microsoft account password online. We think this is an great advantage, and it's a great reason to use a Microsoft account to log in to Windows 10.

The More Things Change [the more they stay the same]

We wrote our first “Your Computer Won’t Bite” e-book back in 2005. Windows XP was just a few years old and some folks were still hanging on to Windows 98 and Windows ME.

A twelve years ago we told you that your computer won’t bite, and though things have changed so much in those twelve years, the basic theme of that old outdated e-book is still true even though twelve years have passed. It is so true that the more things change… the more they stay the same.

The following excerpt originally appeared in the introduction to our 2005 “Your Computer Won’t Bite” e-book. Let’s take a look back 12 years to what we wrote in July 2005:

You control your computer; your computer doesn’t control you.

A good working knowledge of computers can help keep you safe.

No software program in the world is going to provide you with 100% protection from every evil on the Internet.

No software program can or will ever replace your brain.

No software program can or will ever replace your common sense.

The bad guys rely on the trusting nature of people. Whatever sounds too good to be true most always is.
You don’t need to be a computer guru to avoid someone taking advantage of you on the Internet.

Continuing education is a must. You don’t need to be a guru to stay safe, but you must continue to learn about your computer and the Internet because its always changing and evolving.

Don’t give your trust away – make those who want you to trust them earn your trust. Don’t trust strangers on the Web. Be wary.

The Internet can be a magical, fun and wonderful place. On it you’ll find the sum total of humanity’s knowledge; it’s an invaluable source of entertainment, knowledge, beauty and fun. If you are constantly worried about the boogeyman lurking in the hills and canyons, you’ll never get the maximum enjoyment from your computer or the Internet.

Your computer is your window to the world regardless of your age. It can take you backward or forward into time; it can take you on incredible journeys from the depths of the oceans to breathtaking nebulae thousands of light years away. You can learn to sail, to fly, to write; you can learn a foreign language or get a college degree. And the most amazing thing about computers and the Internet? You never even have to leave you house. You can explore the entire world and tap into the knowledge of humanity all without leaving your home.

I Love PDF

I don’t necessarily “love” PDF. I love chocolate chip cookies.  But I Love PDF is the name of our site pick today. So, gotta love it! This site will appeal to those of you who work with PDF file quite often and who find some of the free PDF readers lacking.

Now, first of all, if you have Windows 10 (any version) you can create and read PDF files with ease. But, Windows 10’s PDF feature are not as robust as those found in some of the better PDF readers, like Foxit Reader (free version), Sumatra, and others. Read more about creating and reading PDF in Windows 10 without third-party programs of any kind.

Recently,  while looking for something else, I stumbled upon a site that looked interesting,  This morning I finally had a few minutes to take a look at it and test some of it’s features. Needless to say, I was very impressed, otherwise it wouldn’t be named a Cloudeight Site Pick!

The number of useful free PDF services that this site offers, combined with its speed (but remember site speed is dependent on your internet connect speed too) got my attention.

As I’ve mentioned, the site is called “I Love PDF” (more correctly ilovepdf.com ) and it offers a number of free services without requiring that you register and without any discernible tricks, tricks or subterfuge. The site appears to be financially supported by non-intrusive ads and by the products/services it sells.

But all of its PDF tools are free to use and do not require registration. Here’s a list of the free PDF tools you’ll find on I Love PDF:

Merge PDF – Combine PDFs in the order you want with the easiest PDF merger available.

Split PDF – Separate one page or a whole set for easy conversion into independent PDF files.

Compress PDF – Reduce file size while optimizing for maximal PDF quality.

PDF to WORD – Easily convert your PDF files into easy to edit DOC and DOCX documents. The converted WORD document is almost 100% accurate.

PDF to POWERPOINT – Turn your PDF files into easy to edit PPT and PPTX slideshows.

PDF to EXCEL – Pull data straight from PDFs into EXCEL spreadsheets in a few short seconds.

WORD to PDF – Make DOC and DOCX files easy to read by converting them to PDF.

POWERPOINT to PDF – Make PPT and PPTX slideshows easy to view by converting them to PDF.

EXCEL to PDF – Make EXCEL spreadsheets easy to read by converting them to PDF.

PDF to JPG – Convert each PDF page into a JPG or extract all images contained in a PDF.

JPG to PDF – Convert JPG images to PDF in seconds. Easily adjust orientation and margins.

Page numbers – Add page numbers into PDFs with ease. Choose your positions, dimensions, typography.

Watermark – Stamp an image or text over your PDF in seconds. Choose the typography, transparency and position.

Unlock PDF – Remove PDF password security, giving you the freedom to use your PDFs as you want.

Rotate PDF – Rotate your PDFs the way you need them. You can even rotate multiple PDFs at once!

I Love PDF couldn’t be any easier to use. You choose the PDF file on your computer you want to edit/convert/change. Then you upload it to I Love PDF by selecting it or dragging it to the I Love PDF page. To perform the task you’ve chosen, all you have to do is click a button. In a few seconds (or minutes depending on how many pages you’re working with and how large they are) the task your chose is completed. Next just download the modified files to your PC. If you’re working with multiple pages, you will download the files in zip format.

What is the Internet of Things?

The world is full of cool names for things; I suppose it has always been so. I know for a fact our grandparents had cool names for things. For instance, I can remember when people say – “Hey get Gary on the horn.” The Horn was a cool name for a telephone. And speaking of cool names, what about the word cool itself. It’s a beatnik word from the 40’s and 50’s when it was usually used in conjunction with “man”- as in “That’s really cool, man.” Words like Fridge and Mike and Cell and all the rest of the cool words – usually shortened versions of the original word – are testament to the human need for speed. For example: I can say Fridge faster than I can say refrigerator.

So it should not surprise anyone that we now refer to things which are stored on Web servers — the way things have always been stored on Web servers — as being stored “in the cloud: . The cloud is just another name for Web, Web servers, and Internet. So I guess it’s easier and faster and cooler to call it the cloud than to call it the Web, a Web server, Web servers and/or Internet.

When Darcy and I were taking our first baby steps on the Internet back in 1995 – twenty-two years ago – it was a different place than it is today. It was more a curiosity then and it had some really dedicated fans like us who extolled its virtues to everyone who’d listen. I can people used to look at us like were insane when we told them we building a Web site for email stationery. Most people barely knew what email was in those days – and building a Web site was something reserved for geeks or introverted hermits who rarely if ever saw the light of day. But we were on the Internet as much as our day jobs would allow – some said we were addicted, and that’s probably true.

Today the Internet is no longer a curiosity – it’s a necessity. Banking, credit card systems, stock markets, online stores and even brick and mortar stores depend on computers and the Internet. If the Internet were to simply disappear the world would be in a state of chaos. Having come from the days when we were freaks because we spend our spare time hunched over computers downloading as much freeware as we could – before the days of ubiquitous malware – and building our very first Web site called “Thundercloud & Eightball’s Christmas Graphics” we never stop being amazed by the growth of the Internet, particularly in the last 10 years.

The Web has evolved from a curiosity, to a necessity, controlling many facets of our life. And so it is because of the nature of technology to grow exponentially, that we have now call the Internet – The Internet of Things.

No longer is the Internet accessible only by people hunched over a computer – it’s accessible from phones and tablets as well as many other things. Things like thermostats, watches, refrigerators, automobiles, ovens, pacemakers, and more things. And it is all these things that comprise the “Internet of Things“.

To us an internet refrigerator or internet oven or an internet thermostat seem a little bit over-the-top, but for those who never knew a world without computers, without the Internet, and without cell phones, those internet-connected gizmos are probably pretty ho-hum.

And to think we’re just at the threshold of this Internet of Things. Cool-speak for Internet of Things is IoT. We cannot imagine what the Internet of Things will be in fifty years, not that it will matter to us – we’ll be long gone. EB's going to frozen and put in orbit around the IoT.

As for us, we liked the Internet better when it was the Internet of one thing – when it was new and when it was just a curiosity. Like looking back on things usually does, it brings with it a sad sense of nostalgia.

But it is what it is.

So whether you’re reading this while hunched over a computer or on the menu screen of your Internet refrigerator, or on the dial of your Internet-connected smart watch or any other Internet-connected “thing” – you are part of the Internet of Things. And that's whether you know it or not and whether you like it or not. IoT don't care. Doesn't care?

Did I mention the Internet coffee maker? The Internet light bulb? Your car? Your garage door? Your front door? Your rice cooker? Your slow cooker? Your pacemaker? Your lawn sprinkler? Your snow blower?

EB you are certainly one of the THINGS on the Internet of Things! EB-IoT.
