A comment from Dayle
Darcy needed to fix my computer when I succumbed to that darn Microsoft scam. I didn't lose my money, but don't want to be caught like that again. Ten gold stars to Darcy for doing a wonderful job.

A comment from Sandra
Thanks TC. My computer is running great again. I don't know how you guys do it for the price you charge. I had Best Buy Geeks fix (try to fix) my computer 2 years-ago and it cost me $150 and my computer never did run right after that. Now, for 1/3 of their price, my computer is running as good as new. Thanks again!

A comment from Terri
A big thank you to Darcy for getting my Thunderbird email set up and working - and for cleaning up the mess on my PC. She went way above and beyond to help me and I want her to know how much I appreciate it! Thank you so much, Darcy!

A comment from Danny
A big thanks to TC for coming to rescue on short notice. I was having some critical computer problems. Lucky I had a couple of unused Cloudeight Direct repair keys. when I wrote to TC for help, he said he could connect to me right away and take a look. He sent me a link to connect, got on my computer, fixed all the problems and some other ones I didn't even know I had. Now my computer is running like it should. Thanks TC. I never expected such quick and expert service.

A comment from Janice
Just wanted to thank Darcy for setting up Thunderbird for me. I was so getting sick of all the Windows Live Mail errors - and after reading I might lose all my stuff if I kept using it, I wanted to switch right away. Thunderbird is a great program and it really didn't take me long to get use to using it. I'm sure part of that is because Darcy set it up for me and got all my email accounts working perfectly. Thanks again! Janice

Thanks so much to: Dayle, Sandra, Terri, Danny, Janice and all of you who have taken time to write to us this week. Thanks for all of you who purchased our brand new 2017 InfoAve Premium E-book Volume 14.  And thanks everyone who used our Cloudeight Direct Computer Care services. Also, a BIG thank you to all who have helped us with your donations and those who have shared our site with friends. THANK YOU! EB & TC.

Christine has 2 questions: One about System Restore and one about the address bar in the taskbar
I am using Windows 10. How do I find system restore? How do I get the address bar out of the task bar?

Our answer
Hi Christine. We'll answer both your questions. We will start with System Restore.

-- System Restore --

If you want to use System Restore to restore your computer to an earlier time, just right-click the Start button, click Run and type RSTRUI in the Run box and press Enter. This will start System Restore recovery.

-- OR --

If you're looking for the System Restore application, you can find it in Windows 10 a number of ways, here are two:

#1. (Easy way) In the Taskbar search (Cortana) type System Restore > then click on Create a restore point when it appears at the top of the search results. If you have your taskbar search (Cortana) hidden, just hold down the Windows Key and tap the S key to bring up the search.

#2. Open File Explorer (from the Start menu, Taskbar File Explorer icon, or by holding down the Windows Key and tapping the E key). In File Explorer, right-click on "This PC" (it will be in the left pane) and click Properties. In Properties, click "System protection".

-- Taskbar Address Bar --

Right-click on an blank area of your taskbar. Hover over "Toolbars". Remove the check next to Address by clicking on it. Once the check mark is gone, the Address bar will no longer appear in you Taskbar. If you ever want it back again, just go back and click on it again. Here's a screen shot to help you:

Ron wants to know what we used to watermark some of our images
I noticed that you have begun to watermark the images that you put in your Daily Hints. I believe that that your readers would be interested in learning how to do this.

Our answer
Hi Ron. We use FastStone Capture. Our trusty old screenshot tool we've been using for many years. We created the watermark image (a transparent PNG) in PaintShop Pro (antique version 7) and that's the image that FastStone Capture uses for the watermark.

Here, we'll show you:

Jean has problems connecting to her Wi-Fi
I am still struggling with this computer. I can now connect with Wi-Fi after a jillion futile attempts, but it connects when it wants, and some things still don't work right. So yes, I am ready to try what you said!

Our answer
Hi Jean. It sounds like your computer's wireless adapter is going bad. But there's an easy way to workaround that; it's easy to do and inexpensive too! Get yourself a USB Wireless (Wi-Fi) adapter. All you have to do is plug it into any available USB port, install the software that comes with it (if any) and connect to your Wi-Fi network. It's the easiest way to work around a wireless network adapter that is going bad. It takes less than 5 minutes to get a USB Wireless Adapter up and running. You don't even have to open your computer's case... and you can do it for less than $30.

Here's a Wireless USB adapter we found on Amazon that says it's for Windows 10 too.

[Jean wrote back: "Hi Darcy. You'll be happy to know that I got a USB Wireless Adapter as you suggested, and my computer is working fine now!! Thank you so much for the suggestion.. you saved me from having to buy a new computer!"]

Del needs printer drivers to set up his printer on Windows 10, but his CD/DVD drive does not work
Had to purchase a new printer and a CD came with it. I have Win 10 and discovered that my CD player does not work!! It worked with Win 7! I checked Microsoft, but I could not find an answer except there are a lot of people really ticked because w/Win 10, we lost the player! Do you know of a fix that can be downloaded? My printer needs what is on that CD! Thank you for whatever help you can give!!

Our answer
Hey there, Del. We don't have enough information to help you figure out what's going on with your CD/DVD drive but we can tell you that some people have problems with DVD/CD drive not recognizing disks because AutoPlay is turned off. If yours is turned off, it may appear that Windows does not recognize a disk in the drive. Here is how to check to see if AutoPlay is on, and if it's not on, how to turn it on:

Click Start --->Settings--->Devices--->AutoPlay. Make sure AutoPlay is "On", then set your CD/DVD drive as you want it. See screenshot below:

Cloudeight InfoAve

Above: Turn the switch under "AutoPlay" to "On".

If your CD/DVD still won't work. You can set up your printer without an installation disk. First make sure your know your printer model & model number. Next go to the Web site of the printer manufacturer (HP, Canon, Brother, Epson, etc.) And you'll be able to download the same files and drivers that are contained on the installation CD.

Keep in mind too that many newer laptops come without a CD/DVD drive; this is another reason why every printer manufacturer makes their installation & setup files available by download.

Annie cannot boot her desktop computer after installing an update
My problem is that since I did the Windows 10 Creators Update I can't get into my desktop computer. I am using my laptop for now, but this is very difficult for me and only temporary. Every time I turn on my desktop PC I get a black screen, and then writing comes up with the following something about ... Pv4, and then that changes to .............Pv6. I have tried Googling, and going through your emails that I have on this laptop, but can't seem to find a fix for it. Please can you help me?

Our answer
Hi Annie. Please see our article entitled "What to do if Windows 10 Won't Boot". In that article, we cover several ways of booting a computer that won't start. If you have any questions after reading it, please let us know and we'll try to help.

In order for us to look at your PC we need to be able to have you boot up and connect to the Internet. So, let's hope one of the tips in that article will help you get your PC started and back up and running. Once you get it started and you're back online, we will be able to connect to your PC and help you.

Please let us know if this helps get your PC up and running again.

Sylvia does not want to use Windows 10 Mail app

When I want forward something, say a picture to my mail program (Gmail), and click 'send to' I only have the Win10 email program choice. How can I make a folder choice of Gmail or Comcast?

Our answer
Hi Sylvia. There really is no easy way to set "Send to > Mail recipient" to open with Gmail. There are two extensions we have read about, but not used. Since these were recommended by a respected source, Lifehacker, we'll tell you where you can read more about them.

The first is called GmailDefaultMaker and you can read about it here.

The second is called "Mailto: For Chrome" (it works only if you have Chrome installed). You can read more about it here.

The easiest solution, however, is just setting up an mail program like Thunderbird. You can set up both your Comcast and Gmail accounts in Thunderbird, then set Thunderbird as your default mail program. That way, when you right-click on a picture and choose Send to > Mail recipient, Thunderbird will open and you can send with either Comcast or Gmail.

We offer an inexpensive Thunderbird set up service. We'll connect to your computer and set up Thunderbird with up to 3 email accounts, and configure it correctly for best performance and even set it up for using stationery. You can read more about our Thunderbird Set-up Service here.

Or you can choose to set up Thunderbird yourself, or choose another email program.  Once you have an email program set up on your PC, you can set it as default and it will open when you click "Send to > Mail recipient".

Emily's computer won't start
My computer wont start. A few days ago our electricity was off about an hour. When it came back on my computer won't start. At all. I have unplugged and tried again many times. No luck. There is power to modem and I checked power to computer, which is there. Called server to make sure. Looked inside tower to see if anything looked black or "fried." Not that I can see. Vista OS. I know it's old but it was working fine until the electricity went off. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks. Emily

Our answer
Hi Emily. First off, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) has nothing to do with whether your computer is turned on, working, etc. They are only to provide you with Internet access so you can view Web pages, send and receive email, etc. Power to the modem has nothing to do with the PC itself either.

It sounds to us like something inside was fried by a power surge if your computer is not coming on. Our guess is that it's your computer's power supply, the /off switch or the motherboard. It would not be something you could see just by looking inside your PC.

Vista is quite old and I would advise not putting any money into this to fix it as you will be losing all support anyway as far as updates from Microsoft and most major programs.

A new laptop will run you around $300 and the ONLY things you really need are the following:

1. Screen size you like

2. 4 GB of RAM (more if you can afford it)

3. 500 GB to 1 TB hard drive (most all laptops for sale have at least 500 GB hard drives.)

Past that, don't let anyone tell you that you need other bells and whistles. Unless you are a power gamer or 3D artist and do a lot of 3D rendering, you just don't t need them.

J Stands for Downloads
Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10:
Works in all major browsers

Y’all like simple tips, right? Here ya go. They don’t get much easier than this one.

Just last week, I downloaded a program I wanted to test. But things being busy, I forgot I downloaded it. Later in the week, I remember I downloaded a program I thought might be a candidate for our freeware pick of the week. But I simply could not remember the name of the program. Looking in my download folders is a lost cause. I have several of them. There are hundreds of things in there ( I’m a slob – but in my defense, over 4 dozen of them are site backups that I keep on an external drive as well as “in the cloud”).

I could not remember the name of that program to save me. I didn’t even know the first letter. Now I could have opened up all 3 of my download folders and sorted them from newest to oldest… but I’m lazy, I tells ya.

I just fired up my browser (Chrome) and pressed the CTRL + J keys. And what to my bloodshot eyes should appear? All my recent downloads, including the program whose name I could not remember. As soon as I saw it, I recognized it.

Instead of wasting time and click monkeying around sorting my download folder to find it, the old CTRL + J shortcut opened the recent downloads page from my browser and I found what I was looking for.

Next time you’re looking for something you downloaded but you can’t remember where or what it was, let your fingers do the walking: Press CTRL + J. It works in all browsers, not just Chrome.

J stands for downloads; oh Jes indeed it does!

[ After all that, the program turned out to be a total waste of time. I wouldn’t recommend it even to my worst enemy. No, EB! I don’t mean you! You’re not my enemy, your my nemesis!]

Cloudeight InfoAveTech Support Scams, Microsoft Support Scams: Scams Scams Everywhere!
All versions of Windows

We published this article in May 2017 – focusing then on the Microsoft support scams going around at the time. This is a big update to that post and we’ve included even more screen shots of Microsoft tech support scams and other tech support scams – the ones you are most likely to encounter.

But whether it’s a Microsoft support scam or any tech support scam, you need to know these kinds of scams abound- and sooner or later, you’re probably going to run in to one.

We receive at lest 2 dozen emails each week from folks who encounter these kinds of scams and are convinced their security software has let them down… and woe… now they’re infected. But it’s not true. Most support scams are carefully crafted advertisements cunningly created to make them appear to be warnings coming from your own computer or from Microsoft.

Because it seems these tech support scams are back in full vigor, we hope you’ll read this article, look that the images here, so that you’ll know, right away, when you’ve encountered one of these tech support scams. Remember: The actual warning you see may look a bit different [the most popular tech scam going around at the time of this writing what we call the “You-have-been-infected-with-the-Zeus-Virus” scam. We can assure you, the so-called Zeus virus is really awful sounding, but it’s a fake. It’s the current “virus-du-jour” of the tech support scammer clique.

In the past, most people who have run into the Tech Support or Microsoft Tech Support Scam have been contacted by scammers and warned by telephone that their computers are infected or compromised.

But lately, it’s been the fake “your computer is infected with **you name the non existent virus/Trojan** or the **your computer has been compromised and your personal information is at risk** popup that appear, seemingly out of nowhere, when browsing the web.

Just in the past week, we have had at least a dozen people who wrote to us and told us that they fell for or almost fell for a scam. The one that seems to trick the most people is the one we’re going to call the Microsoft Tech Support Popup Scam.

Most all of these fake “Your computer is infected” or “Your computer is compromised” or other dire warnings that pop up out of nowhere, are almost popups ads. They’re not viruses, or Trojans or malware. They’re ads that try to trick you into calling a phone number for support. They’re scams.

And regardless how many times the scam popups mention Microsoft or show the Microsoft logo, or how many times the ads refer to “Certified Microsoft Technicians” there’s a 100% certainty that they’re scams.

We have warned our readers about scams many times, but we are once again seeing more and more people losing a great deal of money to these criminals… and many times they’re being tricked because they see the Microsoft logo or Certified Microsoft Technicians on the fake warning, and that convinces them the warning is legitimate and they let down their guard and call the phone number and then allow the crooks access to their PC.

Please remember this!

Microsoft is never going show you a popup warning you that your computer is infected or compromised. Microsoft is never going to show you a popup with a telephone number and urge you to call Microsoft Support to fix or clean your PC. Never. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever.

No legitimate security software is ever going to tell you that your files are going to be deleted if you close a dialog or window… or tell you to call a phone number . Not even the worst legitimate security software would do that. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever.

For this post, we’ve collected a few of these fake warning popups, and we posted them at the bottom of this article online. Keep in mind, these are just a very few of the many variations of scam popups out there… there are hundreds of them. Some have different wording, slightly different colors, some look more realistic than others, but they all have the same mission: To get you to call a number so they “fix” the non-existent virus infections, computer problems or errors.

Please take a few minutes to read the rest of this article online
and see some of the screenshots we've collected of these kinds of scams in action. We're hoping that by reading this and looking at the screenshots of these kinds of scams, you'll recognize a scam should you encounter one. And it's quite likely, if you spend any time at all browsing the Web that you will encounter one.

Read the rest of this article and view actual screenshots of these scams in action - so you'll know a scam when you see one!

Empower Mode
Windows 10 (all versions)

OK, we'll admit, we changed its name. Everyone else calls it god Mode. We're not happy with that name, so we hereby change its name to Empower Mode. This modality has been part of Windows since Windows XP and it continues to work - and be useful - in Windows 10.

Empower Mode lets you access every feature of the Control Panel from a list. Because every is listed by category, you will probably find settings you never saw listed in Control Panel -- but they were always there.

While you can create a shortcut to Empower Mode anywhere, we think it is best on the desktop since it's easier to find.

It's easy to do. Here's how to create a shortcut to Empower Mode.

1. Create a new folder on your desktop (Right-click on an empty space on your desktop and click "New" then "Folder".

2. Right-click on the newly created folder, choose "Rename" and rename it

EmpowerMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

(We certainly recommend you copy that and then paste it as the folder name.)

3. When you're done you'll have an icon on your desktop that looks like this:

Cloudeight InfoAve

And when you click it, you'll be empowered with every Control Panel setting -- right at your fingertips.

Windows Troubleshooters
Windows 10 Creators Update

Back in the day, it was easy to write tips and tricks for Windows because each version was defined by a number or a name – like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8. But Microsoft’s idea of Windows as a Service (WaaS) has created a unique problem. We can’t write generic tips for Windows 10 anymore, because now there are three current, fully-supported versions of Windows 10, each one different enough that, sometimes,  tips need to be written for one specific version of Windows 10.  For example: The two most recent versions, Windows 10 Version 1607 – AKA “Anniversary Update” and Windows 10 Version 1703 AKA “Creators Update” are similar, yet sometimes very different.

Moving right along…

There have always been built-in Troubleshooters in Windows 10, but most people don’t know they are there because they are buried in Control Panel — All Control Panel Items–>Troubleshooting—>All Categories. How many times have you ever looked there? Probably never, or at least not very often.

One of the new features of Windows 10 Version 1703 Creators Update brings the Windows troubleshooters out of the closet and puts them where you can find them. If you are using Windows 10 Creators Update, you’ll find the troubleshooters in Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot.

See?

Cloudeight InfoAve computer tips & tricks

As you can see in the screen shot above,  Creators update divides the troubleshooters in to 2 categories:
  1. Get up and running
  2. Find and fix other problems
Windows 10 Creator Update has 19 troubleshooters included under the category, “Find and fix other problems”.

While we have not had a whole lot of success with Windows troubleshooters in the past, it’s quite possible they work in many situations.   The troubleshooters included in the Windows 10 Creators Update are the newest iterations of Windows Troubleshooter, so they should be improved. We can’t promise that they are, but one then is for sure, they are a whole lot easier to find.

Here is a list of all nineteen Windows Troubleshooters included in the Windows 10 Creators Update:

Blue Screen Troubleshooter
Bluetooth Troubleshooter
Hardware Troubleshooter
Homegroup Troubleshooter
Incoming Connections Troubleshooter
Internet Connections Troubleshooter
Keyboard Troubleshooter
Network Adapter Troubleshooter
Playing Audio Troubleshooter
Printer Troubleshooter
Power Troubleshooter
Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
Recording Audio Troubleshooter
Search and Indexing Troubleshooter
Shared Folders Troubleshooter
Speech Troubleshooter
Video Playback Troubleshooter
Windows Update Troubleshooter
Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter

Had any success with the troubleshooters included with Windows 10 Creators Update? Let us know.

One Word Essays

Thanks to our friend Bill V. for this site of the week. It is amusing, poignant, thought-provoking and beautiful. There is something here for everyone and everyone will enjoy these photographs. (Yes, EB? No they're not really one word essays...they are captioned photographs which tell a story or provoke a thought. Yes, they can call them essays! Will you please quit interrupting me? Ouch!)

The old cliché is certainly true of these "one word essays" - a picture says a thousand words; in the case of these photographs, they often provoke a flood of memories and / or thoughts.

Here are a few examples:

A Gift From Maryanne

Introduction:  This essay was written in 2008 and it remains one of our favorites. We’ve made some changes to it and updated it and now it is more a short story than an essay. Every time I read it I am reminded of the truly important things in life – and maybe you too will come away a better person because of this chance to see the world through the eyes of dying child. This essay / short story is called “A Gift From Maryanne”. We hope enjoy reading it. Most of all, we hope it touches something inside you and that perhaps after reading it you will look at today differently than you would have otherwise. Thank you for reading…

I don’t recall any shadows in that room on that late autumn morning. A gray, forlorn sky loomed and hovered over everything. There was no hint of the sun and in the dim morning light there were no shadows except for the shadows that you see only with your mind; the shadows of things yet to come.

The air was still and there were no birds singing. There was a strange and melancholy feeling in the air and you could tell it was not going to be a good morning.

Inside the house there was an eerie silence. The sound of labored breathing made me even more aware of how silent that room was. As soon as I entered I felt the morose and prescient feeling of doom. It was the kind of feeling you struggle with and try hard not to feel, but you feel it all the same; it was cloying and stuck to me. There was an awful sadness too – the air was heavy with it. It was a sadness that crawled under your skin and buried itself in your soul, and once it did, you knew it wouldn’t let go; it was the kind of sadness that came to stay.

As usual, a scented candle burned and flickered in a corner; it smelled strangely sweet to me and I didn’t like it. While the scents may have changed from time to time, it didn’t matter. The candle always filled the room with the same weak, sweet odor- but the hungry odor of death prevailed; the scent of the candle was pathetic and powerless against it.

There were other odors too, of course: the smell of antiseptics, medicines, and sickness that floated in the air and mingled curiously with the sour and sweet scent of the candle. The other smells were grim and meager compared to the morbid smell of darkness and of sad and mournful things. Once you’ve smelled impending death, you will never forget it...

More CTRL for you!

We know you all want more CTRL over your PC, right? Well, here are some CTRL key shortcuts that can save you time and trouble.

Ctrl+F = Find something on a page – in a browser, text editor, PDF editor, ebook, etc. To remember this easily, think F = FIND.

Ctrl+P = Print the document you have open. Whether it’s a web page, a Word doc, PDF file, text file, etc. Think P = PRINT.

Ctrl+N = Opens new window in the program that’s running. Think N = NEW.

Ctrl+S = Saves the document you’re working on. Think S = SAVE.

Ctrl+H = Shows your browser’s history. Think H = History

Ctrl+J = Shows a list of downloads in your browser. Think J= ? I give up! J=Downloads! Junk? Is your downloads folder full of junk?

And let us not fail to mention:

Ctrl+A = Select All

Ctrl+C = Copy

Ctrl+V = Paste

And finally, my personal favorite…

Ctrl+EB = EB disappears.

And all these work (all but Ctrl+EB) on any version of Windows.
