Jo asks about Thunderbird & IncrediMail
Hi guys. Just a quickie about Thunderbird. I was reading you can set it up
similar to most email programs (I am a long time user of Incredimail
25years) But you do not import the emails that I have saved in many
different folders. Is it possible for me to import them though? I have so
many important documents & 1000s of purchases saved that I need to keep &
have access to using a search facility. If it is possible is there a
tutorial on how to do it? My Mum (90 years old) will also have the same
problem. We are both still using windows 7 but know we will have to upgrade
that soon too. Also, Mum is currently still using the old Incredimail premium
as she did not like Incredimail 2 or 2.5. Would that be a problem? I noticed
most cases of transferring over only list Incredimail 2 & 2.5, not premium.
By the way, YOU GUYS ROCK! I always look forward to your weekly emails. I
live in Australia, so they have a long way to come lol. Kind regards, Jo
Our answer
Hi Jo. We quit using and recommending Incredimail years ago when they turned
into an ad agency and put the mail program on the back burner. The last we
knew. you could not export mail as they held it hostage unless you paid
them. I don't know if that has changed, but at one time when I had checked,
you could drag mail from the program to a folder in windows explorer. Once
that is done, you can drag it into Thunderbird.
If mail is exported from a supported mail program, it can be imported into
Thunderbird, but as I said, I'm not even sure if Incredimail allows exports.
Thanks for your nice comments too!
Marilyn says a Windows update converted all her Kindle files into PDF files
Hi TC & Darcy, I had many kindle books stored on my computer in the azw
Amazon format. Last night they were in that format & tonight they have
changed to PDF documents. Still readable on the Kindle, but I never use,
like or want PDf for anything, (I hate it). I have not changed this myself,
so I'm presuming that it may have been an update of some sort. How do I get
them back to what they were originally please. As always my sincere
appreciation for all your help.
Our answer
Hi Marilyn. Kindle eBooks are in azw format which are actually Mobi files
with better compression. I'm not aware of any Windows Update that would
arbitrarily convert files in azw or Mobi format to PDF. It looks to me like
you may have something else going on there.
A Windows update may corrupt your icon cache though, thus making azw/Mobi
file icons appear to be PDF files (i.e. azw/Mobi files presenting with a PDF
icon). The first thing you should do is turn off your PC - make sure all the
power lights are off and leave your computer off for 5 minutes and then turn
it back on. Then check to see if your icons are now correctly presented. I think
this should correct your problem. I'm guessing that your Kindle icons were
changed to PDF icons but the underlying files are still in Amazon format.
If the above does not help, try this: Right-click on one of the files and
then choose "Open with" and select "Kindle" (you may have to browse to find
your Kindle app). When you do this, make sure the box at the bottom of that
dialog next to "Always use this program to open ** files" (paraphrased) is
checked.
If that does not work you can try to convert PDF to Amazon files (azw/mobi)
using a free (safe) program called Calibre. You can read more about and/or
download Calibre here.https://calibre-ebook.com/
I hope this helps you, Marilyn.
Sylvia asks about file transfer programs
Hello. I want to send info from a portion of a website on my PC. I
downloaded 2 free transfer products. SHAREit and Sendanywhere called Sendy.
They are very confusing to understand as they seem to only share between
your own device/s...I wanted to send - share with another person. Can you
please advise which freeware program you advise for this purpose. Thank you,
Sylvia
Our answer
Hi Sylvia. It depends on what you're using the file sharing Web app or
program for. If you're sending files to other people, the simplest way to do
it is to use an online web application like
https://wetransfer.com/. You just add the folder or file(s) you and to
send, include your email address and the address(es) of your recipient.
"WeTransfer" sends you an authentication code to verify your email address.
Then you just enter the code and the file or folder you chose will be sent
to your recipient. You don't have to download anything. You can send files
or folders up to 2GB which is a pretty large file/folder.
If you want to transfer file from one device to another (like your tablet to
your PC), you could use Dropbox. You can get a free Dropbox account with 2
GB of space. Upload your files to your Dropbox account and put the Dropbox
app on your other devices. Once you do that, your files are available from
any of your devices. You can also share files from your Dropbox account by
sending your recipient a private link to download specific files. You can
get a free Dropbox account at https://www.dropbox.com/basic
It really depends on what you want to share, how many people you want to
share with, and how large the files are you want to share.
I'm not familiar with the downloadable versions of SendIt or Sendy.
Gary wants to know which of our services he should choose
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows 7. What would be the cost to
convert to Windows 10 and then move the existing files and programs on
to the Lap Top from my HP 10 so I could operate either computer if need
be? Darcy did this for me some years ago when he moved an obsolete
Windows XP to Windows 7 Thank You, Gary R.
Our answer
Hi Gary. If you want us to start the upgrade of Windows 10, then make
it look like Windows 7 that would require a Windows transformation key.
See this page. The cost
of this service is $49.00.
If you just want us to help you upgrade to Windows 10 but not make it
look and work like Windows 7, that would cost $25.
See this page
for more information.
Keep in mind when you upgrade to Windows 10, your files and programs
will still be on the laptop.
We do not move programs from one computer to another - there are
software programs that claim to do that, but we don't recommend it.
Attempting to move programs from one PC to another often ends up causing
problems. If you wanted us to move your files from your desktop to an
external drive and then from the external drive to the laptop (the
recommended way) that would be a standard computer care/repair key which
is $50. See this page.
To summarize: If you want us to help you upgrade Windows 7 to Windows
10, then make it look like Windows 7, and then copy your files from your
desktop to your laptop (via external drive) the total cost would be $99.
If you want us to do all of the above except make your Windows 10
upgrade look and work more like Windows 7, the total cost would be $75.
I hope this helps you, Gary. We look forward to helping you soon.
John was scammed while updating his GPS device
I was just in the process of updating my GPS when a chatbox opened to
ask what service I wanted. They then asked my phone number so that a
tech could walk me through the steps. They started to give me
instructions and then he said he found my computer address and he told
me I had 15 foreign companies also using my IP address. I said I knew
nothing about them. He asked me if I wanted them deleted. I said just
leave it. I wanted Cloudeight to check this out. He hung up. I’m not
sure what was going on so disconnected my computer. I have a Cloudeight
Direct Computer Care service key left Thanks, John.
Our answer
Hi John. The chat that opened was opened by an ad you clicked on. This
was an attempted scam. If you allowed someone to access your computer
(gave them permission) then you need to use your Cloudeight key to have
us go through your computer to make sure the didn't put any malicious
software on your computer or make any detrimental changes. If you didn't
give them permission to access your computer then you should be OK. But
I'm thinking if a chat opened up, then they were connected to you and
hence had the opportunity to make changes to your computer.
Legitimate companies do not connect to your computer unannounced and
they don't open up chat windows, they call you randomly. So it looks
like this was an attempt to scam you.
If you gave them a credit card number, you need to call the credit card
company immediately and tell them you've been scammed. You won't lose
any money if you do this right away
-------
Follow up from TC: I checked over John's computer thoroughly and
found no evidence of any tampering. The 15 "foreign companies" using his
IP address was just a scare tactic the scammer tried to use to scare
John into giving the scammer money. John was lucky!
Dennis is working from home and his work requires him to use a
browser that supports ActiveX
I am trying to access my work computer from my home computer. My work
computer requires that I have ActiveX on my home computer. Is there a
website where I can install ActiveX on this computer which is running
Windows 10 and IE 11? Thank you for any suggestions. Dennis.
Our answer
Hi Dennis. Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the only browser that fully
supports ActiveX controls and plug-ins. ActiveX is not something you
install on your PC. So if you need to use ActiveX, you will need to use
Internet Explorer. It comes with Windows 10. In IE 11 ActiveX is
disabled by default, so you'll need to turn it on.
See this Microsoft page to see how to enable ActiveX for all sites
or just certain sites.
If you want to use a more modern browser (Chrome or the new Edge), you can download
the IE Tab extension acts as an Internet Explorer emulator. However, we have not tested
it.. IE Tab claims that it allows you to "Display web pages using IE
within Chrome. Use Java, Silverlight, ActiveX, SharePoint, and more. A
"Top 10" extension since 2009!"
You can get more info about IE Tab and/or install it from this page.
I hope this helps you, Dennis.
Terry's Windows 10 computer randomly shuts down and restarts
Why does my Windows 10 computer running win 10 reboot on its own when no
updates were installed? Just out of the blue it will shut off and
restart on its own. I cannot figure it out.
Our answer
Hi Terry. If it reboots randomly it's almost always an overheating issue
either with your graphics card or your processor. If your computer has
fans, make sure they all working. If it's a laptop, make sure you are
using it on a hard surface or on a tablecloth or upholstered furniture.
If it's a desktop make sure that the tower is not pushed up against a
wall. Whether it's a laptop or desktop, make sure all vents are clean
and free of lint, dust, or dirt and make sure the device can get plenty
of ventilation.
If this does not help me, let me know, there are a few settings you can
change, that might work. It may also be a corrupt driver too. But honestly,
it's almost always overheating that causes random shutdowns.
Don wants to change his username and master password for LastPass
I can't get support for Last Pass. I get to where it says type your
question here and there is no place to type anything. Maybe you can tell
me how to contact them or answer my question which is: If I change a
name, user name or password in LastPass, will it change on the site
profile?
Thanks for your help, Don
Our answer
Hi Don, We don't have any relationship with LastPass... we just
recommend the program. We're not an affiliate or a reseller like we are
with Emsisoft so I don't have any contacts there. Once you change
your username and/or password for LastPass, it's changed everywhere - in
your browser extensions and on the LastPass and your site profile.
This will help
you if you want to change your username for LastPass (your username is your
email address) Log in to LastPass and access your Vault by doing either
of the following:
1. Go to https://lastpass.com/?ac=1 and log in with your username
and Master Password.
2. In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon LastPass
then click Open My Vault.
Select Account Settings in the left navigation.
Under Login Credentials, make your changes in the Account Email field.
Click Update.
Enter your Master Password, then click Confirm to save your changes.
And this is how to change your master password for LastPass
The Master Password to your LastPass account allows access to everything
in your account: all of your Sites, Form Fills, Secure Notes, and more.
There is no limit for character length of the Master Password, but it is
recommended that you use at least 12 characters and make sure you
remember it.
Log in to LastPass and access your Vault by doing either of the
following:
1. Go to https://lastpass.com/?ac=1 and log in with your username and
Master Password.
2. In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon LastPass then
click Open My Vault. Select Account Settings in the left navigation. On the General tab under Login Credentials, click Change Master
Password.
In the new web browser page or tab that opens, enter your current
password, then create a new Master Password. Enter a password hint
(recommended – this is a clue that is sent in a reminder email to help
you remember your Master Password if it is ever forgotten). When finished, click Save Master Password to save your changes. Once
updated, you will need to click the inactive LastPass icon to log in
once more to authenticate using your new Master Password.
I hope this helps you, Don.

Our Sweet 16 Search Tips and Tricks
All of these work with Google search. Some of them may work in other
search engines too.
- Use quotes to search for an exact phrase: Here’s a simple trick
that can help you narrow down your search results in a jiffy.
Searching for a phrase in quotes will return search results
containing the same words in the same order. This can save you time
if you’re looking for a particular phase.
- Use an asterisk in quotes to search for unknown or variable
words: Did you know you can search for a phrase when you’re not sure
of a word in phrase by using an asterisk to replace the unknown
word. For example, I just searched for: “Those who foolishly sought
power by riding the back of the * ” returned: “Those who foolishly
sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside ”
(JFK). Or “A ** in the hand is worth * in the * “. You know the
result for that.
- Use a minus sign to eliminate results containing certain words:
You can streamline your searches by using the minus sign to remove
those words from your search results. For instance: Search for
Lasagna recipes -meat sauce. Note the – minus sign is right next to
the word you want to eliminate – not a dash between the words. The
search for Lasagna recipes -meat sauce results in recipes for
lasagna which don’t include meat.
- Search specific websites for keywords: Use the “site:” function
(Google only) that searches only a specific website. For example, if
you want to see how many times North Korea was mentioned on CNN’s
web site, type “North Korea site:CNN.com”
- Search news archives all the way back to the mid-1880s: Google
News has a feature that lets you search back over 100+ years’ worth
of archived news from newspapers from around the world. Just visit
this page:
https://news.google.com/newspapers
- Use vs. to compare foods. Want to know the difference between
wheat and spelt? Type “wheat vs. spelt” in the search form. You’ll
get a comparison. Type in “quinoa vs. rice” and see what you get.
- Use search to give you definitions of words: For example:
“Define: Trenchant” (no quotes needed). You can even lookup slang.
Define: Booyah or Define: Bae.
- You can use the microphone icon on Google to search for anything
… or to flip a coin and/or give you a sweet love quote: Go to
https://www.google.com and click the microphone icon and say
“flip a coin” or “love quote”. If you’re shy you can type “flip a
coin” (no quotes) and get random heads or tails every time. Good for
solving arguments. I do this all the time with EB. Tails you lose,
heads I win.
- Play a game: That’s right you can play games using Google
search. Want to play solitaire? Open
Google search and type solitaire in the search box. Click play
to start the game.
- Use the tabs in Google search: On the top of every search,
you’ll see several tabs. Normally you’ll see Web, Image, News, and
More. Use these tabs to help define what kind of search you want to
do. If you’re looking for images, click the Image tab. If it’s news
you’re looking for, click the “News” tab. It’s so simple but many
people don’t even notice those tabs. They’re there to help you!
- Track a package: Copy and paste any tracking number into Google
search. It will automatically detect the carrier and track your
package.
- Check the weather: At your place or mine… or anywhere: Type in
Weather and your city, state, zip code, or city, country. Like this…
Weather Grand Cayman.
- Convert currency, measurements, and more: Try it. Type 600
gallons to liters. Or 600 US dollars to Australian dollars (USD to
AUD)...
- Books by Author: Do you want to see a list of books written by
your favorite author? OK. Fire up Google search and type Books by
_______ Of course, you’ll need to type the author’s name in the
blank, eh? Like this: Books by Stephen King.
- Find out what movies are playing near you: If your location on
your device is turned on just type Movies near me in Google search.
If you have your location turned off, type in Movies and your zip
code or your city, state, city, country… you get the idea. Here’s an
example: Movies 49333
- Find recipes: You don’t need no stinkin’ recipe toolbar. You
have Google search. Let’s make a Moscow mule. Just type Moscow mule
in Google search and the recipe is right there in front of your
soon-to-be bloodshot eyes:
- Or how about some Tzatziki? You guessed it! Just typeTzatziki in
Google search and you’ll have a plentiful choice of recipes:
Yesterday, I couldn’t spell tzatziki, now I can eat one… I mean some.
There are dozens of other search tricks you can use to help you find
whatever you’re looking for. These “sweet 16” will get you off to a good
start.
Be Careful! Don’t Fall for COVID-19 Scams
For everyone using the Internet
An Important Reminder to help you stay safe during the coronavirus
pandemic!
We received several emails yesterday with the subject line…
“Government Response to Coronavirus COVID-19” The email (spam)
appeared to have come from an organization called Natural
Disasters Monitoring (PAHO). The “from” address was
backoffice@pahofinity.xyz – which is a fake email address. The email
came with a malware attachment that, if opened, may allow remote
access to a PC. It also contained links that led to malware downloads
and counterfeit web sites.
So we want to remind you that scammers will use the COVID-19 pandemic
as an opportunity to steal your identity, your credit card numbers, your
personal information or even take money from your checking or savings
account.
Their method of choice will be to send unsolicited emails that appear
to come from a legitimate health care provider or a government website.
They may try to trick you into clicking a link in an email by tricking
you into thinking you will get coronavirus test kits, masks, hand
sanitizer or coronavirus cures.
These emails may also come with attachments which, if opened, may
compromise your computer and even allow hackers to access or control
your PC.
These emails may offer free or low-cost critical healthcare items or
services in exchange for your personal information, credit card numbers,
bank account numbers or your Medicare or Social Security Number.
You should view any unsolicited requests for any personal
information, or any offers of COVID-19 test kits, masks, hand sanitizer,
or cures as fraudulent and dangerous.
No one has home test kits to send you. No one has face masks to send
you. No one is going to send you scarce healthcare items…and no one has
a cure for the coronavirus at this time.
If you get any emails such as we describe above, delete the email
immediately. NEVER click links in and NEVER open any attachments that
come with unsolicited emails.
We want to keep you safe. At this critical time, you must stay calm
and informed. Your common sense and skepticism will help you stay
safe during this global pandemic.
As we’ve always told you…
DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS IN EMAIL UNLESS YOU ARE SURE OF WHO SENT
THEM, YOU WERE EXPECTING THEM, AND YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE.
AND ALWAYS…
Housekeeping Tip: Clean Up Your Downloads
Folder
Windows 10 (all versions)
Here’s a quick tip. This tip won’t make your computer run faster or
better. You can file this tip under "Good housekeeping".
Unless you changed the default folder for downloads in your
browser(s), when you download software, it goes into your Downloads
folder. Unless you downloaded a portable app after you install the
software, you don’t need the file you downloaded ( what we call the
“installer”). Yet most of us just allow all the software programs we
download to remain in the Downloads folder, even though we will probably
ever need them again.
So, today, right now, take a look in your Downloads folder. One quick
way to get there is to type the word Download in the taskbar search and
click on the “Downloads file folder” when it appears in the search
results. And, of course, you can get open the Downloads folder.
And you can also press Windows Key + E to open File Explorer and you’ll
see the Downloads folder in the Quick Access section. No matter how you
get there, get there and take a look. How many programs do you have
cluttering up that folder?
Do you really need the installer for programs you’ve already
installed? No. Will removing the program’s installer files from
Downloads remove the installed program from your computer? No. So, why
are most of our Downloads folders full of files? Eh?
If you want to clear out everything in your Downloads folder, open
the folder, press CTRL + A to select all, then press the Delete key. All
gone. If you only want to delete some of them, you can select one at a
time and delete them, or you can select several files once by holding
down the CTRL key and left-clicking to select any number of files. Once
you have all the files you want to delete selected, just tap the Delete
key.
Caveats: If you have a program installer that is no longer available
for download – or one that used to be free and is no longer fee, you
might want to save it to another folder – better yet save it to a USB
flash drive or external hard drive. If you have downloaded
software that did not require you to install it to run it (portable
programs/portable apps) if you delete them you won’t be able to run that
particular program. So you’ll want to avoid deleting them. And remember,
if you make a mistake and delete one of these kinds of programs/apps,
you can just re-download it.
And we know that each person is different. But we’ve seen hundreds of
computers with Downloads folders teeming with old files. Most of them
unnecessary. All they are doing is just, taking up space.
Humor us and take a look at your Downloads folder – you may be
shocked at what has accumulated there over time.
And that’s our good housekeeping tip for today.
How to Find Out if You Have Standard Hard Drives (HDDs) or Solid
State Drives (SSDs)
Right-click on the Windows 10 Start button. Click “Run”. In the Run box type
dfrgui and press Enter.
Look under “Media type”. Hard drives show up as “Hard disk drive” and Solid
State Drives (SSDs) show up as "Solid state drive".

Back to Plum Brook
In the tall winds, the seeds of old memories drift. On the updrafts and
downdrafts and the vortexes of the tall winds, the tiny fragments of our
lives float. Up and down and around they swirl, just below the veil of
consciousness they tumble in the tall winds, until once in a while, like
a nugget of gold in a raging river, they appear in our minds. We can
feel it, we can touch it, and we can see it without looking – without
eyes. A memory pushed up from the eternal lands by the endless currents
of the tall winds.
Maybe as the stress of living in a world besieged by an enemy that we
cannot see wears on us the mind looks for a break. A welcome escape. My
mind is troubled and my life has been so changed with all that is going
on that as if to provide a respite from this crazy world, my mind
constructed a better world.
Such an event happened to me last night. While I was drifting off to
sleep a memory floated into my mind, from where I do not know. And just
for those few moments, without opening my eyes or reaching out with my
hands or touching it to my tongue, I could feel it and see it and I
could taste it. A memory of a place and a time long gone – in a world, I
can only yearn for, yet as real as the keyboard on which I type.
It was October and the leaves were in their colors

Password Spraying
We'll tell you this: If we could spray your passwords and make them stronger
we'd be spraying your passwords right now. We have harped and harped and
prodded you about using strong passwords, because if you don't you're just
making it easy for criminals and miscreants to gain access to your accounts
- email accounts, bank accounts, credit card accounts, etc. Brute force
password attacks are on the wane, but password spraying is on the rise. And
if you use weak passwords, like helen1952 or 12345678, password,
candycane52, and so on, you're just cruisin' for a bruisin' we tells ya!
The following is from INFOSEC Institute:
"What is Password Spraying?
Password spraying refers to the attack method that takes a large number of
usernames and loops them with a single password. We can use multiple
iterations using a number of different passwords, but the number of
passwords attempted is usually low when compared to the number of users
attempted. This method avoids password lockouts, and it is often more
effective at uncovering weak passwords than targeting specific users.
Note: For the success of a password attack, a good password list is
essential. You can use certain tools like CEWL to generate target-specific
lists in accordance, using words from websites, or come up with your own
method. In the past, I have had a lot of success using MonthYear, welcome1,
and organization1 and also simple passwords like qwerty12345..."
