My stationery used to scroll and play music, then it quit working! What happened?
A quick review of how to use our stationery and how not to use it.
Question 1: Why doesn't your stationery scroll when I use it ?
Answer: First thing to check is to make sure you are following the correct three steps and using a compatible mail program. Keep in mind that you will not see it scrolling while you type a letter; check your sent box or your preview window, and if it is scrolling there, then you did it correctly! One of the most common mistakes we see are people choose the "New Mail" button or "format.". This will not work! You have to do as outlined on the help page. Our QuickNotes! do not scroll or play music, but they still must be used in the same way so that the margins and text color are automatically set. Make sure you are not using a QuickNote and mistaking it for a scrolling stationery!
Check your security settings in Outlook Express as they may be too high. Open your mail program and go to Tools, then Options, then choose the Security tab. You must be set to "Internet Zone." Click here for pictures to help guide you. If you send stationery to someone, and they say they cannot see it scrolling, refer them to this paragraph. In the same respect, if you send scrolling stationery to someone and they say they would rather it does not scroll, they can set their own settings so it won't! Neat huh!!
Note: Stationery can be received nicely by AOL users, but depending on security settings it may not be scrolling.
If you installed the Outlook security patch that restricts scripting, your stationery will not scroll. We use VbScripting for the scroll. You will have to contact Microsoft for information on how to re-enable the ability for VbScripting. We do not offer support on this. This only applies if you are using Outlook, not Outlook Express.
Attention Outlook users! If you are not going through a pop 3 mail service to use Outlook and are instead going through a LAN (Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) you will see either red "x" or the stationery will not scroll properly. Our stationery only works with Outlook and Outlook Express programs when they are set at their default settings with default pop3 mail protocol. Internet Mail Service does not provide support for VBScript which is used to make our stationery scroll. Also, you cannot use via MsWord!

Question 2: Why can't the person I send the email to see the scrolling stationery and/or hear the music?
Answer: The person has to be using Outlook Express or Outlook, or Vista Windows Mail to receive the mail correctly. Luckily millions use these email programs and anyone with Windows has Outlook Express or Windows Mail available to use. Those using other mail programs may see the background but it probably won't be scrolling; no matter who you send to, they will see your text though, while the picture/music may come as an attachment. If your friends complain that all they see is "red x", refer to Question #14. AOL users will receive your stationery nicely with the preset margins and contrast text color, but it will not be scrolling. Incredimail users will see your stationery, as well as most other html capable mail programs. Also, be sure YOU are sending it correctly! You have to follow the correct three steps to send stationery and quicknotes. For your convenience, we have made a page with pictures to guide you on how to download/install and use Cloudeight Stationery. Go to https://www.thundercloud.net/help/show-me.htm
Click here if you are NOT using Outlook or Outlook Express, or Vista Windows Mail email and want to SEND stationery! This will include AOL, Juno, Excite, Yahoo, New MSN Explorer, and other web based mail programs. Or refer your friends to this page, as it has a step by step tutorial for them to set up mail in Outlook Express. AOL users will receive your stationery nicely with the preset margins and contrast text color, but it will not be scrolling.
Sorry, but the stationery will not work for Mac users or WebTV as they do not support VB scripting which is needed for the stationery to work properly. Stationery will not work with Incredimail; our files are not to be modified for use in other mail programs; it can be received by them however.
Hotmail & Yahoo users must access their accounts via Outlook or Outlook Express; they cannot access via the web. Web based accounts such as Yahoo and Hotmail cannot receive the mail properly unless they are received in Outlook Express. If you have Gmail, you can set up Gmail in Outlook Express or Windows Mail so you can use email stationery.
Have your friend check security settings as they may be too high to allow for scrolling. Have them Open their mail program and go to Tools, then Options, then choose the Security tab. It must be set to "Internet Zone." Click here for pictures to help guide you.
Has your friend updated with new Windows XP2 or using Vista Windows Mail? If so, they need to enable images to be previewed with their mail. They can click to see it when you send the stationery, or they can set up their Outlook Express to always see images as explained on our SP2 page.

Question 3: My email scrolls but I cannot send the sound. What am I doing wrong?Answer: You must use the stationery in the correct manner. Remember, only Outlook Express and can properly embed sounds, as well as Vista Windows Mail. For your convenience, we have made a page with pictures to guide you on how to download/install and use Cloudeight Stationery. Go to https://www.thundercloud.net/help/show-me.htm
If you are using an outdated 4.72 version of Internet Explorer/Outlook Express or if you are using Outlook 98/2000/2002, the sound will not work! Stationery does not work at all in Outlook 2007.If you are interested in the details please click here.
Another reason you may be having problems is if you changed the default installation directory; you cannot change the directory the stationery extracts to. If you've changed the installation directory you will need to go back and move all the midi/wav files to their original folder. It may be easier for you just to reinstall the stationery and let it install to the default directory.
If you installed your Windows to a drive other the the default "C" drive, the music will not play as the folder is in the wrong location! Some who installed Windows XP choose to keep their old windows on C drive, and set up XP on "D" or another drive. Finally, be sure you did not change the name of the mid (sound) file, or it will not work!
Still having problems with sound? If the problem is that YOU cannot hear sound, click here for a troubleshooting page to assist you!

Question 4: Why is it that when I type my email on your stationery the text writes over the picture? It means you are not following the three steps or you are not using Outlook, Outlook Express or Vista Windows Mail. If you are not using the stationery as outlined on our help page, your margins will not be preset for you. Again we ask that you please visit our help page. Keep in mind that our QuickNotes! must be used the same way as the stationery so that they, too, will have preset margins. All Cloudeight stationery has preset margins. For your convenience, we have made a page with pictures to guide you on how to download/install and use Cloudeight Stationery. Go to https://www.thundercloud.net/help/show-me.htm
If using Windows Live, be sure you are installing the files for Windows Live. We just started providing stationery for Windows Live near the end of 2010.
If you are sure you are sending correctly, but the recipient complains the text is covering the picture, then it means they are using an incompatible mail program. We have seen this with WebTv users; if you still want to send them stationery, just have them highlight the text in the letter when it arrives, and click their tab key to move the writing off from the picture. More on compatible mail programs can be found on Question #2 of FAQ.

Question 5: What is the difference in standard and advanced and Vista Windows Mail Version?
Advanced (also known as Outlook Express version) collection stationery is stationery exactly like the standard installation, except that it creates a new directory (folder) in which to install itself. Only users of Outlook Express can use this feature. Each collection will be in its own folder for ease of selection in a new directory called "cloudeight.". Quicknotes install to a folder called "quicknotes."
The reason users of Outlook cannot use this feature is because they do not have the capability to browse when choosing a stationery. As far as appearance and sound there is no difference. Please visit our advanced install page for more information.
All of our collections are available as advanced install except for our Special Occasions, which are only available as individual downloads and our Mail List Members only "Occupations" Quicknotes 37 collection.
Vista Windows Mail users must download the correct file. If you try to install the standard/advanced version, it will not install and you will get an error that it cannot install. We have updated several hundred stationery to work with Vista Windows Mail but we are only making full collection downloads for Vista. You must install the file for the full collection; individual stationery choices will not work. We hope to have all collections updated for Vista within the year.

Question 6: How do I uninstall your stationery?
In Windows Live Mail, just go to Documents, My Stationery, and delete the ones you don't want.
Outlook Express/Windows Mail, Simply go to the default stationery directory in your Windows Explorer (My Computer) at C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\stationery and delete any that you do not wish to keep. You can safely delete anything in this folder without fear of interfering with the Outlook/Outlook Express mail programs. Each stationery consists of three parts, a jpg (picture), a mid (sound) and the htm file (web page-holds the scripting). Most all selections share a common prefix for easy identification. Note: Quicknotes consist of two files only as they do not have music. Click here for a pictureYou can delete directly from your "Select Stationery" Window, from Outlook Express too. Just highlight the stationery or folder you want to remove and click your delete button.
When you install our stationery, it actually just places those files in the stationery directory for you. No changes are made to your system, its registry, nor your mail program. Removing the files from the stationery directory completely removes all traces from your system. Still seeing a deleted stationery listed when you choose "New Message Using?" It will disappear as soon as you use a few stationery; it does not mean the stationery is still there. Many Microsoft programs show the "last" few things you used, as is the case with their mail programs too!
If you have not tried our advanced install option, perhaps you would be interested as that option actually creates a separate folder for each collection. This makes it very easy to pick and choose, and if you do not want a collection you can simply delete its folder! If you want to delete part of a collection, it is much easier to do as well. More information on the advanced install option can be found by clicking here! Remember, only users of Outlook Express can use this feature.Click here to return to top of page
Question 7: I am using Vista Windows Mail. Why do I get an error "Cannot create file c:/program files/common files/microsoft shared/stationery when I try to install a stationery?
You must install the file specifically for Vista. If you try to install the advanced or standard version you will get the above error. Also, single stationery selections are not available for Vista; you must install the full collection. We have updated several hundred stationery for Vista and hope to have all of them done by the end of the year.Click here to return to top of page
Question #8: Can I use email stationery with Windows Live/Windows 7?
Using Windows 7/Windows Live? We have just started making stationery for Windows Live with self installer. Click here for more assistance.

Question 9: Is there a way to send without sound?
If you don't want the sound, the easiest way to keep it off is to go to the default directory (C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\stationery) where the stationery extracts to and just delete all files with the ending (extension) ".mid" Now, when you go to send a stationery, you will get a notice "one or more pictures cannot be found." Choose to send anyway. It is only looking for the mid file (the script does not understand the difference between a picture and a sound file). The recipient will receive the stationery fine, without the music, and no error messages. If you are using plain Outlook, the sound does not work anyway, so you would not need to do this. Sound only works in Outlook Express.
Other options are: Chose View, when composing an email, and check Source Edit. Now you will see three tabs at the bottom of the mail you are writing. Click "Source" and edit out the coding for the music (is always at the top and is easy to see which is the coding for music). The music coding begins <bgsound src=" and ends with a > symbol; or, click "Format" "Background" "Sound" and erase the command line entry. Do not delete other things here or it will mess up that particular mail! Finally, don't forget our QuickNotes! They are non-scrolling and non-musical.

Question 10: When I install the stationery, it says "3 files extracted".. what does this mean?
Each individual stationery consists of three files: a jpg (picture), a mid (music) and an htm (webpage with the scripting for the scroll). "Extract" means those three files were copied to the correct folder so that you can use them as stationery. If you seen the words "extracting to"... then it means you have properly installed the stationery. If you install an entire collection, you may see "24 files extracted", depending on how many selections are in a downloaded collection. Each Quicknote consists of two files: a jpg (picture) and an htm (webpage)

Question 11: I get an error "one or more pictures cannot be found".. what does this mean?
You cannot change the directory that it installs to automatically or you will get the error "one or more pictures cannot be found." The reason for the error is because the scripting is directing the program to look for the mid (music) file in a specific location. If it is not where it is supposed to be, the error comes up. You can still send the stationery that way, and the recipients will not get the error; they will not get the sound either, though, as it cannot embed.
If you installed your Windows to a drive other the the default "C" drive, you will get this warning, as the folder is in the wrong location! Some who installed Windows XP choose to keep their old windows on C drive, and set up XP on "D" or another drive. Finally, be sure you did not change the name of the mid (sound) file or jpg (picture), or you will get this error!

Question 12: Can I move the stationery to a different directory or store on CDROM, or rename them?
Windows Live: Yes, you can move the single file that extracted to "Documents, My Stationery, Cloudeight" to any folder on your computer.
Other Downloads: We warn on download pages and throughout our files that you cannot change directory or the stationery will not work. What will happen is you will get the warning "one or more pictures cannot be found" (see Question 11). If you don't care if sound is included, you can do this. Just be sure you move the htm with the jpg file so they stay in the same folder. Note: You cannot rename stationery files or your stationery will not work! You may not even be able to see the picture!
It is safe to move Quicknotes to a new folder since they do not have music. You may find this especially useful for a collection such as Quicknotes 37 "Occupations" collection. Many people find it useful to rename the Quicknotes collections to a name they are able to recognize. For example, you can rename the Quicknotes folder to any name you want, such as Quicknotes 32, which creates a folder called Quicknote32.. you can rename it Fantasy and Fairies or any name you want! More on moving/renaming Quicknotes can be found on our Quicknotes Tips page. Click here!
If you want to move stationery just to "organize" you may want to review our Advanced version downloads as these make separate folders for each collection. This makes things very organized for you! See Question #5, above, for more on this!
NOTE: See question #22 below for help on saving your installed stationery so you can reinstall after a format.
Note: If you are using a non-English version of Outlook 2003 and prior, you will have to move to that language's default directory since there is no browse feature in Outlook. This is ok since you cannot send sound with Outlook anyway. If you are using a non-English version of Outlook Express (OE), there is no need to move the files; you can just follow the correct three steps for use and browse to the folder where they auto extract to (C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\stationery). Remember, if you change the location of the files you will lose the ability to embed sound in your Outlook Express program.
NOTE: Stationery does not work in Outlook 2007 and newer due to the fact it must be used via MSWord.

Question 13: Can I print the stationery on paper to use as regular stationery? Our stationery is meant to be used electronically via email only. We do not offer support on printing. Many of our artists have given us permission to use their art in our email stationery, not to be printed.
Also, when attempting to print either the stationery or an email that came on stationery, some printers will print out several pages of the "picture." It varies depending on individual printer settings. If you want to print a letter you received, copy it to notepad and print, or "resend" it to yourself as plain text so you can print.

Question 14: Why can't I see pictures or why do I (or my recipients) see a Red "X"?
If you see a RED X instead of a picture in the preview (only applies if you updated your windows to SP2)click here and make sure you allow images to be previewed as explained in Step I. Also, be sure you make sure "send images with pictures" is checked. See below for instructions. NOTE: All Cloudeight Stationery is fully compatible with XP2. There are many home page and small stationery sites using various scripts that do NOT work, so be sure you are not trying to troubleshoot these selections from others as there is nothing you can do to fix the issue with those!
Otherwise, refer to the troubleshooting information below:
If you or someone at your computer changed an important setting in your mail program or installed a program that changes settings, people you send stationery to will see a red X instead of the pictures or stationery. Go to Tools, then Options. Now click:
- Send Tab, then
- Mail Sending Format: HTML Setting, then
- .... make sure the "Send with Pictures" box is checked
Another cause of this is that the jpgs (pictures) were moved from the file they extracted to; simply move them back. Or the files were renamed; if so, revert back to their original name.
Also, many who have installed and/or removed Hotbar have reported this program disables their ability to send pictures or stationery! See Question #20 below for help.
Note! If you installed Stationery Central to your system, their program makes major changes to your mail program and your system registry, rendering all other stationery useless. Even the stationery that comes with your Outlook Express will no longer work. Click here for help on how to put your system back as it should be.
Attention Outlook 98/2000/2002/XP-03 users! If you are not going through a pop 3 mail service to use your Outlook 2000 and are instead going through a LAN (Internet Mail Service (5.5.2650.21) you will see either red "x" or the stationery will not scroll properly. Our stationery only works with the Outlook 98/2000/2002 and Outlook Express programs when they are set at their default settings with default pop3 mail protocol. Internet Mail Service does not provide support for VBScript which is used to make our stationery scroll. Also, you cannot use via MsWord!

Question 15: Problems with download and other errors (Corrupt/Server Reset/Timed Out/Page Cannot be Found/Insufficient Data) ... what does this mean?
If you get a "corrupt" or "insufficient data" warning, it means the file did not download completely and you will have to delete the one you have and redownload. Losing a single byte during data transfer from the web to your computer can cause this. It does not happen very often, but when it does it is usually because of a busy server, your ISP is timing out, or web congestion.
Server Reset/Time Out means that the connection you have to our site has been slowed down and had to be "reset" by your ISP to keep from losing the connection. This can be caused by a slow connection on your end, or a busy router or trunkline between you and our server. Sometimes this will happen when the entire web itself is experiencing heavy traffic, or if a major trunk line is down that you may have to go through to get to us. Just try again later if this happens, or click the "refresh" button in your browser.
"Page cannot be found" or "you are not authorized to view this page" means that our site may be temporarily unavailable. Just try again in an hour or so and see if you can access pages. We do not require any kind of sign-in or password for any pages on our site; "you are not authorized to view this page" just means the page is not available. Another cause could be you typed in the wrong web page address; check spelling :)
Having a problem downloading a file? If you cannot download, please review our "How to Download" page; it not only covers basics on downloading, but it covers information on downloading errors.

Question 16: Can I use your stationery as a webpage background on my home page or small business page?
Cloudeight gives permission to use our stationery as webpage backgrounds with the exception of those that are copyright by a particular artist. We have a page of banners you can use to link back to our site to give credit, or you can provide a text link back to us. Banners can be downloaded from https://www.thundercloud.net/banners We thank you for your support of Cloudeight and drop us a line so we can stop by and visit! Be sure you upload the images you wish to use to your own webspace as opposed to directly linking to the jpg on our site.
If a page is copyright by an individual artist, you can write to the artist and ask permission. Many allow this if you ask, as long as you include a link giving them credit. We cannot give you permission to use any stationery as a webpage background that is made from a copyrighted image. If an artist does give you permission, we do request you include a link to our site giving credit as well.
Also, we do recommend you do not use the scrolling script with a web page background since they are not viewable by Netscape users. This, of course, is a personal choice.

Question 17: I installed the stationery, now I cannot find it!
Windows Live: Look in Documents, My Stationery.
Other programs: First off, please review our download page and make sure you downloaded as we recommend for ease of set up and automatic installation. To review the download instructions, complete with pictures to help, click here! All selections in a collection share a common prefix; make sure you are looking for the correct prefix! Note: Quicknotes all start with the common prefix "qn." Some stationery collections have the common prefix using the name of the artist, or the collection itself. You may need to return to the download page to see what name was given.
If you still cannot find it, perhaps you are not using Outlook or Outlook Express? If this is the case, you will have to use one of these mail programs to use email stationery. Otherwise, it may mean you are not going about using the stationery correctly. We have a wonderful step by step instruction page for Outlook Express users. Click here!
If you are sure you did exactly as shown, make sure you have not installed the "advanced" version. If you did, you will have to browse to that folder. Click here for more information on Advanced Vs Standard. It is important to note that you cannot use advanced option if you are using Outlook, as Outlook does not have a "browse" feature. Advanced option is for Outlook Express only.
All of our files automatically extract to the proper directory when installed. If you just downloaded the exe file, without installing, you won't be able to find the stationery! Be sure to download/install as shown on our "How to Download" page.
Have you recently installed a new OS so that Windows is no longer on your C drive? Since only very advanced users install Windows to a drive other then C drive, all of our stationery defaults to C Drive. If you installed Windows to a drive other then C, please refer to Question #12 above
Refer to Question #12 above for other troubleshooting for this.

Question 18: I am using a Non-English Version of Outlook/Outlook Express; can I still use the stationery?
If you are using a non-English version of Outlook, you will have to move to that language's default directory since there is no browse feature in Outlook.

Question 19: My stationery used to scroll and play music, then it quit working! What happened?
Our stationery is not a program, and when you "install" it, all you are actually doing is extracting the files to your stationery folder so they will be there when you want to use one. No changes are made to your system, your registry, nor your mail program. As such, stationery cannot start or stop working; it means you have changed either the way you are using it or a setting on your mail program. Please review our Help page and make sure you are following the EXACT three steps shown!
Other things to consider:
Have you moved the stationery files to a different folder? If so, it will not longer work! You cannot move the files. Have you renamed the files? If so, it will no longer work.
Remember, you won't see scrolling while typing an email; to see if it is scrolling, check your sent folder or check your Preview tab Also, be sure you are not using a Quicknote as they do not scroll. (See Question #14 above)
Have you recently upgraded to Windows XP or Outlook Express 6.0? If so, your security settings may be too high. Open your mail program and go to Tools, then Options, then choose the Security tab. You must be set to "Internet Zone." Click here for a picture to help guide you.
Are you sure you are NOT using the "New Mail" button or format? If so, the stationery will not work!
Finally, have you recently installed a new Virus Protection program? If so, make sure you did not set restrictions so high that you disallow even harmless scripts from working.
If you are using Outlook 2000/2002 and install the advanced security settings that disable VbScripting, it may disable your ability to use scrolling stationery (we use VbScript to make the stationery scroll). You would have to contact Microsoft for assistance on this problem.

Question #20: Is there a way to send my stationery so it does not scroll?
You have quite a few options. First, if you just don't like the scrolling stationery, check out our Quicknotes and/or our Funletters. These are all non-scrolling and there are hundreds of choices as well as dozens of categories for most any occasion and event. Keep in mind you must still follow the same three steps for using Quicknotes and Funletters, as you do for our regular scrolling stationery, so that your margins are preset for you.
Another option is to set your email so it is set to "Restricted Zone" as this will disallow the scrolling on your end. Open your mail program and go to Tools, then Options, then choose the Security tab. Set to Restricted Zone. Click here for pictures to help guide you. If you send the stationery to someone they will see the scrolling if their system is set to Internet Zone. If they do not want scrolling, you can direct them to this instruction so they can set their mail up to Restricted Zone.
Question #21: I am going to be formatting my computer and wanted to save all my installed stationery so I can still have it on my new setup. Is this possible?
You can do this, but it is very important that you copy the file to the exact same location it was. To be more specific, when you install stationery, it installs to C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\stationery (also makes subdirectories in this folder if you installed advanced option). If you copy the entire "stationery" folder to a CD or floppy, you can then copy it back to that exact same folder when you format.
We recommend you reference Question #12 above as it covers more on moving the files and may help you with the move too.
Question #22: Why do I see a red X when I try to preview my stationery when composing new mail since installing SP2.
It is a simple setting change. Click here for instructions on proper setup.
Finally a quick review of how to use our stationery and how not to use it.
You cannot click "New Mail" or "FORMAT APPLY STATIONERY" when using our stationery as it will ruin the formatting. You must click 'Message' 'New Message Using' 'Select Stationery' and browse to the stationery you wish to use. (These instructions are for Outlook Express 5 and 6, but similar methods are used for Outlook 98/2000/2002). Full details are available on our help page at https://thundercloud.net/help

Outlook Express 5 and 6 Tip!
You don't have to wait until you send your email to preview the scrolling effect if you enable your edit/source/preview tab. All you have to do when you're in the compose window (the window you are typing your letter in) is click "View" and select "Source Edit" (you'll see a check mark appear next to it when you have selected it). Now you'll see 3 tabs at the lower left hand corner of your compose window:
