How to Get Free Credit Reports Weekly Through April 2021
All three American credit reporting agencies are offering free weekly credit reports for through April 2021 to help Americans keep close tabs on financial health during the current worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has increased exponentially the number of scams as criminals try to turn this tragedy into a monetary windfall. Keep a close eye on your credit reports is an excellent way to quickly discover fraudulent or incorrect charges and/or missed payments that could negatively affect your credit score.
There are going to be a huge number of inaccuracies that will show up on credit reports over the coming months. Taking advantage of free credit reports is an opportunity for you to see monitor your credit reports and spot problems early. The sooner you see a problem, the sooner you can do something to get the error corrected.
There are two areas unique to the current world situation that bear scrutiny:
Mortgage forbearance
Many mortgage lenders are offering mortgage forbearance, but there have been a lot of reports where missed mortgage payments are being reported to credit agencies even though the borrowers had petitioned the lender for mortgage forbearance. Find out if your lender reported the missing payment and correct it so it does not affect your credit score.
Credit card payment holidays
If your credit card company is offering you the chance to skip a payment (payment holiday) for the next billing cycle. Checking your credit report weekly can alert you if your credit is getting dinged for missing a payment even though the credit card company agreed to a payment holiday.
How to Get Your Weekly Free Credit Report
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are already required by law to make one free copy of your credit report available annually. Now, because of the pandemic, all three are offering free weekly credit reports.
