Microsoft Will Force Users to Upgrade to Windows 10 Version 2004

Cloudeight Windows 10 tips

If you’re using Windows 10 Version 1809 or Version 1903, heads up! Microsoft is going to make an offer you can’t refuse. What’s the offer? Windows 10 Version 2004 (May 2020 update). Microsoft is going to force upgrade those using Windows versions approaching their end of support dates. Currently, those versions are 1809 will be no longer be supported after November 10, 2020, and Version 1903 which be unsupported after December 8, 2020.

Those of you using Windows version 1809 (October 2018 Update) should be aware that a forced update is coming. It may be to your advantage to start the upgrade at a time of your own choosing rather than being surprised when Microsoft does it for you.

This also applies to those of you who are using Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019 Update). While you have more time than those using version 1809, your day of reckoning is coming soon. It may be better for you to take the bull by the horns and do the upgrade manually, than letting Microsoft force it on you at whatever time they decide.

Here’s what Microsoft says:

“Using the machine learning-based (ML-based) training we have done so far, we are increasing the number of devices selected to update automatically to Windows 10, version 2004 that are approaching end of service.”

So, if you’re using Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018 Update) or Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019 update), you have a choice to make:

Take control and update manually or let Microsoft update your device for you.

If you are using Windows 10 version 1809 or 1903 and you want to control when Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update) is installed on your computer, visit this page and click on the “Update now” button.

NOTE: This is not a recommendation from us to install Windows 10 version 2004. This is to warn you that Microsoft is going to force those using Windows 10 versions 1809 and 1903 to upgrade soon.

This is what I see when I go to my Updates:
The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. Once it’s ready for your device, you’ll see the update available on this page.
I don’t know if this means I’ll get it or if my PC can’t get it.

There is a large percentage of computers that MS considers not compatible with the upgrade. It’s much more likely the upgrade is not compatible with a large number of computers than it is that a large number of computers are not compatible with the upgrade. Meaning that MS has to fix the upgrade, not the millions of people need new computers.

I realize that I will have tooo upgrade one way or the other. But I do not understand the difference between doing it myself or MS doing it. The end result is the same, the upgrade will take place. Will something different happen if MS does it ?

If you do it yourself you choose the day and the time. if you let MS do it can happen any time. As far as the end result – it’s the same.

I see the same as Joyce Linsenmeyer on an older Dell laptop.

Is that a driver issue or some other compatibility fix we are waiting on, or not going to happen. Basically as Joyce Linsenmeyer said.

I cannot answer this because I don’t know what MS is going to do about the large percentage of people who’s machines are not compatible with the upgrade. I can only assume MS will fix this soon, but I don’t know anything for sure.

Yes, I just wanted to see if there was something you had heard that we had not. This is one of those times to walk away and not start trying to fix things that are not broken “guessing” in my opinion. It is easy to want to start updating drivers etc. when you don’t know what is wrong and make a mess of your computer.

Microsoft will fix the compatibility issue eventually or someone out there will get tired of waiting and start telling what the hold-ups are.

        Thanks for replaying infoave…D.

Hi TC and EB. Your post of June 17 “ Windows 10 May 2020 Update is Turning Into Another Update Disaster”
says DO NOT check for updates and DO NOT click the downloads and install link. So what to do? It’s going to happen anyway. Hopefully the bugs will be ironed out. So, wait and let it install automatically when Microsoft wants to do it or do it manually ahead of time when notification comes? So do we use the media creation tool NOW and put it on a USB or DVD? Totally new territory for me. Thanks for all your help.

It will be forced on you whether you want it or not. Installing the update using the Update assistant at least gives you control over “when”. You do not have to make a USB or DVD to update using the Update assistant.

So once again we will all have to suffer through an unproven update. My update history shows that it tried to update to this new version and it failed. Maybe thats good news. My next computer operating system will be Apple if I live long enough!!!

So now I’m wondering “when” would be a good time?? Any suggestions…sooner rather than later after the notification comes?? So the Update Assistant lets me choose but sooner rather than later won’t make a difference anyway?? So we are doomed no matter what? I’ve got 1903. Sounds like a death knell to me either way. I just hope it goes well or another trip to the computer fixit guy.

How do I know if Windows 10 version 2004 is installed? I checked my update history and it says ‘Cumulative update for Windows 10 version 2004 for x64-based systems (KB 84566782)’ installed on 8/14/20, but my system information says Windows Pro 10, Version 10.0.19041, Build 19041. Is that the version for 2004? Thank you!
