Elevated Command Prompts – How to add one to your start menu

By | June 1, 2011

You can use this tip on Windows Vista  and Windows 7 both 32bit and 64bit versions. Now with that out of the way…

We’re going to show you how to add a Run Command to your start menu and configure it in such a way that you will have elevated privileges whenever you use it and avoid the UAC warnings and prompts. This saves you time and keeps you from being annoyed by UAC. Best of all, it’s easy to do.

Here’s how you do it:

Click Start and type CMD in the Search box. This should produce one result: the shortcut to the Windows Command Processor, CMD

Right-click on the CMD shortcut and choose “Pin to Start Menu”.

Click Start again. Right-click the Command Prompt shortcut you just added above and choose “Properties”.

Click the Advanced button and click to select the “Run as administrator” checkbox.

Click OK to save your changes.

Windows 7 users can also add the Run Command to the Taskbar. If you choose this option, you’ll have to right-click on the icon and choose “Run as Administrator” each time you use it.

The tips that you give us are the greatest , how much time do you spend on the PC to get it all working properly, I am sure all you send and tell us about has been done by your staff and they work. But if you are traveling with your personal lap top is there a problem , I dont have a lap top but would like to get one so when traveling is it safe.
Thank for all you do for us.

I love this newsletter and can usually figure out your tips with no problem. I may need help this time. This tip for pinning the CMD to the start menu worked fine but I couldn’t see how to permanently add the ‘run as administrator’ under properties. The only Advanced tab I see is under the General tab & is for Attributes – File Attributes and Encrypt or Compress attributes. Am I missing something? I know I can right click CMD and just hit ‘Run as administrator’ every time but it would be nice to save a ‘click.’ Thank you!

@ Barb – There is an ‘advanced’ button on the ‘Shortcut’ tab.

Oh boy, I’m sorry I just don’t see it. I have Vista Business and when I pin to start menu, it doesn’t appear to be a shortcut and adding it as a shortcut doesn’t seem to be an option. When I right click there is no Shortcut tab. There is a Compatibility tab with a ‘run as administrator’ option but everything under that tab is grayed out.
Voila! I sent a shortcut of CMD to the desktop then right clicked and saw Advanced under the shortcut tab. I checked ‘run as administrator’ then right clicked again and pinned to start menu. That worked. Weird, huh?

Sounds to me that you are logged in to Windows with a restricted account.
