One In Four Americans Owns A Tablet, Overtaking E-Readers, As Printed Book Consumption Continues To Decline: Pew

By | December 27, 2012

Adding to Windows woes, the growth of tablets computer continues while PC sales remain flat. Printed books continue to decline while E-books continue to soar. Printed books and Windows 8 had little impact on the Christmas shopping season, as tablet, e-reader and smartphone sales bulldozed PC sales again. Microosoft, while still number one in PC sales is a very minor player in the tablet and smart phone market, and it doesn’t look as if that trend will change much in the new year.

According to an article at Techcrunch http://goo.gl/PXyOQ

“…We’re still waiting to hear from specific companies like Amazon with their latest (non-)numbers on how well their Kindle line of devices has sold over this holiday period, and from the various analysts that track overall device sales and shipments (but we’ve had a few indications that sales will be strong). But in the meantime, some research out today from the Pew Research Center on e-reading sheds some light on how the key U.S. market appears to be moving: specifically, ownership of tablets like the iPad has overtaken ownership of e-reading devices like the Kindle, with the number of people using both continuing to rise…”

Almost everyone I know has an E-reader or tablet. And everyone but me in our home has a laptop. I guess I am old fashioned, but I still love my desktop and I still love real books. While the idea of an E-reader intrigues me, I am not clamoring to get one. I don’t travel much and when I do, internet service is not available anyway while camping. I know the day is coming when desktops will be no more. But until then I am very happy being electronically challenged. 🙂

I would love to try out a tablet, cell phone, etc., but, lo and behold I have no service other than dial up internet! I want to become unstuck from my desk so plan to get a laptop – so at least I can move around and take it places…but I love real books and paper and pens and ink and bind books and make homemade paper and my own dyes so I don’t have a lot of time for all that other technology anyway. A neighbour, in bed, recently put his elbow or some such through their reader and now are waiting to find out where/how to repair it. That never seems to happen to the tomes I read!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR CLOUDEIGHT and THANK YOU for everything you do for all of us. XO T.
