How to run an elevated command prompt in Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8

Wow! We opened up a big can of worms with our tip on what your computer stores about your Web browsing — and not just the stuff your browsers store in temp files. It seems some of our friends using Vista ( and maybe other versions of Windows, although we found on Windows 7 no elevation was needed) cannot run a simple IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS or IPCONFIG /DISPLAYDNS  without administrator privileges. Well, sorry Vista friends, we don’t have a Vista computer handy. We have XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, but no Vista.

But anyway, running a command prompt with admin privileges isn’t hard to do. In Vista and Windows 7:

1. Type CMD into the start menu search box

2. When it appears at the top of the search results (it will be a little black icon) right-click it and choose Run As Adminstrator.

3. Now you can run your IPCONFIG /DISPLAYDNS or IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS commands ( or any other command which requires it ) with elevated privileges.

For Windows 8

Type CMD on the start screen – Windows search will show the Command Processor icon (still small and black). Right-click on the CMD icon and choose “Run as administrator”.

I have Vista, and have done it several times, just the last time was a few minutes ago, 8/13 @ 9:30pm EST. I’ve not had any problem, just type in what is necessary and click enter, and it shows or flushes very nicely. Since I have Cyber Ghost, it really only shows ads that have been on pages that I’ve looked at. Nothing more.
