Having trouble upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1? You are not alone

The following article appeared in the Seattle Times on Friday October 25, 2013. We wanted to share this with you, in case you are one of those having problems with the upgrade — or one of those thinking about upgrading your Windows 8 computer to Widnows 8.1.

Windows 8 update bombing? Sounds like a driver conflict

Some Windows 8 users are reporting trouble updating to Windows 8.1, and Patrick Marshall suspects Microsoft’s own driver programs are the problem.

Q: We have two computers, each with Windows 8. I installed 8.1 on one with no problem, although it took a surprisingly long time. The second, however, failed during the first of several restarts required to complete the installation.

A helpful Microsoft tech worked with my computer remotely for about two hours until the installation seemed to be progressing successfully. However, it failed again before completion and reverted to the original Windows 8.

Another Microsoft rep told me that others are having the same issue and to try again “in the future,” when they have fixed the problem. I’ve got better things to do. Any thoughts?…

    I have windows 8 and was ready to download and install 8.1, however I had to ring Dell about something else and mentioned I wanted to install windows 8.1. The tech’ told me to wait for a few days because there were problems with the installation. You have just confirmed this, so thank you – I will be patient and wait a few more days before downloading and installing it.

    I was able to download windows 8.1 but I have a problem with it restarting without any warning and sometimes I get a thing saying that the device driver has failed. Is that the type of thing that is happening with some people?

    Sorry to hear of these problems. Updated to Windows 8.1 10/24, no problems to report. Went quicky and smoothly.

    I upgraded with no problem and have connected remotely to tweak a few things (mail, start button, antivirus) on quite a few customers who have upgraded to 8.1 without a problem. Here is some info that may help some of you though:

    Keep in mind you get 90 days free support from Microsoft when you buy a computer with Windows 8, or if you purchase the upgrade. They will assist you. Be sure you call Microsoft official number from your order form or box/packaging as many scammers make their search link look like they are Microsoft. Here is page on the web: http://support.microsoft.com/

    Log in to your Microsoft account. If you don’t have one, create it. They will then determine your eligibility for free assistance. Here is what they say once you are logged in:

    Send your Microsoft Product Info to your agent.
    You may be eligible for free support. We can run a quick program to scan for Microsoft products on your computer. It’s simple for us and makes it easy on you. The scan is safe and secure, only takes a few seconds, and can help us diagnose your question faster. Just click the Accept button below, and a pop-up window will appear asking you to run or save the program.

    Most browsers: Click Save and then Run, and the program will take care of the rest.

    Internet Explorer 9 or Internet Explorer 10: Click Run and the program will take care of the rest.

    It’s that easy!

    I have connected to Microsoft’s free support, had them connect to me remotely, and talked to their agents. The wait was short, and the service was thorough from my personal experience.

    I upgraded with no problems. However, they hid many of my files and locating them has been the real challenge! And we used to be able to switch users but now have to sign out before switching.
