Many people, especially those with Windows 7, have trouble installing Windows Updates. There are a few things you can try to get your Windows Updates working again. Keep in mind that Microsoft’s ultimate sage advice to fix Update issues is to reinstall Windows. It’s kind of like cutting off your hand because you cut your finger — you know what I mean. It fixes your finger pain but, ya know…
These are suggestions. They are not magical fixes. They may work, they may not. You should try them. If they don’t work, you may have to reinstall Windows to fix you Windows Update issues — OK? Windows Update problems, especially with Windows, can be complex and not easy to fix. The suggestions below have worked for us on some computers — but they don’t work on all Windows Updates problems. If they don’t work for you, at least you tried.
1. Go to Control Panel/Windows Updates and click “Change settings”, it’s there in the left pane. Uncheck “Install recommended updates…” these could be anything from drivers to a new waffle iron – you don’t need them. Close Windows Updates, and reboot. Now try updating your computer.
2. Turn Off Windows Updates
That’s right! Turn them off and you’ll never have a problem installing Windows Updates again! We are just kidding. Turn off Windows Updates. Restart your computer. Go back to Windows Updates, Change Settings and turn it back on. Then restart your computer again. Now try Windows Updates.
3. Run the Microsoft Net Framework Repair Tool (Version 2)
Microsoft has released version 2 of the Microsoft .NET Framework repair tool. This tool addresses frequently observed issues that may cause failures for installations of the .NET Framework. Version 2 also adds offline support for computers that have limited or no Internet connectivity.
Version 2 of the .NET Framework repair tool is available for download from the following Microsoft Download Center website:
