What To Do If You Don’t See The Upgrade To Windows 10 App

If you’re anxiously waiting for Windows 10 (release date set for July 29, 2015) then it’s likely you try to keep up with the latest news about the new OS. Today, the internet is buzzing with news of a new app called Upgrade to Windows 10 that has ‘magically’ appeared to help them reserve a copy of the new OS when it becomes available. That said, some of you might not be seeing this new app. If that’s the case, here are a few things you can try.

Check For Updates

If you’ve set Windows to not check for updates, even important ones, it may be one of the reasons you aren’t seeing the Upgrade to Windows 10  app. It appeared on users’ systems as part of an update, update KB3035583. If you’ve turned updates off or prevented Windows from automatically installing them, the app will fail to appear. Go to Control Panel>System and security>Windows Update and check to see if updates are enabled or not. If already enabled, click ‘View Update History’ and see if KB3035583 is listed or not. If not, force Windows to check for updates again and allow it install any new ones that are available.

Pending System Restart

If the update is duly listed like in the screenshot above, but you still cannot see the app icon in the system tray, try restarting your system. Some updates require a system restart and if you’ve put it off too long, it may be why the app isn’t showing up.

Check If GWX.exe Is Running

Open Task Manager and in the Processes tab, look for a process called GWX.exe which should be running. If it isn’t, go to C:\Windows\System32\GWX and run the GWX.exe file.

One of these three steps should get the app to appear in the system try. Make sure you use it to check if your PC is fully compatibleor not first before you reserve your copy.

I am using my lap top for the time being and I planned to buy a new and nice computer in July because I thought it was better to buy one as opposed to upgrading but now I’m wondering. Should I buy Windows 8 now and upgrade it or should I wait? You know I trust your opinion. My Mother board blew up on my desk top.

I had turned off optional updates at your suggestion and now have 62 of them listed, including KB3035583.

Am I to install ALL of those or only KB3035583?

My computer says installation failed. I re-ran updates, still the same-what now?

Windows 7 has well- known issues with Windows Updates. Microsoft’s ultimate answer for fixing upgrade problems is to reinstall Windows. I don’t think you want to do that. And you don’t need to reserve a copy of Windows 10 anyway. You’ll be able to download it on or after July 29, 2015.

I have KB3035583 showing I have installed it, but I don’t find GWX in Windows\System32 to get the Windows 10 App started. This is on my 8.1 computer.

As long as you have the upgrade icon, don’t worry about it.

    | have followed your site now for many years and want to thank you for all the information we have been able to use.
My hubby and I are just intermediate tech savy, well basically he has very limited savy… So I need to ask a question about the windows 10 app or icon.
I have a fairly new HP PC with windows 7 Home Premium, my hubby has a refurbished windows 7 professional.
Both pc`s have the noted update KB3035583, however neither of us have the app installed on our system tray.
When i checked mine for the GWX , I find it, however there is no .exe. when i check his there is a .exe, but no response. I send it to system tray and the app shows but still no response.
who, what, where, when and why? Should there be a response? What have we done wrong here?
Can you help us with this problem? I will use your assistance from now on in all our pc problems because I know you are very conscientious about your work.

    Thank you…. Nancy

KB3035583 is listed under “recommended” updates and it was recommended by Cloudeight to TURN OFF recommended updates or if they appear to uncheck them. What do I do? It looks like Nancy is wondering too. Do I just install that one or all the recommended ones?
