Many of you live in areas where high-speed Internet isn’t available. And until now, satellite Internet has had serious drawbacks.
Beginning January 16, 2012, those of you who live in areas where high-speed Internet isn’t available, or those whose high-speed Internet service is very expense, there will be a new, relatively inexpensive high-speed Internet service available to you (United States only).
ViaSat announced yesterday (January 9, 2011) its new high-speed satellite service called “excede”.
Here’s the press release from ViaSat:
Unprecedented satellite broadband speed and user experience to begin rollout in U.S. January 16
Carlsbad, Calif. – January 10, 2012 – For millions of consumers with a need for high speed internet, the broadband choices just got a lot better. ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) will launch exede by ViaSat high-speed Internet service on January 16, offering speeds up to 12 Mbps (megabits per second) downstream and up to 3 Mbps upstream beginning at $50 per month.
Although satellite Internet has been available for years, ViaSat has completely transformed satellite broadband technology and now delivers a broadband experience similar to some of the fastest terrestrial broadband services for most applications. “With our new exede broadband service, customers across the United States will have a way to get exceptional speed whether they live in a city, suburbs or a more rural area,” said Tom Moore, senior VP of ViaSat. “Our new exede service speeds make us very competitive with both wireless home broadband service as well as legacy DSL…
Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention! I hope you’ll be able to do a follow-up within the next few months to help your “stone-age” readers out in the boonies (like me) know whether the reality lives up to the promise.
Just had my WildBlue technician tell me today that they were launching a very similar satellite in the very near future. He said I would be getting a letter telling me about the upgrade. Right now I have a 12 GB 30 day rolling limit but the tech seemed to think that would be eliminated. I consistently get 1 Mb download speed now but that will also be upgraded. Can’t get cable or DSL here in the boonies because we are too sparsely populated to be financially profitable for the companies to run the necessary wiring. So while I pay right at $70.00 month, I thankful to have WildBlue.
Thanks for the heads up on this. I have watched high speed go up all around me but I only have satellite available and it is so expensive. Will this be limited download or do you know?
Will be watching for updates.
