Chrome Crashes After Windows 10 Update? Here’s the Fix
From what we’ve read and the emails we’ve received, it looks like updating from Windows 10 version 2004 and Windows 10 version 20H2 is going smoothly for most users.
There is one complaint we’ve seen multiple times. After updating to Windows 10 version 21H1 (May 2021 Update) some users are reporting that Google Chrome crashes or won’t work at all after the update. On May 21, 2021, Google, on its Chrome page, acknowledged the problem with Chrome after updating Windows 10 to version 21H1 (May 2021 Update). Google has released an update and instructions to help users resolve the problems with Chrome.
If you’ve updated your Windows 10 PC to Windows 10 version 21H1, here’s the part of the relevant Google Chrome blog post which will be of interest to you.
“On May 21, we began to receive reports that Chrome would crash unexpectedly for some Windows, Linux and Chrome OS users. After conducting an investigation, we’ve identified the root cause and have released an update which resolves the behavior. In order to receive the update to Chrome, please follow the steps below:
For impacted Windows devices follow these steps:
1. Quit any open Chrome windows.
2. Re-open Chrome. You will still see the broken behavior.
3. Keep Chrome open for about 5 minutes.
4. After 5 minutes quit Chrome and then relaunch Chrome. The behavior should be resolved…”
That’s it, folks. The official word from Google. So, if you update your Windows 10 computer to Windows 10 version 21H1 (May 2021 Update) and Google Chrome crashes, you know what to do.
What is “Chrome”? a browser? I use Firfox (standard, with no known extensions). It suits my needs.
“Chrome” has too many meanings to me. I just purchased a nice Chromebook (and still learning how to use it).
Since 1960 I’ve made big computers do what I wanted them to do. Back then. Not today! Am I a luddite now?
Chrome is an Operating system. Google Chrome is a browser that runs on Android, Apple, Windows, Chrome, and Linux operating systems. Our site is dedicated to Windows users although we do feature some smartphone tips. When we say Google Chrome, we’re talking about Google’s browser. Firefox is officially called Mozilla Firefox and it runs on several different operating systems.
How do I find what version of Chrome I’m using?
Click on the 3 vertical dots in the top-right corner of Chrome. Select “Help” > “About Google Chrome” from the drop-down menu. It will tell you the version you’re using.
Chrome is Google’s browser. It is *the* browser on your chromebook but Windows is probably not installed there.
Many thanks for that info, Cloudeight! Best to be forewarned.
Recently had a user have this issue. The leave Chrome open for 5 minutes did not seem to fix it. Tried uninstall/reinstall, sfc scan, and still no luck. Going to try some regedit next.
You need to completely uninstall Chrome including the hidden folder “Google” and its subfolders located in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local Simply uninstalling Chrome really does nothing but reinstall the executable. Everything Google uses including whatever caused it to crash is in the aforementioned folders. Not only do you have to have to uninstall Chrome using a good uninstaller, you have to manually remove the hidden folders, and you must reboot the computer before you reinstall Chrome. I recommend you export the bookmarks before you do this.
