Disabling Balloon Tips in Windows 7

By | November 19, 2011

Microsoft has changed the way Windows 7 (and 8) display the balloon-tip pop-up notifications. Most people like the little balloon tips but some – including one irate reader who hates them. If you’re one of those who really don’t like balloon-tip pop-up notifications, we have made a registry tweak for you that will allow you disable them. And, don’t worry, if you decide you miss them and want them back again, we’ve made a little registry tweak that re-enables them.

Rather than asking you to muck around your Windows registry and changing things, we’ve done the changing for you. You can download our little premade registry tweak zip file, unzip and click on the tweak you want to apply. You’ll get a warning about merging data to the registry. If you want to go ahead and get rid of the balloon tips you’ll have to trust it and allow the merge. After you do that, you’ll need to reboot your computer before the changes will take effect.

If you decide you want the balloon tips back again, just click the “enable” registry tweak included in our free, handy dandy, (and small) zip file.

If you’re one of those who are irritated by Balloon Tips – download this zip file and follow the instructions above. Don’t forget, when you disable or re-enable balloon tips using our tweaks, you’ll have to reboot after apply the tweaks before you will see the changes.

If you want to be doubly safe, you can create a restore point before applying the tweak. We’re just saying…
