How to Find Wireless Networks Around You Without Installing Another Program

By | July 2, 2012

This tip is for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8

To find out what (if any) wireless networks are available wherever you are and lots of other interesting information such as signal strength, broadcast channel, and more about any detected wireless networks near you, just do this:

1. Press Windows Key + R

2. In the form next to “Open” type “command” (without the quotes) and press ENTER.

3. The command window will open

4. At the prompt enter the following command: “netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid” (without the quotes)

I get a message that Windows cannot find it. Is there some mistake?

You have to start the command prompt as Administrator,
otherwise it won’t work. A lot of functions in the command window require that you open the command window as “Administrator”.

For those who couldn’t get this to work… There’s a typo in instruction line #2. Instead of typing “command”, type “cmd” (without the quotes).
