How to Fix a Black Screen Error When Updating to Windows 10 Version 1903

Sometimes the best way to learn things is figuring them out for yourself.  Between us, we have 5 computers and a couple of phones and tablets. Four of the computers are running Windows 10 and 3 of them had been successfully updated to version 1903 with nary a problem. No problem that is until Darcy updated her oldest laptop this morning.  That’s when the problem occurred. And you know what they say: Every problem is an opportunity. And it really is.

One of the fastest ways we learn from the day of our birth is by solving problems. If we let other people solve all our problems, we don’t learn as much as we do by trying to solve them ourselves. But no one can know everything, not even Darcy (kidding!). So, we all have to rely on others who have the expertise to help us.

If you update to Windows 10 May 2019 Update (Version 1903) and you get a black screen after signing in, here are the first two things you need to do:

  1. Don’t panic
  2. Relax and take a deep breath

The black screen error seems to be one that is one of the more common ones with the Version 1903 update – most people won’t see it, but some people will. We saw it this morning and we worked out a fix and it works well. So, if you update your Windows 10 computer and you get the black screen error after you log in, here’s what do after not panicking and then taking a deep breath.

  1. Shut down your computer completely – power it off.
  2. Wait a few minutes.
  3. Power on your computer.
  4. If you see an X near the internet connection icon in the lower right-hand corner of the Lock screen, click it and turn your internet connection on.
  5. Sign in to your PC
  6. Your problem should be solved.

You can use this method if you get black screens with any Windows 10 update

Also, the black screen error can happen with other updates, including cumulative updates as well. And if they do, You use thes same method to fix black screen issues with them.

I have one laptop with a black screen problem every time there is any update.
The screen goes completely black, and won’t power on.
I have to unplug the power cable, take out the battery, replace the battery, plug in the power cable and only then can I power on.
Is there a better way than this?

Sounds to me like you have your power options > Additional power settings > “Change what the power buttons do” set to “When I press the power button” set to sleep instead of Shutdown. If this is the case then you can’t power your computer off with the power button (very easily). Make sure it’s set to “Shutdown”.

After this update my computer came up with a black screen with no icons (power or otherwise.) I could see my cursor. The fix which works for me it to hit ctl+Shift+esc to start task manager. Click on file, new task and in the input box type in explorer.exe.
There is a registry fix if the problem is persistent on reboot but for me it was unnecessary.

I have seen some of the registry “fixes” – I would not trust some of them. Restarting the Windows shell (explorer.exe) is a good solution; it is easy and it’s safe. Much safer than some registry fixes.

I did the update to 1903 yesterday during the night. All seems to be OK, but did not do much yet on the computer.
I did use the Ashapoo backup and have made the recovery disk way before that. My Passport box has all the photos that I need to keep and no more backups will be made. My question is – will I be able to take My Passport box to any other computer (away from the house) and view the photos? I also lost track of the few Computer Care Tickets and hope you can track them down. My right wrist is in a cast right now and will not do much typing for a while. My Emsisoft will update soon also. I cannon imagine what I would do without all your help and the daily information from the newsletters… Thanks a million..

I’m sorry Regina, but I don’t know what My Passport Box is. We can help with Windows problems, PC optimization, browser problems, malware infections, and the like, but we cannot help with programs we’ve never use or even heard of. I’m not sure why you’d need a program to view photos from anywhere- there are a lot of sites where you can upload photos and view them anywhere such as Google Photos. All you need to use Google Photos is a free Google account.
