According to StatCounter as reported in this The Verge article:
“…For the first week in history, Google Chrome is the most-used browser in the world, according to StatCounter. While Chrome has been leapfrogging the incumbent Internet Explorer on weekends for some time now, the week of May 14th–20th marks the first time Chrome has averaged a higher traffic share over a full seven-day stretch.
We’ve mentioned before that Chrome is the most popular browser visiting The Verge, but that’s far from the case in the rest of North America, where Internet Explorer still has the lead — 37 to 26 percent…”
Five years ago, Internet Explorer was used by over 70% of people in North America. And while it’s still used by 37% of the people in North America that’s a huge decline. Considering that Microsoft has control of Windows and that Internet Explorer comes pre-installed on every Windows computer sold in North America (but not in other regions of the world because of anti-trust suits) it’s shocking that so many people are going out of their way to install a different browser.
EB and I have differing opinions but one thing she doesn’t argue is that Chrome is far faster on Windows 7 than Internet Explorer.
I’m TC and I’m a big fan of Google Chrome because it just works. You don’t get silly warnings or unnecessary menu bars appearing telling you that your browser will run better if you disable your add-ins. Duh! Really? The other day I was working on a computer via our Cloudeight Direct Computer Car service and the lady had only Internet Explorer installed on Windows 7. I had to download a program for her computer so I used Internet Explorer to do it. I haven’t used Internet Explorer for anything but to check Web pages on our site for compatibility. Anyway, after plodding along with Windows Explorer and pushing past all its warning and advisories….I got fed up and asked the lady if I could install Chrome on her computer. I did so. A few minutes later I had the program I to use installed and I had converted her form a IE user to a Chrome user.
It’s your computer and you can use whatever browser you like – but you should at least install Chrome and use it from time to time. You’ll find it much faster (especially on Windows Vista and Windows 7) and more pleasant to use than IE.
I’m really sorry that IE has decided to become the Norton of Web Browsers. Luckily I’ve been using Chrome as my default browser since Chrome as released and I’ve never looked back. And before that I was a Firefox fan — but Firefox decided to grow up and try to be another Internet Explorer — plus it’s really resource intensive after it’s been running for while. Still, I think, Firefox is a better choice than IE.
You can get Google Chrome at http://google.com/chrome/ .
Give it a try and tell me how you like it. I think you’ll like it more than you think — especially once you get used to its minimalistic interface.
Wait until you download Windows 8 and become familiar with Internet Explorer v.10. It is superb and appears almost immediately on your screen, whether you use Metro UI or Desktop. I am also thrilled with the new operating system, and even more so, when I switched from Consumer Preview to Release Preview.
I have been using Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10. It still doesn’t render HTML 5 correctly, it has “do not track” as default, and it’s still Internet Explorer. Chrome is faster on Windows 8 than it is on Windows 7.
Internet Explorer 10 will only catapult IE back to #1 because on Windows RT you won’t be able to install Firefox or Chrome — as of now. However, we’ll see what happens when the anti-trust fanatics start bringing lawsuits.
Windows 8, however, gets it right because Microsoft finally decided that Mac and Android got it right — programs which are open but not in use, don’t use memory — they “sleep” — So Windows 8 is much snappier.
Unfortunately for those of us who like clean desktops — the Metro GUI makes a laptop look like a cellphone. Those huge bright primary tiles look like something out of a kindergarten class. Luckily, Windows 8 lets us all go back to a more aesthetic desktop — i.e. one without all those updating primary-colored tiles.
I tried Chrome and then did not care for it so I uninstalled it. Then I had problems, something was blocking some of things I was trying to do (I don’t remember specifically what it was now) and finally discovered that Chrome had left bits in the registry that were blocking me. Because of that, I would not want to try Chrome again.
Chrome is just a browser — it can’t block anything. I strongly suggest you scan your computer for malware using Malwarebytes.
on your recommendation, I installed Chrome, quite a while ago, and have been so pleased with it!
It is fast and efficient, too. If IE wants to compete, they are going to have to drop all thatextraneous stuf and just be a browser. thanks for all you good info. could never learned this much pc stuf without you.

I have been using Firefox for a long time but recently it takes ages to open bookmarks if they open at all. I do use Chrome as well but it is not as user friendly as Firefox and I never use Internet Explorer. I have downloaded the latest version of Firefox but it is still the same. When the website from the bookmark is in the address bar, sometimes if I click on the address bar the website will open but not always. Can you help?
