Emsisoft Anti-Malware just got even better
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8

New! Enhanced PUPS Detection included with new Emsisoft version 8.1! Free upgrade for all current paid users.

All Emsisoft users should have gotten or will be getting the newest version of Emsisoft via the normal Emsisoft update process. If you haven’t yet, you’ll be getting it soon. One of its new features is something we’ve been asking for and some of you have been asking for too – enhanced PUPs detection and blocking. The feature is not enabled by default, so you’ll need to turn it on. Here’s how you can do that:

We strongly recommend you turn on the new PUPs detection in Emsisoft Anti-Malware 8.1. Here’s how to do that.

Open Emsisoft
Click Guard (on the left panel)
Now, in the Guard dialog click the Fire Guard tab
Near the bottom of the File Guard dialog, under Alerts, choose either “Block and quarantine with alerts” or “Block and quarantine silently”, then close the Emsisoft dialog.

Here is a screenshot to help you:

We recommend you set PUPs detection to Quarantine with notification. You can also choose Quarantine silently if you prefer not to be notified if a PUP is blocked.

And here’s the announcement we received from Emsisoft about the new version (8.1) of Emsisoft

“Innovations to Emsisoft Anti-Malware 8.1

To date, we have refrained from making a big deal of small version changes, as the ongoing improvement of our products simply goes hand in hand with our basic quality standards.

The innovations to Emsisoft Anti-Malware 8.1, however, meet the growing demands of our users in three very important areas: improved real-time protection; the enhanced optional detection of so-called “Potentially Unwanted Programs” (PUPs); as well as a significant reduction of update traffic through the use of hybrid updates.

Details on this current release:

Real-time protection: Improvements to the File Guard and the Behavior Blocker routines reduce resource usage dramatically. Use of intelligent caching mechanisms and improvements to file access not only mean significantly less hard-drive access, but also result in a more than 90% reduction in the amount of data to be read. This makes Emsisoft Anti-Malware 8.1 faster than ever.

Hybrid updates: 95% less update traffic on average via a combination of incremental and differential updates.

PUPs detection: Both the real-time protection and scanner have been enhanced in order to better handle Potentially Unwanted Programs. This enables users to either prevent technically non-malicious, but Potentially Unwanted Programs from being installed or to remove existing installations of this type of software. You can enable this feature (it’s disabled by default) either during installation, or in the File Guard settings if Anti-Malware has already been installed.

Malware removal: Improved speed and precision when cleaning infections.

Screen reader compatibility: Enhanced support for screen readers and Braille lines for the visually impaired.

If you already own a valid Emsisoft Anti-Malware or Emsisoft Internet Security Pack license, you will receive the new version at no cost with your next online update in keeping with Emsisoft’s technology guarantee. “

And before we go, we want to remind you that PUP means “Potentially Unwanted Software” – which you can interpret as malware. This is the category that browser wreckers like Ask Toolbar, Conduit, Smilebox, and a raft of other browser add-ons and extension fit into. A rose by any other name is still a rose – and malware by any other name, like PUPs or PUP, is still malware. We live in a litigious world, you know.

That’s it. Emsisoft just got even better. Now you’ll be proactively protected from PUPs too!
