Make Cortana use Google Instead of Bing search (and how to set a default browser in Windows 10)

[Page updated on 6/28/2018]

We’ve removed this tip because it does not work in Windows 10 versions released after April 2016. Hopefully you’re not still using an unsupported version of Windows 10.

If you would like your Cortana searches to open in Chrome (or Firefox) instead of Microsoft Edge, please follow the instructions on this page.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. And you did it in plain English. With screen shots. Again, thank you

The post is over 3 years old – we have about 4000 posts and it’s impossible for us to go back though them all and update them, unless someone brings an outdated post to our attention. So thanks for that. I have now updated the post and noted it does not work after April 2016. I also included a way that will open searches in your default browser that does work on Windows 10 1703, 1709, and 1803. It will avoid opening Microsoft Edge and force Cortana to open the search results in Chrome or Firefox but Bing is the search engine. If you’re interested, re-read the updated post here.
