Other Ways to Restart or Shutdown Windows 10

If you’re unable to access your start menu to shut down or restart your Windows 10 computer – or you are just interested in learning other ways of shutting down or restarting your Windows 10 PC, this is for you.

1. You can hold down the Windows Key while pressing the R key to open the run dialog. In the run dialog you can type the following:

To shutdown your computer:  Press & hold down the Windows key and tap the R key. Now type Shutdown /s in the run dialog and press Enter – note the space between the word Shutdown and the slash.

The command above will shutdown your computer.

To restart your computer: Press & hold down the Windows key and tap the R key.  Type Shutdown /r in the run dialog and press Enter – note the space between the word Shutdown and the slash.

The command above will shutdown,  then restart your computer

You can also shutdown Windows 10 from the desktop. When you’re on the Windows 10 desktop, press ALT + F4 and you’ll see this:

You have a lot of options: Shut down (if you have Windows updates pending it will say “Update and shut down” ), Switch user, Sign out, Sleep, Restart (or “Update and restart” if you have Windows updates pending).
