Say Farewell to Windows Media Center

Say Farewell to Windows Media Center

When Windows 8 was first introduced, ,Microsoft wanted you to pay for Windows Media Center, but that didn’t work out so well.  Microsoft later acquiesced to the outcry from Media Center fans and begrudgingly offered a Media Center add-on for Windows 8.

Now it looks like the official death of Windows Media Center  will come when Windows 10 is released. So if you’re in love with Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player you better stick with Windows 7, or Windows 8x (with the add-on). However we suspect that you, like us have already moved on to  bigger and better things.

In a recent article on ZDNet, a Microsoft executive told ZDNet that there will be no Windows Media Center update available for Windows 10. The current version of Windows 10 tech preview seems to confirm this…when I try to run Media Center  that I should… “Uninstall this app now because it isn’t compatible with Windows 10.”

If you’re a fan of Windows Media Center, you should be aware that Windows Media Center will not function on Windows 10

We’ve found other media players with more functionality and we are currently using VLC (Video Lan). We offer VLC player as an alternative to Windows Media Center/Windows Media Player, with the caveat that you’re careful where you download it from. The official VLC Media Player site is here.

If you’re thinking of taking Microsoft up on its free upgrade offer for Windows 10, and you think Windows Media Center is the peaches, you better start getting used to the VLC Media Player right now. You may find it is much better and plays a wider variety of media files.

Downloaded via the link you provided but noticed Emsisoft still blocked a mirror host of some sort.
Wondering what happens to those who don’t have Emsisoft.

There is no download link – there’s a link to VLC Player Home page, but not the downloads. I don’t get any Emsisoft errors. Make sure you’re not clicking an advertisement, oK?

It does not matter, it matters only that VLC player is clean. Emsisoft may be blocking an advertising network, it may be blocking a mirrored download site – the only thing that matters is the download for VLC is clean.

I had no problem downloading this. Only one link in this article. Nice uncluttered VLC home page. Clearly identified prominently placed “download” (for windows) button. Now all I have to do is practice, practice, practice.

I went to to VLC site via your link, but like others Emsisoft blocked the 64 bit download that I selected.

I found that although I was clicking the correct download link, there was a problem on the page that Emisoft was blocking, exactly as your screenshot showed. Instead, I went down the page to the bold heading of “Official Downloads of VLC media player”. The first link was for “Windows”. That link worked flawlessly and Emisoft had no problems with it. Perhaps someone else can try that instead?

I should add that by clicking on the link for Windows, it brought up this page: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html From there you can pick how it is downloaded. Even though I can unzip regular zip files and 7zip files I chose the exe installer package. And yes, if you are seeing the choice for a 64 bit download something is wrong. At no time does it ever give a choice between 32 bit or 64 bit. It is simply designed to work on all Windows systems from XP on up to Windows 8.

Wow. I have been having intermittent internet problems. Did I say intermittent? LOL It’s been really buggy and sometimes web pages do not load completely. Hence, I did not see the 64 bit choice further down. Oops. My abject apologies!!!!!!! 🙂

There is no reason to download a 64-bit version when the 32-bit version that downloads from the main download button works on 64bit Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10. We’re trying to keep it simple – there is no reason to complicate things, right?

We want everyone to know we have not checked this program…not because we don’t like or or don’t think it’s good, just because we haven’t had a change to yet.
