The Windows Run Command – You Don’t Need to Be a Geek

OK folks. This tip works in Windows 7, Windows 8x and windows 10.

When you open a Run command by pressing the Windows Key + R, you can open a program or a web page.

Use the Win+R keyboard shortcut to open the Run dialog box. Type the name of any program in the dialog and press Enter (some applications require you to type a file path too). Here’s some applications that don’t need you to type a file path to open:

Try it right now. Press & hold down the Windows Key and press the R key. The Run dialog will open. Now type any of the following commands in the command line and press Enter.

Notepad
MSINFO32
WordPad
iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer)
RSTRUI.exe (System Restore)
MSPaint (Microsoft Paint)
MSCONFIG (Configuration utility)
WinMail.exe (if Windows Mail is installed)
SERVICES.MSC (Windows Services)
WRITE (Opens WordPad)
Chrome
Firefox
Winver
Calc (opens the calculator)

You can also enter a URL directly into this field to open up any webpage in your default browser. Try http://thundercloud.net/start/  🙂

There are tons of other command too, but woe is me, I’m tired of trying to think of them!

Could you explain what a file path is and how to make one when a program comes up and says no file path associated with this program? I don’t understand it at all.
    Thank you
